To get an image from a website with Inspect, identify the file the page loaded, open that file’s URL, and save it normally. In Chrome, right-click the image and choose Inspect. Check the selected <img> for src or srcset; if the URL is not obvious, use DevTools’ Network panel while reloading the page. Sources > Page can also preview image files that have already loaded.
This finds a browser resource; it does not grant permission to copy or republish it. The exact result depends on the browser, page code, responsive-image rules, lazy loading, CSS, scripts and your access to the page.
What Inspect can—and cannot—do
Chrome DevTools is built into Chrome (official overview). Inspect selects the DOM element associated with what you clicked; it does not download an image by itself. Your goal is to discover the URL of the requested image, then let the browser open or save that URL.
A page may show a resized responsive variant, a thumbnail, a CSS background, an image loaded only after scrolling, or pixels assembled by JavaScript. Therefore, the first URL you find may not be the largest or original file. Check dimensions, format and context before treating it as the source image.

Method 1: Find a normal image in Elements (Chrome)
- Open the page in Chrome on a desktop browser and make the image visible.
- Right-click the image and select Inspect. Chrome jumps to the related node in the Elements panel, as described in the Chrome DevTools overview.
- Look for an
<img>element. Read itssrcattribute. Also inspectsrcset, which can contain several URLs selected for different viewport widths or pixel densities. - If the value is relative (for example,
/media/photo.webp), combine it with the site’s origin, or right-click the attribute value and choose the browser’s copy-link option when available. - Open the URL in a new tab. If the image displays by itself, use the normal browser save command (for example, right-click and choose Save image as…).
When the selected element is not an img
Some designs place the picture in a wrapper, link or figure. In Elements, move up or down the nearby markup until you find the actual <img>. If there is no image node, inspect the selected element’s styles for background-image: url(...). Copy that URL, open it in a tab and save it if the server permits.
Choosing among srcset candidates
srcset may list width descriptors such as 480w and 1600w, or density descriptors such as 1x and 2x. The browser chooses according to the viewport and device pixel ratio. A larger candidate is not necessarily the original: it can still be compressed, cropped or access-controlled. Verify the natural dimensions in the opened file or in DevTools’ properties.
Method 2: Use Network when Elements does not reveal the URL
The Network panel records requests while DevTools is open. Chrome’s network tutorial recommends opening it before reloading so the requests are captured.

- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS), then select Network.
- Reload the page while Network is visible. If the image appears only after scrolling, scroll to it; lazy-loaded requests may not exist until that moment.
- Use the resource-type filter for Img or type an identifying word in the filter box. Sort by name, size or time to narrow the list.
- Click a likely request. In Headers, check the Request URL and response status. In Preview, confirm that the content is the image you want; Chrome specifically documents Preview as useful for inspecting images.
- Right-click the request and use Open in new tab or copy the URL, then save the standalone file with the browser’s normal command.
Why reload matters
Network is not a historical index of every file a site could contain. It shows traffic recorded while the panel is open. A prior page load, a cached resource or a state you have not reached may leave no request in the current log. Reloading and reproducing the action that reveals the image gives you the best chance of capturing the correct request.

Method 3: Browse loaded files in Sources
- Open DevTools and choose Sources.
- In the left-hand Page tree, browse the domains and folders shown.
- Select an image file. Chrome’s Sources documentation states: “For images, you see a preview of the image.”
- Use the file’s context menu or its displayed URL to open it in a new tab, then save it normally.
The Page tree represents resources the page has loaded. It cannot expose an image that was never requested in the current state, an asset hidden behind a later interaction, or pixels that exist only in a canvas.
Firefox: the equivalent workflow
Firefox calls the entry point Inspect Element. Right-click the target and choose that command, or open Web Developer Tools and select the Inspector, as documented by Mozilla’s Inspector guide. In the Inspector, look for src, srcset and CSS background-image. Firefox’s Network and Debugger/Source views provide similar clues, but labels, keyboard shortcuts and context-menu wording vary by browser version.

Cases that need a different approach
Lazy-loaded images
An image may use data-src, loading="lazy" or a script that swaps attributes after scrolling. Scroll the image into view with Network open, then inspect the request that appears. Do not assume a placeholder URL is the real file.
CSS backgrounds
Hero banners and icons are often backgrounds rather than image elements. Inspect the element’s computed or matched styles and locate url(...). Multiple media-query rules can provide different files at different widths; the active rule is the one rendered at your current viewport.

A <picture> can contain several <source> elements plus a fallback <img>. The browser may request only one candidate. Network shows the candidate actually delivered; Elements shows the alternatives declared in markup.
Blob URLs, data URLs and canvas
blob: URLs refer to data held by the page and may stop working after the tab closes. A data: URL embeds the bytes directly. Canvas output may have no standalone image request at all. In these cases, use an authorized export or download function supplied by the site rather than trying to bypass controls.

Authentication, hotlink protection and failed requests
A copied URL can return an error when it requires your session cookies, a signed token, a Referer header or an expiring URL. Keep the work in the same authenticated browser session, and do not attempt to defeat access restrictions. A 403, CAPTCHA or login wall is an access condition, not an invitation to circumvent it.
Saving safely and checking what you found
- Confirm the file: open the URL and check that the subject, dimensions and format match the visible image.
- Expect variants: CDNs commonly resize, crop, convert to WebP/AVIF or serve a thumbnail.
- Keep context: record the page URL and any attribution or license information shown with the image.
- Do not harvest unrelated assets: downloading every request can collect private, licensed or security-sensitive files.
- Respect access controls: use the site’s own download or export feature when one exists.

Rights, licensing and privacy
Finding a copy is separate from having permission to reuse it. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that original photographs can be protected (What Does Copyright Protect?) and that owning a copy does not transfer copyright. Its Fair Use FAQ describes fair use as a fact-specific limitation, not a blanket download license. Check the page’s license, obtain permission when required, preserve attribution terms and account for the law where you are located. Do not use inspection to expose private images or evade authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Inspect recover an image that was never loaded?
No. Elements, Network and Sources can reveal references or resources loaded in the current page state, but not a file the page never requested or pixels produced without a retrievable resource.
Is the largest image URL always the original?
No. It may be a resized, cropped or recompressed CDN variant. Check dimensions, format and the page’s license before reuse.
Why does a copied image URL stop working later?
Some URLs are session-bound or signed with an expiration time. Use the site’s authorized download flow instead of trying to bypass the restriction.
