Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Chrome does not show Capture a full size screenshot, you are probably looking in the wrong DevTools context. Chrome documents the full-page command in Device Mode: open DevTools for the page, enable Device Mode, open the Device Mode More options menu, and choose Capture a full size screenshot. The separate Capture screenshot command captures only the current viewport.
The documented way to capture an entire page
Use this route on the tab you want to save:
- Open the page in Google Chrome.
- Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- Turn on Device Mode by clicking the phone-and-tablet icon in the DevTools toolbar. If the toolbar is narrow, open the DevTools overflow menu and choose the device-mode option.
- In the device preview toolbar, open More options (the three-dot menu).
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome captures the page beyond the visible viewport and downloads an image. Choose Capture screenshot from that same menu when you need only what is currently visible. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes these as separate actions: the full-size command includes content outside the viewport, while the ordinary capture is viewport-only. See the current instructions in Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
Why the command appears to be missing
You are checking the wrong menu
The full-page action is documented under Device Mode’s More options menu. It is not the same workflow as searching the regular DevTools panels or the Command Menu. Enter Device Mode first, then inspect the three-dot menu in the device toolbar.
You are confusing three different capture commands
| Need | Documented route | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport only | Device Mode > More options > Capture screenshot | The portion currently visible in the viewport |
| Entire page | Device Mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot | The full page, including content outside the viewport |
| A selected rectangle | Command Menu > Capture area screenshot | An area you drag-select |
The Command Menu documentation describes area capture, not the Device Mode full-size command. Its area-capture instructions also state that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. That limitation should not be treated as proof that undocking disables Device Mode’s full-size command; the cited documentation does not make that claim. Read the Command Menu instructions at Chrome for Developers.

The Command Menu shortcut is not the full-size shortcut
Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac opens the DevTools Command Menu. It is useful for commands such as area capture, but the current documented location for full-page capture remains Device Mode > More options. Searching the Command Menu for a full-size phrase can therefore make the feature look absent even when it is available in the device toolbar.
A reliable diagnostic sequence
Work through these checks in order rather than changing several settings at once:
- Confirm DevTools is attached to the correct tab. Close and reopen DevTools from the page you intend to capture.
- Enable Device Mode. The command belongs to the device toolbar, so the phone-and-tablet toggle must be active.
- Open the device toolbar’s menu. Use the three-dot More options control inside Device Mode, not the main DevTools menu.
- Look for the exact label. Chrome uses Capture a full size screenshot; Capture screenshot is the viewport-only command.
- Try a fresh DevTools session. Close DevTools, reopen it, enable Device Mode again, and inspect the same menu. This resets the UI state without assuming a particular operating system, docking position, or Chrome build is the cause.
- Check the result location. Chrome normally downloads the image using the browser’s configured download destination. If the command runs but no file is visible, check the download shelf, the downloads page, and the configured folder.
The official material does not establish a single confirmed cause for a missing command tied to a specific Chrome version, operating system, docking state, or preference. Treat those as variables to check, not as proven explanations.
When the page itself makes a full-size capture difficult
Finding the command and producing a useful image are separate problems. Before capturing, make the page representative of the state you need:

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- Wait for the page’s visible content to finish loading before opening the menu.
- Dismiss any dialog that covers the content you need to document, or capture the dialog deliberately if it is part of the result.
- Set the device dimensions and orientation in Device Mode before taking the shot; changing them afterward changes the layout you captured.
- For a long page, verify that the saved image contains the lower sections you expect. If content is loaded only after an interaction, perform that interaction first and then capture.
- Use the viewport command when the deliverable is a screen-state image rather than a document of the whole page.
These choices affect the page state you submit to Chrome; they do not change which menu contains the full-size command.
Chrome version and historical context
Chrome’s DevTools release notes say full-page screenshots were introduced in Chrome 59: What’s New In DevTools (Chrome 59). That is historical context, not a guarantee that every current installation exposes an identical menu or that a particular missing-command symptom has one known cause. For current usage, follow the Device Mode documentation and use the exact labels shown there.
What to do if native capture still does not meet the job
Chrome DevTools is convenient for an occasional manual image. A repeatable workflow—such as capturing many URLs, applying the same viewport, or running from CI—needs a browser-automation or screenshot service instead. For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try because it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The service accepts the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The API also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
For the complete parameter list, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Use it from an AI agent
ScreenshotNeo includes an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and any MCP client. Its tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf, so an agent can inspect a page, capture an image or create a PDF without you wiring a local browser session.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
“Capture screenshot” is visible, but “Capture a full size screenshot” is not
That usually means you are reading the two labels as interchangeable. Stay in Device Mode, open its own More options menu, and look for the full-size wording exactly. Do not substitute the viewport command when you need the page below the fold.
The Command Menu finds “Capture area screenshot,” but not full size
This is expected from the documented separation. Use the Device Mode menu for full-page capture. Use the Command Menu only when you want to drag-select an area; remember that the area workflow is documented as unavailable while DevTools is undocked.

The saved image is shorter than expected
First confirm that you chose Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. Then return to the page, allow its content to load, perform any required interaction, and capture again. Check the downloaded file rather than judging only the preview.
The image is the wrong layout
Device Mode controls the emulated viewport. Set the intended dimensions, orientation and device preset before opening the capture menu, then repeat the capture.
