Yes. Instagram does not currently notify the owner when you screenshot a regular Instagram Story. However, if you watch the Story while signed in, your account can still appear in the Story’s viewer list. That viewing record and a screenshot alert are separate things.
What Instagram shows—and what it does not
For a normal 24-hour Instagram Story, current reporting says the owner is not sent a notification when you take a screenshot. Instagram may record that your account viewed the Story, but the viewer list does not identify which viewers captured an image.
This answer is about the screenshot event itself. It does not mean your activity is invisible. Opening a Story while logged in can add your account to the owner’s viewer list, depending on Instagram’s current interface and account conditions.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a Story?
For regular Stories, no screenshot notification is currently reported by Android Authority and ContentStudio’s updated July 2026 coverage. Instagram’s behavior can change through app updates, experiments, account types, or regional rollouts, so treat this as the current documented behavior rather than a permanent promise.

The owner can still infer that you saw the content if your account is listed as a viewer. Instagram does not, according to the cited reporting, mark a particular viewer as the person who took a screenshot.
Important exceptions: disappearing messages are not Stories
Do not apply the Story rule to every image or video you receive on Instagram. Temporary media sent in Direct messages uses different protections.
View Once and Allow Replay media
In an October 17, 2024 Newsroom announcement, Meta said: “Soon, we’ll no longer allow people to use their device to directly screenshot or screen record ephemeral images or videos sent in private messages.” The announcement concerned Instagram’s View Once and Allow Replay media and also said those media would no longer open on Instagram Web.
That is a private-message feature, not a regular Story. The announcement is dated, and this information does not independently verify every device, account, or rollout state. A current app build may block a capture, show an indicator, or behave differently as Meta changes the feature.

Android Authority reports that Instagram notifies users about screenshots in Vanish Mode and for disappearing camera media. These are separate messaging modes with temporary content. They should not be used as evidence that ordinary Stories generate screenshot alerts.

How to screenshot a regular Story
If you are saving a normal Story for a legitimate reason, the technical action is the same as any other phone screenshot. The privacy result is not anonymity: viewing it can still associate your account with the Story.
iPhone with Face ID
- Open the Story in Instagram.
- Press the side button and the volume-up button at the same time.
- Release both buttons quickly. A thumbnail appears in the lower-left corner.
- Tap the thumbnail to edit or share, or swipe it away to save the image in Photos.
iPhone with a Home button
- Open the Story.
- Press the side or top button and the Home button together.
- Release both buttons, then open the thumbnail or leave it to save automatically.
Android phones
- Open the Story you want to capture.
- Press the power and volume-down buttons together. On some models you must hold them briefly.
- Use the screenshot preview to crop, annotate, or share, or wait for it to disappear.
Android button combinations and screenshot panels vary by manufacturer. The phone’s screenshot control, Google Assistant, or Quick Settings tile may provide an alternative. Neither operating system can guarantee that a future Instagram version will handle every content type the same way.
What not to assume
- Airplane Mode is not a guarantee. Instagram can cache content, reconnect later, or change how it records views. Do not treat a network toggle as a reliable privacy method.
- Screen recording is not automatically different. For ordinary Stories, current reporting does not describe a screenshot alert; temporary DM media may be blocked or indicated.
- Third-party “who screenshotted me” apps cannot reveal an official Story screenshot list. Avoid giving such services your Instagram password or access token. Instagram does not provide a documented list of Story screenshots for these apps to retrieve.
- Private content deserves consent. A lack of notification is not permission to redistribute someone’s image, especially when it contains personal information.
How to check whether your account was seen
If you posted the Story, open Instagram and view your own Story. The viewer control shows accounts that watched it while the Story is available, subject to Instagram’s retention rules and account interface. That list answers “who viewed this?” It does not answer “who saved a screenshot?”
If a viewer disappears, the cause could be an account block, deactivation, privacy change, or an interface update. The absence of an account from a list is not proof that the person did not capture the screen.
Safer ways to preserve or share Story content
Ask the creator for the original
Request the image or video directly if you need to reuse, archive, or publish it. The creator can provide the original file and permission for the intended use.

Use Instagram’s built-in sharing controls
When available, use the share, mention, or direct-message controls rather than making an undisclosed copy. These controls preserve more context and reduce accidental redistribution.
Protect sensitive material
Do not capture or forward intimate images, private conversations, identifying documents, or a minor’s content without clear permission. Screenshot notifications are a technical feature; they are not a substitute for consent.

Troubleshooting and edge cases
You saw a screenshot warning
Check whether the content was sent as View Once or Allow Replay media, or appeared in Vanish Mode. Those are temporary DM features, not ordinary Stories, and can have screenshot protections.

The Story will not load
The account may be private, the Story may have expired, you may be blocked or restricted, or Instagram may be experiencing an outage. A failed load does not establish whether a screenshot alert would have appeared.
You need a copy for work
Ask for the original file and written permission. A screenshot can lower image quality, omit captions or accessibility context, and create rights or privacy problems even when no notification is sent.
