To get a thumbnail from a video link, first identify the host, resolve the link to the provider’s video ID or oEmbed endpoint, then read the thumbnail URL returned in the metadata. YouTube exposes several sizes through videos.list; Vimeo returns a current image URL and dimensions through oEmbed. For an unknown host, try oEmbed discovery and then the page’s Open Graph og:image value.
A link is not an image file by itself. The reliable approach is to ask the service that owns the video for its current metadata, handle missing sizes and privacy errors, and cache the result only as long as the provider allows.

Do not guess a filename or thumbnail size. Providers can omit images, change URL structures, restrict private videos, or remove deleted content.
Extract a YouTube thumbnail from a link
1. Resolve the video ID
YouTube links commonly appear as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID, or links with additional query parameters. Parse the URL and retain the v value (or the path segment after youtu.be/). Validate that the result is a plausible ID before making an API request; do not pass the entire page URL as id.

2. Request the snippet
Call YouTube’s videos endpoint with part=snippet, the ID, and an API key (or the authorization accepted by your project):

Some videos also expose fhd, qhd, or uhd. Every entry supplies a URL and, normally, width and height.
3. Select the largest size that actually exists
Never assume maxres is present. Sort the returned entries by width (or use a preference list and test for existence), then fall back to the next available image.

For an unlisted video, send the complete unlisted URL, including its privacy token. A shortened or public-looking URL can fail because the token is part of the authorization context.
Private and domain-restricted videos
Private or domain-restricted content may require the requesting domain or an authenticated Vimeo API request. If oEmbed returns an authorization error, use the credentials and access rules associated with the video rather than trying to construct a guessed image URL. Vimeo’s guidance on private-video oEmbed is available in its private-video documentation.
When you need to create or change a Vimeo thumbnail
Retrieving a thumbnail and creating one are different operations. In an authenticated workflow, Vimeo documents creating a picture with POST /videos/{video_id}/pictures and a JSON body containing time and active. Use that when a selected timecode should become the video’s thumbnail; use oEmbed when you only need the current image URL.

Handle an unknown video host
Try oEmbed before scraping markup
oEmbed is designed to return an embeddable representation of a URL without requiring you to parse the whole resource. Look for a provider endpoint or fetch the video page and inspect the head for a discovery link such as:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/json+oembed" href="https://provider.example/oembed?...">Request the discovered endpoint and check for thumbnail_url. Preserve the provider’s URL encoding and any required query parameters.
Fall back to Open Graph
If no native oEmbed implementation is available, fetch the page and parse:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://cdn.example/image.jpg">Use an HTML parser rather than a regular expression, resolve relative URLs against the page URL, and treat the value as optional. JavaScript-rendered pages may not include metadata in the initial response, while bot protection, login pages, or consent screens can return a different document from the one a visitor sees.

Provider-agnostic decision flow
- Recognize the hostname and normalize the URL without discarding privacy tokens.
- Use the host’s official API or oEmbed endpoint when one exists.
- If the page advertises oEmbed discovery, request that endpoint.
- Otherwise inspect Open Graph
og:image. - Validate that the returned URL is an image resource you are allowed to display or download.
- Store the provider, source URL, retrieval time, dimensions, and the image URL so you can refresh it when needed.

- Refresh volatile URLs: Vimeo warns that hard-coded thumbnail URL structures can stop working when its URL format changes. Retrieve current URLs through the API when freshness matters.
- Cache metadata, not assumptions: keep a short, configurable cache and retain the original provider URL so a refresh is possible.
- Respect limits: apply exponential backoff for transient failures, avoid repeated lookups for the same URL, and monitor YouTube quota or provider rate limits.
- Check rights and terms: displaying, downloading, proxying, or hotlinking a thumbnail can have copyright, branding, and contractual implications. Follow the provider’s terms and the publisher’s permissions.
- Protect secrets: keep YouTube keys and Vimeo credentials on the server, restrict them by API and domain where supported, and never expose them in client-side JavaScript.

- “Thumbnail missing”: inspect the returned fields instead of assuming a preferred size or key.
- HTTP 404: confirm the host, URL encoding, and video ID; deleted or private videos commonly produce this result.
- HTTP 401/403: check API credentials, privacy settings, allowed domains, and whether the full unlisted Vimeo URL was sent.
- HTML returned instead of JSON: you may have hit a login, consent, or bot-check page; inspect status, content type, and redirects.
- Image works briefly, then breaks: refresh the provider metadata rather than permanently storing a constructed CDN URL.
- Wrong picture: distinguish a provider thumbnail from an Open Graph page image or a screenshot; they are different assets.

Why does a YouTube URL sometimes have no max-resolution image?
YouTube only returns size keys that exist for that particular video. Select the largest entry present in snippet.thumbnails and fall back when maxres or newer keys are absent.
Does an Open Graph image guarantee a video thumbnail?
No. og:image is a page-level preview chosen by the publisher. It may be a poster, article image, logo, or nothing at all.
What should I do with an unlisted Vimeo URL?
Send the complete unlisted URL, including its privacy token, to Vimeo oEmbed; omitting the token can make an otherwise valid video appear unavailable.
