A “meta image” usually means the Open Graph image: the picture a webpage declares with og:image so compatible social networks and messaging apps can use it in a shared-link preview. You host the image at a public URL and reference that URL in the page’s HTML metadata; the receiving service then decides whether and how to display it.
What a meta image is
“Meta image” is informal terminology, not the name of a formal Open Graph property. In web publishing, it almost always refers to an Open Graph (OG) image. The Open Graph Protocol defines og:image as “An image URL which should represent your object within the graph.” The protocol’s broader goal is to let a webpage become a rich object in a social graph.
When someone pastes your URL into a compatible service, that service can fetch the page, read its metadata, and build a card containing an image, title and description. Apple documents this use for Messages: Open Graph metadata can supply images and meaningful captions in link previews. The page author supplies the metadata; each service controls whether it supports the tags, when it fetches them and what it ultimately displays.
How an OG image is declared
Add the metadata in the document’s <head>. The value of content is an image URL, not an uploaded file embedded in the tag.

The 1200 by 630 values above are illustrative markup, not a universal platform requirement. The reviewed documentation does not establish one size that every service requires, so check the destination service’s current guidance when designing artwork.

More than one image
You may provide several og:image values. In a conflict, the protocol says the first image is preferred. Put each image’s structured properties immediately after the root og:image property they describe:

- The sender pastes a URL into a service that supports rich previews.
- The service fetches the linked page or otherwise parses its metadata.
- It reads available values such as
og:title,og:descriptionandog:image. - The service chooses what to show, crops or resizes the image for its card, and may store the result until it refreshes its preview data.
This process is not a command to every platform. A valid tag does not force every app, crawler or search result to show the same picture. Google Search Central says image-preview selection in Search is automated, so an OG image is not a guarantee of a particular Google thumbnail.

Apple’s Messages implementation has a documented constraint: its link previews do not follow meta redirects and do not run JavaScript. For Messages, the title and image metadata therefore need to be present directly in the HTML response for the linked page. Do not automatically generalize that exact behavior to every crawler, but it is a strong reason to render OG tags server-side or in the initial HTML rather than injecting them only after page load.
Creating a reliable meta-image workflow
1. Design the image for a preview card
Put the page’s subject, brand or product in the visual itself, and keep important text away from edges where a service may crop it. Choose a format your hosting stack serves correctly and make the file available without an interactive login. Because no single cross-platform size rule is established here, treat the dimensions as a design decision and verify the result in the services your audience uses.

2. Host the file at a stable URL
Use HTTPS and a URL that returns the image itself with a correct content type. Avoid expiring query-string URLs unless you know the receiving crawler can fetch them before expiry. Check that your robots, authentication and firewall settings do not block legitimate preview fetches.

3. Add the tags to the initial HTML
Place the tags in the document head on every page that needs a distinct preview. Set og:url to that page’s canonical URL and write an og:alt description that conveys what the image shows. A client-side script that adds the tags after navigation may be too late for services that inspect only the initial response.
4. Verify the response, not just your browser
View the raw HTML or use a crawler-like request to confirm that the metadata appears without executing application JavaScript. Then capture the rendered page at representative viewport sizes to catch layout, cookie banners or overlays that could obscure the content you are using as a visual reference. A screenshot cannot prove that a social crawler will accept your OG tags; it verifies what a browser receives and displays.

- It is not the same as an HTML
<img>inside the article body; it is a metadata reference intended for link previews. - It is not an uploaded image stored inside the
<meta>element; the element contains a URL. - It is not a guarantee that every social app or search engine will display that exact image.
- It is not a substitute for accessible, meaningful images in the page content itself.
Practical checklist
- Use one absolute HTTPS URL that returns the intended image.
- Declare
og:title,og:type,og:urlandog:imagein the initial HTML. - Add
og:image:alt; add type, width, height and secure URL when useful. - If several images are declared, place the preferred one first.
- Inspect the raw response and the rendered page separately.
- Allow for each receiving service’s own parsing, cropping and refresh behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same OG image be reused on several pages?
Yes. The metadata can point to one shared image URL, although pages with different subjects usually communicate better with page-specific artwork and alt text.
Should the image description repeat the page caption?
No. og:image:alt describes what is visible in the image; it is distinct from a caption or the page description.
Will adding an OG image improve a normal web-page layout?
No. It primarily supplies a representation for compatible link previews. Your page still needs its own visible images, headings and accessible text.
