The quickest method is built into Windows: pause the YouTube video on the frame you want, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, drag around the video, and save the result from Snipping Tool. This captures exactly what is visible on your screen. If you need a player-only frame without browser controls, a YouTube screenshot extension is another option, but protected video can still produce a blank image.
Capture a YouTube frame with Windows Snipping Tool
This workflow needs no download or account. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other Windows browsers because Snipping Tool captures a region of the screen rather than relying on the browser’s video controls.
- Open the video and pause it. Move the YouTube playhead to the moment you want. Pausing before you select the region gives you a stable frame instead of a moving image.
- Start a regional capture. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Windows dims the screen and opens the Snipping Tool capture bar. Microsoft documents this shortcut in its Snipping Tool screenshot instructions.
- Choose the rectangular snip. Select the rectangular mode if it is not already selected, then drag from one corner of the video to the opposite corner. Keep the browser tab, address bar, YouTube title, and player controls outside the rectangle when you want only the picture.
- Review and save. Select the notification that appears after the capture. Snipping Tool opens the image for annotation, cropping, copying, and saving. Choose the save command, select a folder and file name, and confirm the image format offered by your Windows installation.
If the controls fade only after a few seconds, move the pointer away from the player, wait for the controls to disappear, pause, and then press the shortcut. You can also capture slightly inside the video edges and crop afterward so a thin black border or control overlay is easier to remove.
Use a keyboard shortcut for the whole screen
For a full-screen image, press Windows logo key + PrtScn. The Print Screen key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance also lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for some keyboards that do not have a dedicated Print Screen key.

A full-screen capture includes everything visible: browser chrome, notifications, other windows, and the YouTube controls. Use it when you need the surrounding context, then crop the saved image. For a clean video picture, Windows logo key + Shift + S is usually the more controlled choice.

How to screenshot YouTube without the controls
Hide the controls before using Snipping Tool
Pause the video, move the pointer away from the player, and wait until the playback bar and buttons disappear. Then press Windows logo key + Shift + S and select only the picture. If controls reappear when you move to select, make the selection quickly and crop the lower edge in Snipping Tool’s editor.
Use a player screenshot button
The Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot YouTube describes a button added to the YouTube player. The listing says it can save the current frame as a file, copy it to the clipboard, or do both. When researched, the listing showed version 3.0.0 and an update date of December 26, 2024; extension versions and availability can change.

Install only from the browser’s official extension store, review the permissions shown during installation, open the video, pause at the desired moment, and use the added button. Treat this as a convenience option rather than a guaranteed replacement for Windows capture.
Why a YouTube screenshot can be black or blank
A blank result does not have one universal cause established by the available documentation. First, retry with Windows logo key + Shift + S and select the visible player. That distinguishes a missed selection from a browser or player capture limitation.

The Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot for Youtube & Other Video Services specifically warns that some protected video may be returned as a blank frame to browser capture. Neither a Windows shortcut nor an extension should be presented as a way to bypass protection.
- Only the extension is blank: try the built-in Snipping Tool capture of the visible screen. If that works, the issue is limited to the extension’s player-capture path.
- The Snipping Tool selection is wrong: press Escape, pause the video again, restart the shortcut, and drag a rectangle that begins inside the video.
- The picture is black in every method: check whether the video itself is displaying correctly, reload the page, and retry once. If the content remains protected from browser capture, use an authorized viewing method rather than attempting to circumvent it.
- The capture includes controls: wait for the controls to fade, select a tighter rectangle, or crop the saved image.
Improve the result after capturing
- Pause before selecting: a paused frame prevents motion between the moment you position the snip and the moment you release the mouse.
- Capture a little extra: include a narrow margin around the player if exact edges are difficult to select, then crop in Snipping Tool.
- Keep the original: save the first capture before annotating or resizing it. Make a copy for arrows, highlights, or text.
- Check the destination: use a descriptive file name such as video-topic-03m42s so the timestamp is easy to identify later.
Snipping Tool’s editor can mark up and save the image after capture. The exact file-type choices and save location can vary with your Windows version and settings.

YouTube downloads are not a general screenshot workaround
YouTube’s official help distinguishes between downloading videos that you uploaded through YouTube Studio and downloading for offline viewing with YouTube Premium where that feature is available. See YouTube’s upload-download help and its Premium offline-viewing guidance. Those functions do not establish a general method for downloading another creator’s video so you can extract frames. For an ordinary viewer screenshot, capture the frame displayed in the browser and respect the creator’s rights and any access restrictions.
