Yes. Ubuntu’s standard GNOME desktop includes a built-in screenshot tool that performs the usual “snipping tool” jobs: selecting a region, capturing the entire screen, or capturing a window. Press Print (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) to open it; you do not need to install a separate application. Ubuntu’s current instructions are documented in Screenshots and screencasts. The exact overlay and shortcuts can differ if you use KDE Plasma, Xfce, or a customized installation.
How Ubuntu’s built-in snipping tool works
On the standard Ubuntu GNOME desktop, the Print key opens a capture interface. You then choose a region, a screen, or a window before taking the image. Ubuntu documents that the resulting file is saved in Pictures/Screenshots with a name beginning with “Screenshot” and containing the date and time. The image is also copied to the clipboard, allowing you to paste it directly into an email, document, chat, or image editor. See the official Ubuntu screenshot documentation for the current interface.
Capture a rectangular area
- Press Print.
- In the overlay, choose the area or selection mode. You can also press S while the screenshot interface is open.
- Drag around the part of the screen you need.
- Confirm with Enter, Space, or Ctrl+C, depending on the control shown by your desktop.
The area-selection workflow is the closest equivalent to Windows’ Snipping Tool: only the rectangle you select is captured.
Capture the focused window
Press Alt+Print for the currently focused window. This is useful when you want an application window without the desktop panel or another window behind it. You can also open the overlay with Print and press W to choose window capture.

Capture the whole screen
Press Shift+Print to capture the entire screen. From the overlay, C selects screen capture. If more than one display is connected, check which screen the interface highlights before confirming.
Control the pointer and mode
The screenshot interface includes keyboard controls documented by Ubuntu:
- P toggles whether the mouse pointer appears.
- V switches between screenshot and screencast modes.
- Enter, Space, or Ctrl+C confirms a capture.
These keys apply to the GNOME screenshot interface described by Ubuntu; another desktop environment may expose different controls.
Where screenshots are saved and how to use the clipboard copy
Find the saved image
Open Files, select Home, and open Pictures followed by Screenshots. Look for the newest file whose name starts with Screenshot. If that folder is not present, your desktop or release may use a customized save location; use the clipboard copy or search your Home folder for files beginning with “Screenshot.”

Paste without opening the file
Because Ubuntu copies the capture to the clipboard, open the destination program and press Ctrl+V. This is often faster than navigating to the saved file. Clipboard contents can be replaced by your next copy operation, so keep the saved image if you need it later.
Keyboard shortcuts at a glance
| Action | Shortcut | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Open screenshot interface | Shows choices for area, screen, or window | |
| Focused window | Alt+Print | The active window |
| Entire screen | Shift+Print | The full display |
| Start a short screencast | Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R | Screen video recording |
Ubuntu lists these predefined shortcuts in its keyboard-shortcut documentation. Laptop keyboards sometimes require holding Fn as well as Print, and compact keyboards may label the key differently.
Screenshot versus screencast
A screenshot is a still image. Ubuntu’s same interface can switch to screencast mode with V. You can choose a screen or a selection, and Ubuntu shows a recording indicator while recording. The documented shortcut Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R starts a short screencast. Use the screenshot controls for a single frame; use screencast mode when movement or a sequence of actions matters.
What to do when Print does not work
Check the keyboard mapping
Open Settings → Keyboard → View and Customize Shortcuts. Search for screenshot actions and inspect or assign the keys you want. Ubuntu explains this path in its keyboard-shortcut help. If your keyboard has a function layer, try Fn+Print and verify that another utility has not claimed the key.

- The keyboard for business and office working is the budget-friendly keyboard that is built for longer use
- Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
Confirm which desktop you are running
The workflow above describes Ubuntu’s standard GNOME desktop. Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (Xfce), remote sessions, and vendor-customized images can provide different overlays and default shortcuts. Look in that desktop’s keyboard settings for its screenshot command rather than assuming the GNOME labels are present.
Look for the file and clipboard result
- If a capture appears but you cannot find it, check
Pictures/Screenshotsand search for files beginning withScreenshot. - If the file is present but pasting fails, take another capture and paste immediately; clipboard managers or remote-desktop software can replace clipboard contents.
- If nothing happens, test the screenshot action from the desktop’s application menu or Settings shortcut editor. This distinguishes a broken key from a missing capture service.
Command-line captures with gnome-screenshot
For scripts, repeatable filenames, or a terminal-only session, Ubuntu also documents the gnome-screenshot utility. The cited Ubuntu manpage is for Ubuntu Jammy and lists package version 41.0-2; package names and behavior can differ on other releases.
Useful command patterns
gnome-screenshotcaptures the whole screen.gnome-screenshot -wcaptures the active window.gnome-screenshot -alets you select an area.gnome-screenshot -f /path/to/capture.pngwrites directly to the specified file.gnome-screenshot -csends the image to the clipboard instead of (or in addition to, depending on the installed version) a normal file workflow.gnome-screenshot -d 5waits five seconds before capture, useful for opening a menu or changing focus.- Pointer-inclusion options are available in the manpage when the pointer must appear in the result.
Read the Jammy gnome-screenshot manpage with man gnome-screenshot on your own system, because the installed release is authoritative. A command that works on Jammy should not be assumed to have identical options on every Ubuntu version.
When Flameshot is a better fit
Install an additional tool when you need annotation controls during capture, a persistent tray workflow, configurable appearance, or a command-line interface tailored to screenshots. Ubuntu’s Questing manpage documents Flameshot 12.1.0+ds-2 in that release context; availability and version should be checked for your Ubuntu release.

Typical Flameshot workflows
flameshot guiopens an interactive region selector with annotation tools.- Flameshot also documents full-screen and per-monitor modes, clipboard output, delays, and custom save paths.
- After selecting a region, add arrows, boxes, highlights, or text before saving or copying.
Consult the Ubuntu Flameshot manpage for the exact commands and options in Questing. Unlike the built-in interface, Flameshot must be installed separately and may need its own shortcut assignment.
Built-in tool, gnome-screenshot, or Flameshot?
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-off area, window, or full-screen image | Built-in screenshot interface | Already integrated; Print opens it and the result is saved and copied |
| Repeatable terminal or script capture | gnome-screenshot |
Supports area, window, delay, pointer, clipboard, and explicit file options |
| Draw annotations while selecting | Flameshot | Interactive region annotation and additional workflow controls |
| Different desktop or customized keyboard | That desktop’s shortcut settings | GNOME labels and defaults are not universal |
Start with the built-in tool unless you have a specific requirement. Installing another utility adds package maintenance and shortcut configuration without improving a basic capture.

If what you need is a screenshot of a website rather than the Ubuntu desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a replacement for a local Print-key capture; it is useful for automated URL captures, documentation builds, tests, and AI-agent workflows.
The service’s clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result.

Practical reliability and privacy checks
- For sensitive desktop material, prefer the local Ubuntu tool so the pixels remain on your machine unless you intentionally share them.
- Before distributing a capture, inspect for passwords, tokens, private browser tabs, notifications, and personal data.
- Use a delay or a window-specific capture when menus or transient UI must be visible; verify the saved image rather than relying only on a success notification.
- For scripts, write to an explicit path and check the command’s exit status. For API jobs, set a sensible timeout, check HTTP errors, and retain the response headers that identify the page verdict and billing state.
