Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Selenium’s Internet Explorer 11 screenshot shows only the visible viewport, first verify the IE driver environment and record the exact Selenium and IEDriver versions. A screenshot of the current browsing context should not be assumed to stitch together every scrolled section of a document. For a manual full-page image, Microsoft documents a full-page Screenshot feature in Edge; for automated legacy compatibility, consider Edge in IE Compatibility Mode and verify behavior on your actual versions and page.
First determine what the screenshot is supposed to contain
There are two different outcomes that are easy to conflate:
- Viewport screenshot: an image of the browser content currently visible in the browsing context.
- Full-page screenshot: an image that includes document content beyond the visible viewport, including off-screen sections.
Selenium documents screenshots of the current browsing context and treats fullscreen as a separate window operation. Making the browser fullscreen enlarges its display area; it is not a dependable way to stitch the entire document into one image. Likewise, scrolling the page before a capture changes what is visible, but does not by itself establish that successive screenshots will be combined.
So, if the requirement is a screenshot of a particular section, scroll to it and capture that view. If the requirement is one image of the entire page, use a capture method intended to produce a full-page result rather than assuming that an ordinary WebDriver screenshot will do so.

Check the IE11 WebDriver environment before changing screenshot code
Internet Explorer WebDriver can fail or behave inconsistently when its environment does not meet the driver’s requirements. Selenium’s IE driver guidance calls out the following settings. Validate them before treating the screenshot symptom as a bug in your capture command.
Verify Protected Mode, zoom, and display scaling
- Set Protected Mode consistently across all Internet Explorer security zones.
- Keep IE browser zoom at 100%.
- On Windows 10, set Windows display scaling to 100% for the target environment.
These are environment prerequisites, not full-page capture switches. Correcting them can address driver setup problems, but it does not guarantee that a viewport screenshot becomes a stitched document image.
Check the IE11 FEATURE_BFCACHE setting
Selenium’s IE driver documentation specifies a DWORD named iexplore.exe with value 0 in the FEATURE_BFCACHE registry setting for IE11. The applicable registry location differs between 32-bit and 64-bit installations. Follow Selenium’s instructions for the target installation rather than copying a registry path intended for a different architecture. Incorrect registry edits can affect the browser, so confirm the location and value before changing anything.

Prefer the 32-bit IEDriverServer for a retained standalone IE setup
Selenium notes known limitations with the 64-bit IE driver and recommends the 32-bit driver for standalone IE. If the test still needs standalone IE11, record the driver architecture and use the recommended 32-bit driver as part of the controlled setup.

Screenshot behavior is version- and environment-dependent. Before upgrading or downgrading anything, capture enough detail to reproduce the result:
- Selenium binding and version.
- IEDriverServer version and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Browser target: standalone IE11 or Edge running in IE Compatibility Mode.
- Windows version and, for Windows 10, display scaling.
- Whether the run is local or through Selenium Grid.
- The target page, the scroll position, and whether the expected image is viewport-sized or document-sized.
A Selenium issue opened on November 2, 2017 reports a Windows 10 setup with Selenium 3.6.0 and IE 11 version 11.1770.14393.0 (32-bit). The reporter said that after moving from Selenium 2.48.0, GetScreenshot() showed visible content rather than the expected full page. That is evidence of a version-specific report, not proof that the same change causes the symptom on every current binding, driver, site, or Grid deployment.

Separate scrolling from taking the screenshot
Check that your test actually scrolls the intended page or element before capturing it. A page may have its own scrollable container, lazy-loaded content, or a location different from the one your test expects. Inspect the browser state or take a viewport capture after the scroll to confirm the visible region.
A minimal Python example using Selenium’s screenshot method is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsfrom selenium import webdriver
# Configure this driver for the IE/IEDriver environment you have installed.
driver = webdriver.Ie()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
driver.execute_script("window.scrollTo(0, document.body.scrollHeight);")
driver.save_screenshot("viewport.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
This code illustrates navigation, scrolling, and saving the current screenshot; it does not promise a full-document image. Use your installed Selenium binding and IEDriver setup, and verify the actual output dimensions and contents. If the page uses an inner scrolling element, scroll that element instead of the window.

Choose a full-page capture route deliberately
Manual capture: use Edge’s Screenshot feature
For a one-off manual image, Microsoft documents Edge’s Screenshot feature as able to capture a full webpage, including content outside the visible viewport, and to copy or save the capture. In Edge, open the page, invoke Screenshot, choose Capture full page, then copy or save the resulting image. This is a browser UI workflow, not an automated Selenium replacement.
Automated legacy compatibility: investigate Edge IE Compatibility Mode
Selenium’s official support for standalone Internet Explorer ended in June 2022. Selenium’s IE driver can run Microsoft Edge in IE Compatibility Mode, which is the documented path to investigate when legacy IE compatibility is still required. This does not establish that every existing IE11 test can be moved unchanged, or that a particular full-page screenshot behavior is available across all Selenium and driver versions. Verify the relevant capabilities and capture results with the precise versions and page used in your deployment.
Keep viewport and full-page requirements separate in test design
If a test only needs evidence of a state after an action, a viewport capture may be sufficient and more directly reflects what the browser displayed. If reviewers need the complete long page in one artifact, define that requirement explicitly and select a capture path that supports it. Do not use fullscreen as a substitute for proving full-document capture.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot shows only what is on screen. | The capture may be a current-context/viewport screenshot, not a stitched full-page image. | Confirm the required output. Use Edge’s manual full-page Screenshot feature, or validate an automated route on the installed Selenium and driver versions. |
| IE launches unreliably or commands behave inconsistently. | Protected Mode may differ between zones; zoom, display scaling, or the IE11 registry setting may not meet IEDriver requirements. | Check each prerequisite in the target environment, including the correct registry location for its architecture. |
| A 64-bit standalone IE driver is in use. | Selenium notes known limitations for the 64-bit IE driver. | For a retained standalone IE setup, try the recommended 32-bit IEDriverServer and record the result. |
| The result changed after a Selenium upgrade. | A historical Selenium 3.6.0/IE11 report demonstrates that version combinations can matter, but does not establish a universal regression. | Reproduce with the exact Selenium, driver, browser, operating system, and target page recorded; compare controlled versions rather than assuming a general fix. |
| The page appears not to scroll. | The test may be scrolling the window while the content is inside a separate scrollable element. | Verify the actual scroll position and target the element that owns the scroll region before capturing. |
| Fullscreen still omits the lower page. | Fullscreen enlarges the browser display area; Selenium documents it separately from screenshot capture. | Use a full-page capture method rather than treating fullscreen as document stitching. |
Or skip the browser setup

What to conclude from the evidence
There is no universal Selenium code change established here that turns every Internet Explorer 11 screenshot into a full-page image. Confirm the IEDriver prerequisites, isolate the exact version combination, and decide whether you need a viewport artifact or a complete-page capture. Standalone IE is outside Selenium’s official support policy; Edge IE Compatibility Mode is the documented legacy direction, while Edge’s Screenshot UI is the documented manual full-page route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium’s fullscreen command capture the whole document?
No. Fullscreen changes the browser display area; it should not be treated as a full-document stitching command.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the 2017 Selenium issue prove that a specific current version is broken?
No. It describes one Windows 10, Selenium 3.6.0, and IE 11 setup and cannot establish behavior for other versions or environments.
Can Edge IE Compatibility Mode be assumed to fix full-page screenshots?
No universal full-page capture behavior is established. Verify it with the Selenium, IEDriver, Edge, and page versions you actually use.
