Most PDF URLs do not need conversion. If the address points directly to a PDF, download the response and save it with a .pdf filename. For a one-off file, right-click the link in Chrome and choose Save Link As. For repeatable downloads, use curl -L or Wget. Always verify that the response is really a PDF, because a URL ending in .pdf can return an HTML error page, a login screen, or another response.
What a PDF URL actually is
A URL identifies a resource on a server; it is not itself a file format. The server decides what bytes to return. A direct PDF URL normally returns a PDF document, so the practical operation is downloading those bytes to local storage. Changing the address to end in .pdf cannot create a PDF or bypass access controls.
Some links lead to an HTML article or document page that contains a separate PDF download link. In that case, save the actual download link rather than the page URL. A browser may also display a PDF in its built-in viewer while the document remains a downloadable response.
Download one PDF in Chrome
- Open the page containing the PDF link.
- Right-click the link and select Save Link As.
- Choose a folder and keep or edit the proposed filename, retaining the
.pdfextension. - Select Save, then open the saved file from that folder.
If clicking the link opens Chrome’s PDF viewer instead, use the viewer’s download/save button. You can also return to the source page and use Save Link As on the original link, which avoids saving the viewer page.

When browser downloading is the best choice
- You need one file occasionally.
- The site requires a login, subscription, cookie, or other browser session.
- You want Chrome to handle the destination folder and filename prompts.
Download with curl
curl is useful when you need a predictable filename, a script, or redirect handling. The basic command is:
curl -L 'https://example.com/path/document.pdf' -o 'document.pdf'-L follows HTTP redirects, while lowercase -o writes to the local filename you specify. The command creates or replaces document.pdf in your current directory.
Use the filename from the URL
curl -L -O 'https://example.com/path/document.pdf'Uppercase -O (the letter O) derives the local name from the URL path. If the server supplies a preferred name in a Content-Disposition header, combine -O and -J:
curl -L -OJ 'PDF_URL'Review the destination before running either command. Remote-name behavior can overwrite an existing file with the same name in the current directory.

Prevent error pages from being saved as PDFs
curl -L --fail -o document.pdf 'PDF_URL'--fail makes curl stop treating an unsuccessful HTTP status as ordinary downloadable content. This is useful in automation, where an HTML 404 or 403 page should not be silently saved as document.pdf. It does not prove that a successful response is a PDF, so inspect the result as well.
Download with Wget
GNU Wget offers an equivalent explicit-output form:
wget -O document.pdf 'PDF_URL'-O (or --output-document) writes the response to the chosen path. Wget truncates that destination immediately, so do not use a name that contains a file you need unless overwriting it is intentional. For repeatable jobs, place the URL and output path in a script and record failures rather than assuming every request succeeded.
Check that the downloaded file is really a PDF
A .pdf suffix is only a filename convention. If a file will not open, check it before retrying:

- Open it in a PDF reader. A browser login page or error message usually reveals that the response was HTML.
- Inspect the beginning of the file. A normal PDF starts with the signature
%PDF-. - Check the file size. A tiny file after an expected large download often indicates an error or access page.
- For scripted workflows, inspect HTTP status and response headers, and use curl’s
--failoption.
A server can return a valid PDF with a different filename, or return HTML from a URL that looks like a PDF. File contents and the HTTP response matter more than the address suffix.
Redirects, logins and protected downloads
Redirects
Short links and download endpoints commonly redirect to a storage URL. Browser downloads follow redirects automatically. In curl, add -L; without it, you may save only the redirect response or receive an incomplete result.
Authentication and permissions
A browser session may contain cookies, an authorization token, or a login state that a bare terminal request does not have. If curl or Wget receives 401, 403, or an HTML sign-in page, use the site’s permitted download workflow or an authorized client configuration. Do not assume that changing the extension, adding a query string, or guessing a filename grants access.
Pages that embed a PDF
If the address displays an article with an embedded viewer, inspect the page for its explicit download control or PDF link. Saving the page itself produces HTML, not the embedded document.

The file opens as a web page
The server probably returned HTML, often a login, access-denied, not-found, or bot-check page. Open the original link in a browser, authenticate if permitted, and use its download control. In scripts, use curl --fail and inspect the response before retaining the file.

Add -L and confirm that the final URL is accessible. If the final endpoint requires browser cookies or authorization, configure an authorized request or use the site’s supported workflow.

The command overwrote an existing document
Use a new explicit path with -o or wget -O, and check the destination before running. Wget truncates its output file immediately; curl’s remote-name options can reuse a name in the current directory.
The PDF is incomplete or will not open
Delete the bad file, retry from the direct download URL, and compare the resulting size. A timeout, interrupted connection, or intermediary error page can leave a file with a PDF-looking name but invalid contents.
The URL works in Chrome but not in a script
Chrome may be supplying cookies, a user agent, referrer, or authentication that the command-line client lacks. Reuse only credentials you are authorized to use, or download through the browser.
Operational tips for reliable batch downloads
- Write to a temporary filename and rename it only after validation, so downstream jobs never consume a partial file.
- Use explicit output paths and unique names when downloading multiple documents.
- Record the source URL, timestamp, HTTP status, and local filename for auditability.
- Throttle repeated requests and follow the site’s terms and access limits.
- Keep the original URL and final redirected URL when troubleshooting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting a PDF URL change the PDF format?
No. A direct PDF URL normally points to an existing PDF; downloading copies it to your device without re-encoding it.
Can I download a PDF that requires a login with curl?
Only with credentials and access that the site permits. A browser session may work while an unauthenticated curl request receives a refusal or sign-in page.
Why does a PDF URL download an HTML file?
The server may have returned an error, login, bot-check, or document page instead of PDF bytes. Verify the response and use the page’s actual download link.
