Choose the goal first, then select a platform, domain, galleries, supporting pages and calls to action that help the intended visitor decide what to do next.
1. Define the portfolio’s job before you build it
A portfolio for wedding clients should make packages, availability and inquiries obvious. An editorial portfolio should make projects, credits and a downloadable CV easy to find. A fine-art site may need series statements, exhibition history and print purchasing. A personal archive can put storytelling ahead of lead generation.
Choose one primary audience
- Prospective clients: organize by service or client type and show how to inquire.
- Editors, galleries or employers: lead with coherent projects, captions, credits, biography and CV.
- Print buyers: make editions, sizes, prices, shipping and checkout prominent.
- Personal publishing: prioritize essays, sequences and behind-the-scenes context.
Write the desired action
Use one primary call to action, such as “Request a quote,” “Book a session,” “View the series,” “Buy a print” or “Download CV.” Repeat it in the navigation, on relevant project pages and on the contact page without making every page look like an advertisement.
2. Pick a platform and domain
Hosted builders reduce maintenance and usually include responsive templates, hosting and security. Your choice should follow the features you actually need rather than a generic “best builder” ranking.
#1 Best Overall
| Platform | Best fit | Relevant capabilities | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace | Client work, services and print sales in one site | Photography templates, portfolio pages, galleries, custom domains with SSL, forms, scheduling, commerce, watermarking, alt text and SEO controls | Confirm current features and pricing for your plan before committing |
| Wix | Beginners who want visual drag-and-drop control | Image-first editing, focused galleries, essential pages, social connections, SEO settings, mobile optimization and pre-launch feedback tools | Test the mobile result carefully after customizing the design |
| Adobe Portfolio | Photographers already paying for Creative Cloud | Adobe says Portfolio is included with Creative Cloud plans; it supports unlimited galleries and custom pages and can synchronize projects with Behance | Check which Creative Cloud plan you have and whether you need commerce or booking tools |
| Shopify | A portfolio that must also sell prints or services | Store, checkout, mobile-focused themes, contact methods, image editing, updates and promotion features | It adds store configuration that a presentation-only portfolio may not require |
Use a custom domain
A short domain that matches your name or studio is easier to remember and share than a builder subdomain. Enable the builder’s SSL option, use one canonical version of the domain, and set a professional email address or a contact form. Platform plan inclusions and prices change, so verify them on the provider’s current plan page.
3. Curate the work before uploading anything
A portfolio is not an unfiltered backup of every shoot. Start with the images that best represent the assignments you want next. Remove duplicates, near-identical frames, technically weak files and work that attracts the wrong kind of inquiry.
Build a small set of coherent projects
Group images by genre, client type, location or series only when that grouping helps a visitor make a decision. A portrait photographer might use “Editorial,” “Commercial” and “Personal.” A documentary photographer might use named projects with a short statement. Avoid ten thin categories that each contain only a few unrelated images.
How many photos should you include?
There is no independently established universal ideal number, conversion rate or platform winner. Treat image counts as a design decision: show enough work to demonstrate consistency and range, but stop before repetition weakens the sequence. Review analytics and inquiry quality after launch, then adjust each gallery based on your own audience.
Recommended Free Tools
Sequence each gallery
- Open with an image that communicates the project immediately.
- Alternate wide, medium and detail views where that improves rhythm.
- Place the strongest closing image near the end rather than ending on an afterthought.
- Delete any frame whose only role is to increase the count.
4. Create the pages visitors expect
Home or landing page
State what you photograph, where you work and who you serve in the first screen. Show a concise selection or links to your main projects, then provide the primary call to action. A visitor should understand your specialty without opening a menu.
Portfolio or project pages
Give every project a useful title, a short description and the intentional image sequence. Add client, publication, location or year credits when appropriate. Captions and context should clarify the work, not compete with it.
About or bio
Explain your approach, relevant experience and location in plain language. A portrait can make a solo practice easier to trust. Add a CV, exhibition history, testimonials or memberships only when they support the site’s goal.
Services, pricing or booking
For client work, describe deliverables, coverage or process and link directly to an inquiry or scheduling step. If prices vary, explain what determines a quote instead of publishing a misleading starting figure.
Contact or inquiry
Provide a visible email address or a short form. Ask only for information needed to respond, such as name, email, project type, date, location and budget range. Confirm the success message and test notifications before launch.
Store or print page
If you sell, explain edition, paper, sizing, fulfillment and returns before checkout. Keep purchasing separate from the portfolio navigation if commerce would distract visitors who only need to evaluate your work.
5. Prepare images for speed, accessibility and protection
- Export appropriately sized files instead of uploading full camera originals.
- Compress images and compare quality at the largest display size.
- Use responsive image settings supplied by the builder where available.
- Check lazy-loaded images by scrolling through every long gallery before publishing.
- Write descriptive alt text that conveys the image’s subject and role; do not stuff keywords. Squarespace’s help guidance notes that alt text can help images appear in search results and improves accessibility for potential clients.
- Use captions or project descriptions when context changes how the work is understood.
- Consider modest watermarking for publicly displayed commercial work, while recognizing that watermarks can reduce visual clarity.
Open the draft on a current phone, tablet and desktop. Check pinch or tap behavior, fullscreen viewing, menu controls, image cropping, keyboard focus, contrast and form fields. Do not assume a desktop gallery will be usable on a small screen.
6. Build the site in a practical order
- Set global design: choose type, colors, spacing, logo treatment and a consistent image ratio.
- Create navigation: keep primary links limited to the pages visitors need to decide and contact you.
- Publish one complete project: use it to test gallery behavior, captions, loading and mobile layout before adding the rest.
- Add supporting pages: About, services, contact, CV, testimonials or store pages as required by your goal.
- Configure SEO basics: write a specific page title and description, use descriptive URLs, add alt text and connect the domain. These actions improve clarity but do not guarantee search rankings.
- Connect social profiles: link to active professional accounts and make sure visitors can return to your site.
- Preview privately: ask peers, mentors or past clients to complete a realistic task, such as finding a project and sending an inquiry.
7. Launch checks and ongoing maintenance
Before launch
- Every menu link, project link, social link and form notification works.
- The domain resolves with SSL and the preferred www or non-www version redirects consistently.
- Images load without unexpected cropping, layout shifts or broken thumbnails.
- Alt text, headings, captions and contrast are understandable with assistive technology and on small screens.
- Contact details, availability, credits, prices and copyright information are current.
- A privacy notice and cookie choices match the tools you actually use and the jurisdictions in which you operate.
After launch
Watch which galleries receive attention and which pages lead to qualified inquiries. Refresh stale work, remove projects that no longer represent your direction, add new series deliberately and promote updates through social channels, email or a blog. Keep an offline, high-resolution archive; your website is a presentation layer, not your only backup.

Pages feel slow
Resize and recompress the largest files, remove unnecessary animation, reduce the number of images initially loaded and verify that the builder’s responsive or lazy-loading settings are enabled. Test on a mobile connection rather than only on fast office Wi-Fi.
Images look soft or cropped
Check the source export, the display dimensions and the template’s crop mode. Provide a focal point when the builder supports it, and use a gallery layout that preserves the intended aspect ratio.
Visitors cannot find the inquiry form
Put the main action in the header, on the home page and at the end of relevant project pages. Remove competing calls to action and test the complete submission and notification path.
The form submits but no reply arrives
Check the destination address, spam filtering and the builder’s notification log. Add a confirmation message that gives the visitor an alternate email address if delivery fails.

If you need screenshots of your finished portfolio for documentation, QA or social previews, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
See the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This example captures Stripe as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. It supports full-page and element captures, device and retina settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, PDFs, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture and a usage API. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put every genre I shoot on one site?
Only if the combination supports the audience and does not dilute the work you want to be hired for. Separate focused projects are usually clearer than one undifferentiated archive.
Best Value
Do I need a blog?
No. Add one when publishing process notes, essays or project updates helps your audience understand and return to the work.
Can social media replace a portfolio website?
Social profiles can distribute new work, but a site gives you control over structure, domain, project context, contact details and long-term presentation.
Is a store required for selling prints?
No, but a store platform or commerce integration is useful when you need product variants, payments, fulfillment and order management rather than inquiries alone.

How often should I update a photography portfolio?
Review it whenever your target work changes, then make smaller checks at least each quarter for stale links, outdated availability, broken forms and projects that no longer represent you.
What should I do if I photograph people or private spaces?
Confirm you have the necessary permissions and avoid publishing identifying details, sensitive locations or client information that the agreement does not allow.
