The destination app fetches the page and builds the card from the page’s metadata, usually including an image, title and description. If you own the site, add Open Graph tags in the HTML <head>; if you do not, only the site owner can correct missing or inaccurate metadata.
What a thumbnail link preview contains
A link preview is a card rendered by the app where you share the URL. It normally combines three independent values:
- Thumbnail: an image identified by
og:image. - Title: the page name from
og:title. - Description: a short summary from
og:description.
The card is generated by the destination service, not by the person pasting the link. Open Graph defines the metadata format, but each app decides whether to fetch it, how to crop the image and whether to show a card at all. Therefore, the same URL can look different in Teams, a messaging app and a social network.
Share a link and check the preview
- Copy the complete, publicly reachable URL, including
https://. - Open the conversation, email composer or post editor where you want to share it.
- Paste the URL as its own text. Wait while the app fetches the page.
- Inspect the card’s thumbnail, title and description before sending or publishing.
- Send the message or post. If no card appears, send the URL as plain text or troubleshoot the page and destination service.
A preview fetcher must be able to reach the page without your browser’s login session. A URL that works only after signing in, or that is blocked by a firewall, may remain a bare link.

How a site owner enables previews with Open Graph
Open Graph places page metadata in the document head. The protocol lists four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url (Open Graph protocol). A description is optional in the protocol but strongly recommended for a useful card.

</head>Use page-specific, reachable values
- Set
og:urlto the canonical URL you want people to share, not a temporary tracking or session URL. - Use an absolute HTTPS image URL that represents the page and can be fetched without authentication.
- Write
og:image:altas an image description, not a marketing caption. The Open Graph protocol recommends specifying it wheneverog:imageis present. - Keep title and description accurate to the page. Changing tags does not change cards that a platform has already cached until that platform fetches the page again.
If your CMS has social-sharing fields, fill those fields for each page and verify the generated source contains the tags in <head>. If it does not, edit the page template or ask the CMS administrator.

Microsoft Teams requirements
Microsoft’s Teams website-preview guidance says a page needs either a thumbnail image or both a title and description, and recommends providing all three. A URL that requires authentication will not receive a Teams preview. Use a public, directly accessible page when testing.
Platform differences and the WhatsApp caveat
Open Graph is a metadata protocol, not a guarantee that every service will render the same card. Apps can apply their own image dimensions, text limits, safety checks, cache rules and access requirements. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current feature matrix for major platforms, so test in the exact app and account type your audience uses.

A third-party-hosted WhatsApp documentation page reports that Open Graph markup should be in the HTML head within the first 300 KB of the document (ChatArchitect’s WhatsApp link-preview documentation). Treat that as a WhatsApp-specific implementation note from secondary documentation, not a universal rule for all services.
When you are sharing somebody else’s site
You generally cannot add a thumbnail to another publisher’s page from the sharing composer. The card is based on HTML published by that site. Try pasting the URL again, confirm that the destination app can access it, and share the bare link if the card does not appear. For a wrong image, title or description, contact the site owner and provide the exact URL and the values that should be changed.

Diagnose a missing or wrong preview
No card appears
- Paste the URL alone and wait; some composers do not fetch a preview when text surrounds the link.
- Open the URL in a private browser window. If it requires a login, a crawler may not be able to read it.
- Check that the page returns normally over HTTPS and is not blocked by a firewall, robots policy or bot challenge.
- Confirm that the tags are present in the server-rendered HTML head, not only inserted after JavaScript runs.
The card shows the wrong image or text
- Inspect the page source for duplicate Open Graph tags. Remove conflicting values so the intended tags are unambiguous.
- Check that
og:urlmatches the URL being shared and that the image URL is still valid. - Use the destination service’s current cache-refresh or preview-debug process. There is no universal refresh command.
Teams shows only a bare URL
Verify that the page is public and that it has either a thumbnail or both og:title and og:description; Teams recommends all three. Authentication-protected pages do not receive a Teams preview.

Performance, reliability and privacy checks
- Use a stable canonical URL and avoid session-specific query strings when generating previews.
- Allow enough time for client-rendered content and lazy images, but do not rely on an arbitrary delay when a selector or network-idle wait is available.
- Cache a screenshot only when the page can safely be reused; set a TTL that matches how often the page changes.
- Do not put secrets in a public screenshot URL. Use custom headers or cookies only for pages you are authorized to access, and avoid capturing private data into a shareable asset.
- Compare desktop and mobile viewports when the thumbnail or page layout is responsive.

Usually no. The destination app selects the card from the page metadata and its own rules. A site owner must change the published Open Graph image.

Why does a private page have no preview in Teams?
