The two ways to capture a frame
DaVinci Resolve provides two different workflows. Choose the one that matches what you need:

A DaVinci Resolve control panel can also capture a still by pressing its GRAB STILL button, but the hardware is optional.
Before you capture: park the exact frame
- Open the project and load the timeline or clip containing the image you want.
- Move the playhead until the Viewer displays the precise frame. Use frame-by-frame stepping if necessary rather than stopping approximately at a scene change.
- Check the Viewer at the zoom level you need. The captured image represents the frame under the playhead, not a nearby frame.
If the result is one frame early or late, return to the timeline, move the playhead by one frame, and capture again.

Method 1: Grab Still in the Color page
Capture the reference still
- Click the Color page in the page bar.
- Confirm that the playhead is on the frame you want.
- Right-click inside the Viewer and select Grab Still.
The still appears as a thumbnail in the Color page’s Gallery. Resolve stores this as a reference still for color work, and the Gallery still retains its grading metadata.
You can use the menu equivalent View > Grab Still. On macOS, the documented default shortcut is Option-Command-G. Keyboard assignments can differ if you have customized Resolve.
Export the Gallery still as an image
- In the Gallery, right-click the still thumbnail.
- Choose Export.
- Select a destination folder and enter a filename.
- Choose the image format and confirm the export.
The Resolve manual lists DPX, CIN, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, BMP and XPM for still export. JPEG and PNG are usually the simplest choices when you need a shareable image or a file for documentation. Choose the format required by the next application when a production or archive workflow specifies one.
Method 2: export the current frame directly
For a one-off image, you do not need to create a Gallery reference still first.

- Open File > Export > Current Frame as Still.
- Choose the destination, filename and image format in the save dialog.
- Confirm the export, then open the resulting file to verify it.
This route is the quickest way to produce a standalone frame. A Blackmagic Design forum answer also notes that you can assign a keyboard shortcut to Current Frame as Still if you use the command frequently.

Which method should you use?
Use Grab Still when the frame is part of color work
- You want a reference thumbnail beside other shots in the Gallery.
- You are comparing shots or matching a grade.
- You want the Gallery still’s grading metadata retained with the reference.
Use Current Frame as Still for a quick deliverable
- You only need a JPEG, PNG or another image file.
- You do not need a Gallery reference.
- You want to avoid an extra import or Gallery-management step.
Use a control panel only for speed or tactile operation
The control-panel GRAB STILL button performs the same Gallery capture described above. Resolve does not require a Speed Editor or compatible control panel for frame capture.
Format choices and export checks

Resolve’s Viewer may show overlays or interface controls that are not part of the exported frame. If you need a clean image, verify the saved file rather than judging only from the on-screen Viewer.
Shortcuts, menus and version differences
The Color-page shortcut documented by Blackmagic Design is Option-Command-G on macOS. The same action is available through View > Grab Still or the Viewer’s context menu. The direct export command is File > Export > Current Frame as Still; you can assign a shortcut to it through Resolve’s keyboard-customization controls.
Blackmagic Design’s resource page currently lists the DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Manual, dated 08 September 2026. Menu labels and default shortcuts can change between Resolve releases and operating systems. If a command is missing, check Help or the manual that matches the version installed on your computer instead of assuming the command was removed.
Troubleshooting
Grab Still is not in the right-click menu
Make sure you are on the Color page and are right-clicking inside the Viewer, not the timeline or Gallery. You can also try View > Grab Still.

The captured image is the wrong frame
The playhead was not parked precisely. Return to the timeline, step one frame at a time, confirm the Viewer, and capture again. This is especially important at cuts and rapid motion.
The still appears in the Gallery but there is no file in my folder
Grab Still first creates a Gallery reference; it does not automatically create the external image file you may be expecting. Right-click the Gallery thumbnail and choose Export, then select the destination and format.

Use File > Export > Current Frame as Still. This is the direct-export workflow.
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm that you are using the shortcut for your operating system and that it has not been reassigned. Use the menu command to test the operation, then inspect Resolve’s keyboard customization if you want a different key combination.
A format I expected is not listed
The documented list is DPX, CIN, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, BMP and XPM. Select one of those formats or use an image-conversion step required by your downstream application. Do not rename a file extension and assume that changes its encoding.

The export command is absent in my version
Resolve’s menu names and shortcuts vary by release and operating system. Check the manual for your installed version, and verify that the playhead and a valid clip or timeline are active before looking for the command again.
A reliable workflow for several frames
- Create a short list of the timecodes or shot names you need.
- For each item, park the playhead exactly and capture with Grab Still if you need a Gallery reference.
- Give Gallery stills clear names so you can identify them later.
- When the selection is complete, export each thumbnail from the Gallery, choosing a consistent destination and format.
- Open a few exported files outside Resolve to verify framing, filenames and format before delivering them.
If you only need files and not color references, use Current Frame as Still for each frame instead. Keeping the two purposes separate avoids a Gallery filled with temporary captures.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Frame capture is a local Resolve operation; it does not require an online service or paid add-on.
- A control panel can reduce mouse movement, but it is an optional hardware convenience rather than a requirement.
- Capturing the exact frame is more important than capturing quickly. At an edit point, verify the frame after stepping across the cut.
- Export time and file size depend on the frame dimensions and selected encoding. JPEG and PNG are sensible starting points, while DPX, CIN or TIFF may be required by a specific finishing workflow.
- For repeatable work, standardize the filename pattern, destination and format before starting the batch.
