Snipping Tool does not currently document a scrolling or full-page screenshot mode. Its image snips capture a freeform or rectangular selection, a window, or the full screen as it appears at that moment. To create one tall image of an entire webpage, use a capture method that explicitly supports full-page or scrolling screenshots instead. You can still use Snipping Tool for ordinary screen captures, annotations, OCR, and short video recordings.
What “scrolling screenshot” means
A scrolling screenshot is one still image that contains content extending beyond the visible screen. For example, a long article, settings page, invoice, or conversation can be captured from top to bottom without manually saving many separate images.
That is different from capturing a window. A window snip records only the portion currently visible inside the selected window; it does not automatically scroll through the rest of the document and stitch the views together. It is also different from a video snip, which records motion in a selected rectangular area rather than producing one tall still image.
Does Snipping Tool support scrolling screenshots?
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool documentation for Windows 11 and Windows 10 lists four image modes: freeform, rectangle, window, and full screen. The guide does not list a scrolling, panorama, or full-page image mode. Therefore, there is no documented Snipping Tool workflow that automatically scrolls a webpage and combines it into one image.

Microsoft’s separate Microsoft 365 instructions likewise describe inserting a screenshot of an available window or taking a screen clipping from the visible screen. They do not describe capturing the complete scrollable contents of a long webpage. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide and the Microsoft 365 screenshot instructions.
This is a limitation of the documented feature set, not a setting you have overlooked. Do not expect the Window or Full-screen buttons to produce a complete page when the page is longer than the display.
How to take a normal screenshot with Snipping Tool
Use this process when you need a still image of what is visible, rather than an entire scrollable page.
- Open the page or application you want to capture and put the relevant content on screen.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. You can also press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the image-capture overlay immediately.
- Choose the mode that matches the visible area you need:
- Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around part of the visible screen.
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline around the visible area.
- Window snip: select an open window; only its currently displayed contents are captured.
- Full-screen snip: capture the screens as they are displayed at that instant.
- If you opened the full Snipping Tool window, select New, then make the selection. With the keyboard shortcut, select a mode in the overlay and drag or click as prompted.
- When the image opens in Snipping Tool, use its editing controls to annotate or crop it. Microsoft also documents text extraction (OCR) for supported captures.
- Select the save control, choose a location and image format, and save the file. You can also share the result from the app.
These steps capture the visible screen. If the document continues below the bottom edge, repeat captures while scrolling and combine them manually only if separate images are acceptable. That manual process is not an automatic scrolling screenshot and can introduce gaps or duplicated content.
Why the video snip is not a scrolling still image
Snipping Tool has a separate video feature that records a selected rectangular area. Recording while you scroll can show the whole page as a movie, but it does not create a single tall PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. Use video only when motion or a demonstration is the desired result.

Practical options when you need the entire page
Use a capture method that advertises full-page support
For a long webpage, select software or a service whose documentation explicitly says it captures a full page, scrolls the page automatically, or renders the complete document. Check whether it returns a still image or a PDF, how it handles lazy-loaded images, and whether it can deal with pages that require cookies, authentication, or JavaScript.
Availability, controls, privacy terms, and pricing vary among third-party tools. The Microsoft documentation linked above establishes Snipping Tool’s supported modes, but it does not verify particular browser extensions or other products. Treat claims about any alternative as something to confirm in that product’s current documentation.
Capture separate Snipping Tool images
If no full-page method is permitted, take overlapping rectangular or window snips as you scroll. Keep a consistent zoom level, include a small overlap between images, and name the files in order. This produces a set of still images rather than a single scrolling screenshot. Stitching them later requires separate image-editing software and careful alignment.

Use a PDF when a tall image is not essential
If your real goal is to preserve or share a long document, a PDF-producing capture may be more useful than a very tall bitmap. Confirm that the method you choose supports the page range, paper size, margins, and layout you need. A PDF is a different deliverable from a scrolling screenshot, so check the recipient’s requirements first.

The shortcut does nothing
Press the Windows logo key and Shift and S together. If the overlay still does not appear, open Snipping Tool from Start and select New. Confirm that the keyboard focus is not being intercepted by a remote-desktop session or another application.
The capture stops at the bottom of the screen
That is expected for a normal rectangle, window, or full-screen snip. Those modes capture what is visible; they do not scroll the page. Use a full-page-capable method or save several overlapping snips.

Bring the intended window to the foreground before choosing Window snip. For a precise area, use Rectangle instead. A window snip does not mean “all content belonging to this window”; it means the window’s currently displayed surface.

The page changes while you capture it
Pause animations, close menus, and wait for the content you need to finish loading before selecting New. A normal snip records the pixels shown at capture time and cannot reconstruct content that was never visible.
You need text from the image
Use Snipping Tool’s documented text-extraction feature after taking the still image, then review the extracted text for errors. OCR does not extend the capture beyond the visible area.

- Decide whether you need a visible-screen image, a set of images, a PDF, or one complete tall image.
- For Snipping Tool, select the mode that matches only the visible area you need.
- Do not mistake Window snip or video snip for full-page still capture.
- For automation, verify that the chosen service supports full-page capture and the page’s loading requirements.
- Remove private data from the page or use authorized credentials and appropriate access controls before capturing.
- Open the saved file and check the top, bottom, lazy-loaded images, text, and interactive states before sharing it.

Can I make Snipping Tool scroll while I hold the mouse button?
No documented Snipping Tool image mode automatically scrolls and stitches a page. Scrolling while making separate selections creates multiple images, not one full-page file.
Is a full-screen snip the same as a scrolling screenshot?
No. Full-screen snip captures the pixels currently displayed on the screen. It does not include content below the visible viewport.
Should I use a video snip for a long webpage?
Only if a recording is acceptable. Video snip records a selected rectangular area; it does not output one tall still image.
