Open the page, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (macOS), choose a PDF destination, adjust the print settings, and save. Use an extension when you need article cleanup, a selected element, or controls your browser’s print dialog does not provide.
This guide covers the built-in method first, then a careful extension workflow, permission checks, privacy trade-offs, troubleshooting, and an automated alternative.
1. Try the browser’s built-in PDF printing first
A web page can define a separate print layout, so the PDF may not look exactly like the screen. Mozilla notes that “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen.” Use print preview to catch those changes before saving.
Firefox (desktop)
- Open the page and wait for its text, images, and embedded content to finish loading.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS, or open the Firefox menu and choose Print.
- In Destination, select Save to PDF.
- Set the options you need: orientation, paper size, scale, margins, page range, background graphics, headers and footers, and any simplified format offered by your version.
- Choose Print, select a folder and filename, and save the file.
Chrome and Chromium browsers
- Open the page, then press Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- In the system or browser print dialog, choose Save to PDF (or Print to PDF, depending on the operating system).
- Review destination, pages, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, and background graphics.
- Save the PDF, then open it and check the text, images, links, and page breaks.
If you only need a few pages, enter a page range instead of exporting the entire document. If navigation, advertising, or cookie notices dominate the preview, try a simplified/reader-style print option when available.

2. Prepare the page before exporting
PDF capture records what the browser can render at export time. Preparation prevents most missing-content problems.
- Let loading finish: wait for the page’s spinner, skeleton cards, and image placeholders to disappear.
- Reveal lazy content: on a long page, scroll through the sections you need so images or text loaded only on scroll are requested.
- Expand required sections: open accordions, tabs, “show more” controls, and code blocks before printing.
- Sign in where appropriate: private content is available only if the current browser session has access. Do not give an extension credentials it does not need.
- Close transient UI: dismiss chat bubbles, newsletter prompts, and consent dialogs if they obscure the content.
- Check print preview: look for clipped columns, blank pages, missing backgrounds, and headings stranded at page bottoms.
3. When a browser extension is worth using
An extension is useful when native printing cannot produce the structure you want. Examples include an article-only reading view, exporting one selected element, or a full-page capture workflow with controls not exposed by the print dialog.
Features are extension-specific. A current Chrome Web Store listing for Web to PDF – Save Webpage as PDF describes full-page, selected-element, and article modes, plus paper size, orientation, margins, and layout controls. Those are claims for that listing, not capabilities every PDF extension shares; verify the current listing before installing.
4. Install and use an extension safely in Chrome
- Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the extension you have selected.
- Read the listing’s publisher, version, update date, feature description, privacy disclosure, and requested permissions.
- Select Add to Chrome, then review the permission prompt and approve it only when the requested access matches the job.
- Open the target page and let it load completely.
- Select the extension from the toolbar (use the puzzle-piece menu if it is hidden), choose its article, full-page, or selected-element mode, and start the export.
- Choose a destination and filename when prompted. Open the resulting PDF and verify it before relying on it.
Chrome does not allow extensions to be added while you are browsing as a guest or in Incognito mode, and an organization can block installation. If Add to Chrome is unavailable, those policies or account modes are likely causes.

Limit site access after installation
Chrome can offer access choices such as When you select the extension, On the current site, or On all sites. Choose the narrowest option that still works. In Chrome, permission to read, request, or modify data on every site is broad access; it can include page content and browsing activity. Edge provides comparable site-access controls in its extension settings.
Chrome’s developer guidance recommends requesting only permissions required by a feature and describes activeTab as temporary access to the active tab after a user invokes an extension. That guidance does not prove that a particular PDF extension uses activeTab, so inspect the actual listing and policy.
5. Compare native printing with an extension

6. Fix common PDF-export problems
Background colors or images are missing
Enable Background graphics (or similarly named setting), check margins and scale, and try the other orientation. The site’s print stylesheet may intentionally remove backgrounds or redesign the page.
The PDF has unexpected spacing or a different layout
Compare print preview with the live page. A print-specific stylesheet can hide navigation, change fonts, or reflow columns. Adjust scale and margins, or use an extension’s article/full-page mode if it offers one.

Only part of a long page appears
Wait for loading, scroll through the page to trigger lazy content, refresh, and export again. If you need only a known range, use page selection; if you need one component, use a selected-element mode that the extension explicitly supports.
Dynamic text, images, or charts are blank
Keep the page open until asynchronous requests finish. Expand tabs and accordions, disable temporary overlays, then reopen print preview. Some applications render content only after interaction and may not expose it to printing.
The extension cannot be installed
Check that you are not browsing as a guest or in Incognito mode. On a managed computer, an administrator may block extensions. Ask the administrator rather than installing an unofficial copy.
The extension asks for access to every website
Pause and decide whether that scope is necessary. Look for a setting that limits access to the current site or to a click-activated session. Read the privacy policy and store disclosure; a marketplace statement is not a security audit.

The saved file is corrupt or opens blank
Export again after the page settles, save to a local folder with a short filename, and test the file in another PDF viewer. If only one site fails, its scripts or print stylesheet may be responsible; try native printing and then an extension with a clearly documented alternative mode.
7. Make the workflow repeatable
For occasional documents, name files with the page title and date (for example, api-guide-2026-09-29.pdf) and keep the original URL in the PDF’s notes or your own index. For an archive, record whether you used native print, article cleanup, or selected-element export, because those choices affect what is preserved.
Before distributing a PDF, search it for a distinctive sentence, click a few links, and inspect the final page. A PDF can look complete while silently omitting a lazy-loaded image, an embedded frame, or content hidden behind a collapsed control.

Usually, browser-generated PDFs retain links that the page exposes as normal anchors, but verify important links in the saved file because scripts and print styles can alter or remove them.
