Test the platform’s built-in capture method on an ordinary screen, then verify where that image is sent. If built-in capture works everywhere except one app, that app may deliberately block capture; if a third-party recorder fails, check its own permission and shortcut settings.
The exact controls vary by Windows 10/11, macOS release, iOS version, Android release, and phone manufacturer. Use the branch below that matches your device and whether you need a still image or a recording.
Start with a known-good still screenshot
A failed hotkey is not proof that the screenshot system is broken. Use the documented system method without a third-party utility, and capture a normal home screen or browser page.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool overlay should appear.
- Select a capture mode and drag over the area you need.
- The result is copied into Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it. Open the notification or Snipping Tool window to choose the file name and location.
- For a full-screen snapshot, use the documented Print Screen path on your keyboard or in Windows settings.
Microsoft’s instructions are at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots. If the overlay opens but no file appears, continue to the output-location checks rather than reinstalling immediately.

Mac
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot panel. Use its capture controls and inspect Options > Save to before taking the shot.
- Press Shift-Command-3 for the full screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4 to select a region; press Space after the crosshair appears to select a window.
- Hold Control with a shortcut only when you want the capture copied for pasting. Paste into an image-capable app to verify clipboard output.
Apple documents these controls, the save destination, and shortcut customization in Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac. You can change shortcuts in Keyboard settings if another application has taken the same key combination.
iPhone
The button combination depends on the model:
- Face ID models: press the Side button and Volume Up together, then release.
- Touch ID models with a Home button: press the Side button and Home together.
- Older models with a Top button: press the Top button and Home together.
Find the image in Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Apple describes a different preview and quick-tools flow in iOS 26 than in iOS 18 and earlier, so follow the instructions for the iOS version actually installed. See Apple’s iPhone screenshot guide (published June 3, 2026).
Android phones and tablets
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time.
- If that does not work, hold the Power button and choose Screenshot from the power menu.
- On Android 12 and later, use the scrolling-screenshot option when it appears. It is available on most scrollable screens that allow it.
Google directs users to Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Devices without Photos commonly use Gallery > Screenshots. Button layouts and menus differ by manufacturer; if both documented methods fail, Google says to use the phone maker’s support site. Its current instructions are in Android Help.
Why the screenshot “disappeared”
Many failures are really destination problems. Compare the capture method with its documented output before changing permissions or storage.

If you used a method that copies rather than saves, paste immediately into an image editor. A successful paste separates a capture-path problem from a storage or library problem.
Still screenshots and screen recordings are different problems
A still-image shortcut and a screen recorder can use different controls and permissions. A screenshot that works does not prove that recording will work, and a recording permission prompt does not explain a native screenshot shortcut that does nothing.
- For a Mac still image, test Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4, or the Shift-Command-5 panel.
- For a Mac recording or a third-party sharing app, inspect the app’s requested screen and system-audio recording permissions.
- On iPhone, use Apple’s recording controls and expect that some apps prohibit recording even though ordinary screenshots work.
Do not apply a screen-recording permission fix to every screenshot failure. Match the setting to the task and the application that requested it.

When one app or window is the only failure
If the built-in method captures your desktop, browser, and settings screens but produces a black image or no window in one application, the application or window may restrict capture.

Protected Mac windows
Apple notes that some apps do not allow window pictures; its guide gives DVD Player as an example. Test another ordinary window to confirm the restriction before changing system settings. There is no supported troubleshooting step that turns protected content into an unrestricted capture.
Protected iPhone apps
Apple says some iPhone apps do not allow screen recording. A blocked recording does not indicate that your buttons are defective; check whether screenshots of other apps still work.
Android secure windows
Android windows can declare the FLAG_SECURE protection. Google’s Accessibility Scanner documentation says such a window cannot be captured by the scanner and may appear black. Treat a black result in one protected screen as an app policy, not as a reason to bypass the protection.
Compare scope before troubleshooting:
- Every screen fails: continue with platform, shortcut, and output checks.
- One window fails: look for that app’s capture restriction.
- Only a recording fails: investigate recorder permissions and the recording workflow.
Permissions for third-party capture and sharing
Native shortcuts generally do not require the same approval as a third-party recorder. When a recorder or meeting application asks for screen access, follow that product’s instructions.
For example, Google Meet’s Chrome guidance for macOS says to allow Chrome when prompted. If the first prompt was missed, its directions point to Mac privacy settings so Chrome can be added. Those steps apply to Google Meet’s documented workflow and macOS Sequoia-era behavior; they are not a universal repair for native screenshot shortcuts. See Google Meet’s recording troubleshooting.
A diagnostic decision path
- Identify the environment. Record the device model, operating-system version, and whether you need a still image or a recording.
- Run the built-in test. Capture an ordinary screen using the platform method above, not a third-party hotkey.
- Locate the output. Check the documented library, save folder, preview, or clipboard for that method.
- Change scope. Try a different app and a full-screen capture. Note whether failure is global, window-specific, or content-specific.
- Check relevant permissions. Only inspect screen-capture permissions when a third-party recorder or sharing app requests them.
- Use the maker’s guidance. If Android’s two documented methods fail, Google explicitly defers to the phone manufacturer. For a third-party utility, use that utility’s support and shortcut settings.
This sequence avoids treating an unsupported shortcut, a wrong folder, a protected window, and a missing recorder permission as the same fault.
