YouTube also notes that vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail in certain surfaces.

Your account must be verified before you can use custom thumbnails. Making the image in an app does not upload it to YouTube: open YouTube Studio, choose the video in its publishing workflow, select the custom-thumbnail option, upload the file, and save or publish. Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines; consult YouTube’s current help page for the complete policy.
Adobe Express import limits versus YouTube limits
Adobe’s import documentation lists AI, GIF, HEIC, JPEG/JPG, PNG, PSD/PSDT, SVG, and WEBP files. It states a maximum image resolution of 65 megapixels, an 80 MB limit for desktop web imports, and a 40 MB limit in the mobile app. These are limits for bringing source material into Adobe Express, not limits for a finished YouTube thumbnail.
For example, an 80 MB source photo may import successfully on desktop but still fail YouTube’s 50 MB desktop video-thumbnail cap, or the 2 MB mobile cap. Resize or recompress the exported image when necessary, and confirm that text and faces remain sharp after compression.

- Text is unreadable: reduce the word count, enlarge the type, increase contrast, and remove competing background detail.
- The subject disappears: crop tighter, brighten the subject, darken the background, or add a restrained outline.
