You can take a screenshot without creating a file: copy it to the system clipboard for immediate pasting, or keep the pixels in an application-managed image object or frame buffer for processing. Both approaches avoid an intentional disk write by your capture code, but neither makes the image permanent—and neither guarantees that the operating system or another utility will not retain a copy.
Choose where the screenshot should go
Start with what you need to do next. If you want to paste the image into a message or document, capture to the clipboard. If your program needs to inspect, edit, or transform pixels, capture into memory. Export to a file only when the image needs to outlive the clipboard contents or the process that holds it.
| Need | Good fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Paste once into another app | Operating-system clipboard shortcut | Clipboard contents are transient and can be replaced. |
| Process pixels in code | Windows.Graphics.Capture or Pillow ImageGrab | Permissions and platform APIs differ. |
| Return a capture to a packaged Windows app | Windows Snipping Tool protocol redirect | The redirect callback requires a packaged app. |
| Put a generated image on a web clipboard | Async Clipboard API with ClipboardItem | Browser security and permission policies apply. |
| Keep the image after a process exits or the computer restarts | Explicit file export | This deliberately writes the image to storage. |

Windows: use Snipping Tool
For an interactive capture, use the Windows screen-capture experience and copy the result rather than saving it. The Snipping Tool protocol can also be invoked with ms-screenclip://capture/image. A packaged app can register a redirect URI to receive the result. The optional auto-save query flag controls whether the request asks Snipping Tool to automatically save the capture; leaving it out does not request automatic saving. Microsoft documents rectangle, freeform, and window capture modes in its screen snipping protocol documentation.
The redirect route is not a general callback mechanism for every Windows program: an unpackaged Win32 app cannot receive that redirect response. If you are building an unpackaged app, use a different capture path or package the app. For programmatic capture, see Windows.Graphics.Capture below.

macOS: hold Control with the screenshot shortcut
To copy a full-screen screenshot, press Control+Command+Shift+3. For a selection, press Control+Command+Shift+4, then select the area. Holding Control sends the capture to the clipboard instead of the desktop as a file. The cross-platform clipboard project’s documentation identifies PNG as the built-in image clipboard format and documents the selection shortcut as Ctrl+Shift+Cmd+4 (Clipboard project documentation).
Paste with Command+V in an app that accepts images. The screenshot is available only while it remains on the clipboard; copying something else can replace it.
Use the clipboard carefully
A clipboard is convenient, not a private or durable archive. Clipboard managers, cloud clipboard synchronization, crash reporters, or other utilities may retain clipboard contents beyond the immediate paste. If the capture contains sensitive information, consider those utilities and your device’s clipboard settings before copying it.
Capture pixels in memory with Python
Pillow’s ImageGrab.grab() returns a PIL image object. The object remains in memory until your program releases it or explicitly saves it. This example captures the whole screen and prints the image dimensions without writing a file:

from PIL import ImageGrab
# Entire screen, kept as a PIL image in memory
image = ImageGrab.grab()
# Process or paste through another library here; do not call image.save()
print(image.size)
To capture a region, pass a bounding box in (left, top, right, bottom) order:
from PIL import ImageGrab
image = ImageGrab.grab(bbox=(100, 100, 900, 700))
print(image.size)
Coordinates are screen coordinates; choose a box that fits the display and capture environment. The returned image is still just an in-memory object. To paste it, use a clipboard API or library that accepts image data on the target operating system. Clipboard writing is separate from taking the screenshot.
Platform support and Linux behavior
Pillow documents ImageGrab support on Windows and macOS, and Linux support starting with Pillow 7.1.0. Linux capture depends on the display environment. If the default X11 display cannot provide a snapshot, Pillow may invoke gnome-screenshot, grim, or spectacle when installed. Pass xdisplay="" to disable that fallback behavior:
from PIL import ImageGrab
image = ImageGrab.grab(xdisplay="")
That setting disables the fallback; it does not make an unsupported display-server or compositor path work. Check the capture route on the actual X11 or Wayland environment where the program will run. See Pillow’s ImageGrab reference for the documented behavior.

Build an in-memory capture into a Windows app
For a native Windows program that needs frames rather than a one-off user shortcut, Windows.Graphics.Capture provides APIs to acquire frames from a display or application window. Microsoft’s description is that the namespace provides APIs “to acquire frames from a display or application window, to create video streams or snapshots to build collaborative and interactive experiences.” The typical flow is to invoke the secure picker, create a capture frame pool and session, acquire frames, then process a snapshot from the frame data in memory. Microsoft documents support on Windows desktop devices and Windows Mixed Reality immersive headsets in its Windows.Graphics.Capture overview.
This is a development API rather than a universal command-line shortcut: your app must implement the picker and frame-processing flow, and the capture experience is subject to the platform’s secure selection and permission model. Use the Snipping Tool route for an interactive user capture when you do not need to build and manage that pipeline yourself.
Write a screenshot to the browser clipboard
A web app can put generated or captured PNG pixels on the clipboard without first downloading a file. The WebKit Async Clipboard API flow is to obtain a PNG Blob, wrap it in a ClipboardItem, then call navigator.clipboard.write():
async function copyPngBlobToClipboard(blob) {
await navigator.clipboard.write([
new ClipboardItem({ "image/png": blob })
]);
}
For example, if a canvas already contains the pixels you want to copy, convert it to a blob and pass that blob to the function:

const canvas = document.querySelector("canvas");
canvas.toBlob(async (blob) => {
if (!blob) throw new Error("Could not create PNG data");
await copyPngBlobToClipboard(blob);
}, "image/png");
This writes an image that your page has generated or captured; it is not a browser API for silently photographing the user’s screen. Browser permission, secure-context, and user-gesture rules apply, so call the write in response to an appropriate user action and handle rejection. Implementations can sanitize clipboard data. See the WebKit Async Clipboard API documentation.
What “without writing to disk” does and does not mean
- No explicit file write: Your code can avoid calling a save or export function. Pillow’s image object, a Windows capture frame, or clipboard image data can remain in memory instead.
- Memory is still used: A full-resolution image occupies RAM while it is held by your app, the clipboard, or the capture process.
- Clipboard contents are not necessarily ephemeral everywhere: Clipboard managers and synchronization utilities may retain or transmit copied content.
- Persistence requires export: If you need to reopen the image after the program exits, recover it later, or keep an audit artifact, save it deliberately to an appropriate destination.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot appears as a file instead of being ready to paste
On macOS, confirm that Control was held with the Command-Shift shortcut. On Windows, distinguish the Snipping Tool interactive workflow from a request that asks for automatic saving; the auto-save flag is optional. If you are using a browser app, make sure your code writes a PNG Blob to the clipboard rather than triggering a download.
A Windows app never receives the Snipping Tool result
The protocol redirect callback is documented for packaged apps. An unpackaged Win32 app cannot receive the redirect response through this protocol. Use Windows.Graphics.Capture or another appropriate capture path, or package the app if that callback flow is required.
Python capture fails on Linux
Check which display server and compositor the session uses and whether the required capture support is available. Pillow may fall back to gnome-screenshot, grim, or spectacle if the default X11 display cannot provide an image and those tools are installed. If you passed xdisplay="", remember that it disables those fallbacks rather than repairing display support.

Browser clipboard writing is rejected
Check that the page is in a secure context, that the call is permitted by the browser’s permission policy, and that the write occurs within a user-initiated action where required. Handle promise rejection; do not assume that a clipboard write always succeeds.
The screenshot disappears or changes
Clipboard contents can be replaced by another copy operation. If another program needs the screenshot later, pass it directly as an in-memory image where possible or explicitly export it instead of relying on clipboard retention.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a web-page screenshot rather than a capture of your own desktop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API returns a response, so this route is not the same as copying a desktop capture to your local clipboard.
cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The request writes the response to shot.webp because of -o. If your application needs to avoid a local file, omit that output option and consume the response body in memory; the API request itself does not capture your local desktop.
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a screenshot to the clipboard save it permanently?
No. Clipboard content is transient and can be replaced; use an explicit export if you need a durable copy.
Can a browser copy any screenshot directly to the clipboard?
A web page can write image data it has access to, such as a PNG Blob, subject to browser permissions and secure-context rules. That is distinct from taking a screenshot of the user’s entire desktop.
