Windows does not provide a universal “default screenshot app” switch. Its documented control changes what the Print Screen (PrtSc) key does: open the Snipping Tool screen-snipping overlay, or stop doing so. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, turn Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping off, then test the exact shortcut you use.
This setting does not redirect every screenshot shortcut to an arbitrary third-party application. Windows + Shift + S, Windows + Shift + R, Windows + PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn each have their own documented behavior.
What “default screenshot tool” means in Windows
Windows separates file and link associations from keyboard-capture behavior. The Default apps page lets you choose applications for file types and link types; it does not document a system-wide screenshot-app selector. The Print Screen choice is in Accessibility keyboard settings instead.
Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and placement can vary by release. If your Settings screen differs, search Settings for Print Screen or confirm the Windows version before applying the steps below.

Stop Print Screen from opening Snipping Tool
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Accessibility.
- Open Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Set the switch to Off.
- Press PrtSc once to test. The key should no longer invoke the screen-snipping overlay.
Microsoft states this exact path as: “Select Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, and set Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping to Off.” Turning it off changes the Print Screen key’s documented behavior; it does not assign ownership of every capture shortcut to another app.
Choose the shortcut that matches the capture you need
| Shortcut | Result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot. You can edit, save or share the snip. | This shortcut remains a Snipping Tool command; the Print Screen switch does not replace it. |
| Windows + Shift + R | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for a video clip. | It is a recording shortcut, not a still-image replacement. |
| Windows + PrtScn | Captures the full screen and may save the image automatically in PicturesScreenshots. | Availability depends on the keyboard hardware and device. |
| PrtSc / Print Screen | Performs the Print Screen action controlled by the Accessibility toggle. | Windows does not document this toggle as a universal third-party-app redirect. |
| Alt + PrtScn | Copies the active window to the clipboard. | Paste into an image editor or document to save it. |
| Fn + Windows + Space | Alternative full-screen capture listed for some keyboards without a PrtScn key. | Keyboard firmware and device design determine whether it works. |
How to use the built-in Snipping Tool deliberately
Selected-area still image
Press Windows + Shift + S. Select rectangular, freeform, window or full-screen mode in the overlay, make the capture, then use the notification to edit, save or share it.
Full-screen file saved automatically
Press Windows + PrtScn on hardware that supports the shortcut. Check PicturesScreenshots. If nothing is saved, use Windows + Shift + S and save from the Snipping Tool editor instead.
Active-window clipboard capture
Activate the window and press Alt + PrtScn. Open Paint, Photos or another editor, press Ctrl + V, and save in the required format.

Can a third-party app become the Windows default?
Windows’ documented pages do not establish a universal method for making one third-party capture program own every screenshot shortcut. Individual applications may offer hotkey registration, startup options or a way to claim Print Screen, but the exact controls depend on that app, your Windows build and sometimes keyboard firmware.
Before changing an app’s hotkeys, identify the shortcut you want to replace. A utility that registers PrtSc may not replace Windows + Shift + S, Windows + Shift + R, Windows + PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn. Avoid assigning the same key combination to two programs; the application that registers it first, or the one running with the necessary permissions, may win.
Troubleshooting
The Print Screen switch is missing
- Confirm you are in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, not Default apps.
- Search Settings for Print Screen.
- Check whether your Windows release uses slightly different wording.
- On managed work PCs, an administrator policy may restrict settings.
PrtSc still opens the overlay
- Reopen the setting and verify it is Off.
- Sign out or restart if the change is not picked up immediately.
- Check keyboard software for a separate Print Screen remap.
- Test the physical key without an Fn layer, then with Fn if your keyboard requires it.
Windows + Shift + S still opens Snipping Tool
That is expected. The documented Print Screen switch controls the Print Screen key, not every screenshot shortcut. Use the shortcut’s own application settings only if you need to change that behavior, and verify the app supports the exact Windows build you run.

Windows + PrtScn does not create a file
- Your keyboard may not expose a working PrtScn key; try the device’s Fn combination.
- Check PicturesScreenshots and your OneDrive screenshot location if folder backup is enabled.
- Use Windows + Shift + S and save manually when automatic saving is unavailable.
The capture is black or incomplete
Protected video, elevated applications, remote-desktop sessions and hardware overlays can restrict capture. Try capturing a normal desktop window, run the approved capture utility with the required permissions, or use the application’s own export function. Windows’ shortcut documentation does not promise that every protected surface can be captured.
When an API is better than a local shortcut
Keyboard shortcuts are useful for a person at a Windows desktop. Automated documentation, monitoring, visual regression and batch work are different problems: they need a URL, repeatable options and a response your script can store. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It ranks first when you need an API because it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean shots and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots.
Or skip the browser setup
Call the API with one GET request. Replace YOUR_API_KEY and the example URL as needed. The service can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before the shot, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
For production jobs you can choose full-page capture with lazy images, a CSS-selector element, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed public-image links, asynchronous signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make one third-party app handle every Windows screenshot key?
Windows documentation does not confirm a universal third-party override. Check the chosen app’s hotkey support for your Windows build and configure each shortcut it actually claims.
What should I use for automated website screenshots?
Use a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo when you need URL-based, repeatable captures, cleanup of consent overlays and scriptable output rather than a local keyboard shortcut.
The Bottom Line
To stop Print Screen from opening Snipping Tool, turn off Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Choose another documented shortcut when you need a different capture type; Windows does not expose one universal default screenshot-app selector.
