To make a JPG table editable in Word, first extract its contents into cells in Excel, then copy those cells into Word. In Excel for Microsoft 365, use Data > From Picture > Picture From File, review and correct the recognized data, and select Insert Data. Inserting the JPG directly into Word displays the table as a picture; it does not turn the picture’s contents into editable cells.
Choose the right method for your source

The key distinction is between displaying a table and extracting its contents. A picture is the better fit when preserving the original appearance matters more than changing individual values. Use image-to-data recognition when you need to edit, sort, or reformat the table’s contents.
Convert a JPG table into editable Word cells
1. Import the image into Excel
- Open Excel and go to Data > From Picture > Picture From File.
- Select the JPG containing the table. Excel’s documented workflow can also use a screen capture copied to the clipboard.
- Crop the image to include the table, excluding surrounding page content where possible. A tightly framed, straight-on image gives the recognition process a clearer target than a skewed photo with extra material around it.
The feature is documented for Excel for Microsoft 365. Its availability and prerequisites depend on the platform. Microsoft specifies that on Windows it requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later, or Windows 11, and the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. Check Excel’s available commands on your platform if From Picture does not appear.
2. Review recognition before inserting
Excel analyzes the image and presents recognized entries for review. Check the values and structure before selecting Insert Data; do not treat the first extraction as a verified copy of the source. OCR can misread characters, and a character error may change a number or alter the meaning of a row.

- Compare every numeric value with the source, especially decimal marks, minus signs, and digits that look alike.
- Check punctuation, dates, currency symbols, and other marks that may be important in your table.
- Confirm that headers and values appear in the correct columns and that rows have not shifted or been split incorrectly.
- Look for missing, duplicated, or merged cells. If the table has complex cell boundaries, check that its layout still makes sense in the extracted grid.
- Where a cell is unclear, use the JPG as the authority and correct the result in the review step or in Excel after insertion.
Microsoft lists character-set support that includes English, French, German, Spanish, and several other European languages; its published list does not establish support for every language. If the table uses a language or writing system not listed, expect to verify recognition particularly carefully rather than assuming it will work reliably.
3. Insert and prepare the cells
Once you have checked the recognition, select Insert Data to place it into Excel cells. Inspect the inserted grid against the JPG again, then make any needed corrections in Excel. This also gives you a chance to add or remove rows and columns before moving the content into Word.

4. Copy the table into Word
- Select the Excel cells you want to transfer and copy them.
- Open the Word document and place the cursor where the table should go.
- Paste the cells. The result is a Word table you can format and edit, rather than the original JPG.
- Adjust the table’s layout in Word as needed, including column widths, alignment, and borders. Compare the finished table with the source image to catch any mistakes introduced during extraction or formatting.
The image-to-data step is Excel’s documented feature; moving its resulting cells into Word is the practical handoff that completes the editable-table workflow. If preserving the source’s exact visual layout is more important than editing the values, use the picture route instead.
Insert the JPG into Word without converting it
If the table only needs to be visible, Word for Windows supports inserting JPG, PNG, or GIF files as pictures. In Word, choose Insert > Pictures and select the JPG. You can then position and size the picture in the document, but the table’s words and numbers remain part of the image rather than becoming individual cell contents.

This is often the simpler choice for a one-page reference or a table whose appearance must remain as captured. It is not a shortcut to an editable table: changing a value means editing the original image or using a recognition workflow to extract the data.
If your source is a scanned PDF instead
Word can attempt to convert a scanned PDF into editable content when you open it. Microsoft says this works best for documents that are mostly text, and that the converted pages may not correspond perfectly to the original. Treat it as a possible route for a text-heavy PDF, not as a guaranteed way to reconstruct a clean table. For a JPG table, Excel’s Data from Picture workflow is the documented image-to-data route described above.

What affects conversion quality
Image clarity and orientation
A tightly cropped, front-facing source gives the recognition process a clearer view of the table. If the JPG is angled, blurry, or surrounded by unrelated content, correct or recapture the image if practical before importing it. Microsoft notes that recognition accuracy depends on scan quality and text clarity; handwritten text is seldom recognized when scanned text or images are inserted into Word. These limitations are a reason to proofread, not a guarantee that a particular image will fail.
Language and characters
Microsoft’s published supported-character list is not universal. Pay attention to accented letters, non-Latin scripts, and specialized symbols when checking a table, particularly if its language is not represented in the listed character sets.

Table structure
Recognition has to identify both text and where it belongs. A correct-looking set of values can still be wrong if a row or column boundary is misplaced. Check headings, alignment, and cell relationships alongside spelling and numbers. Tables with merged cells or unusual layouts deserve a careful structural comparison before you rely on the extracted version.

- “From Picture” is missing: Confirm that you are using an Excel version and platform where the feature is available. The cited Microsoft documentation covers Excel for Microsoft 365; for Windows it specifies Windows 10 version 1903 or later, Windows 11, and WebView2 Runtime.
- Excel recognizes too little or produces incorrect entries: Crop to the table, use a clear straight-on image, and review the proposed data closely. Correct the source image if it is hard to read; do not insert unverified output.
- Numbers or punctuation are wrong: Compare those cells directly with the JPG, including decimal marks, signs, and symbols. Correct the recognized values in Excel before copying them into Word.
- Rows or columns do not line up: Check the extracted grid against the image cell by cell. Correct shifted entries and verify merged or irregular cells rather than relying on the apparent order of the text alone.
- The JPG looks right in Word, but cannot be edited: That is expected when it was inserted as a picture. Run the image through Excel’s Data from Picture workflow to extract cells, then transfer the checked cells into Word.
- A converted PDF has different page breaks or layout: Word’s PDF conversion may not reproduce the original pages exactly. Review the converted document and repair the layout; a scanned PDF conversion is not a promise of faithful table reconstruction.
When a third-party OCR add-on may fit
A Google Workspace Marketplace listing describes a third-party add-on for extracting text and tables from images or PDFs, with output to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Excel. It may be worth assessing if you already work in Google Workspace and want an alternative workflow. It is third-party software, and the listing requests Google Drive-related permissions; review its current listing, requested access, and suitability before granting permissions. The listed capabilities do not establish that its results will be error-free.
