The procedure below is portable in principle, but cron syntax, shells, service accounts, environment variables, and log locations differ by operating system, so adapt the example to the host that actually runs the job.
Before scheduling: verify the legacy runtime
PhantomJS is no longer an actively developed browser. Its official homepage says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” Treat an existing deployment as legacy infrastructure: test it against the pages you need, pin the binary you have validated, and plan a migration when compatibility or security requirements change.
Confirm the binary and version on the scheduled host

/opt/phantomjs/bin/phantomjs --helpPhantomJS 2.1.1 is the version identified by the official download and command-line documentation. Linux archives require compatible Fontconfig and GLIBC/GLIBCXX libraries. Check those dependencies on the same machine and under the same account that cron will use; a binary that works in your login shell can still fail for a service account.
Do you need X11 or Xvfb?
No. PhantomJS has been pure headless since version 1.5, and the project’s headless-testing guidance says Linux operation does not require a GUI. Installation of the binary and its libraries on the build or worker host is the relevant setup.

Create a script that has a defined outcome
Do not let cron decide whether a screenshot “probably worked.” Make the script validate navigation, log the status, write only successful images, and return a non-zero exit code on failure.

page.open reports the initial navigation outcome. Rendering only in its success branch prevents a blank or partially loaded page from being mistaken for a valid artifact. The timeout callback identifies the individual resource that exceeded resourceTimeout, which is measured in milliseconds. These settings apply during the initial page.open.
Wait for application readiness, not an arbitrary short sleep
A successful HTTP navigation does not prove that client-side content has appeared. For pages that expose a reliable readiness element, poll for it before rendering and enforce a maximum deadline:

});Replace #report-ready with a selector your application sets only after its data is usable. A fixed delay can still be useful for a known animation, but the official quick start warns that load time varies; a small sleep is not a readiness guarantee.

Make cron’s environment explicit
Interactive shells commonly provide a different PATH, home directory, locale, proxy, and current directory than cron. Use an absolute PhantomJS path, an absolute script path, and an absolute output path. Change to a known directory in a wrapper so relative files, cookies, and configuration behave predictably.

Use the account that owns the output directory, and ensure it can execute the binary and read any required certificates or configuration. If the target requires authentication, pass credentials through a protected mechanism supported by your environment rather than placing secrets in a world-readable crontab.

The following is a POSIX-style example, not a universal scheduler definition. Confirm the five-field format, user selection, shell behavior, and logging facility for your operating system or cron implementation.

On systems with a separate scheduler, use its equivalent command and retention policy. Keep enough history to distinguish an executable-path error, missing library, network failure, resource timeout, and page-load failure.

Choose dimensions and output deliberately
Viewport versus captured region
viewportSize controls the browser viewport. clipRect controls the rectangle that is rendered. Set both intentionally for repeatable dimensions; otherwise a responsive page may select a different layout than it does in your interactive test.
Image and PDF formats
PhantomJS can render PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF. Use a filename extension and rendering settings that match the consumer. Verify the resulting file from a scheduled run: check that it exists, has a non-zero size, and can be opened by your downstream system. A successful process alone is not proof that the artifact is useful.
Diagnose failures systematically
“phantomjs: not found” or exit 127
Cron did not find the executable. Replace phantomjs with its absolute path, confirm execute permission, and print the effective PATH in the wrapper if needed.
Shared-library or Fontconfig errors
The host does not satisfy the binary’s Linux dependencies. Run the version command as the cron account, install compatible Fontconfig and GLIBC/GLIBCXX libraries according to your distribution policy, or deploy a binary built for that host. Do not assume a copied archive is self-contained.

page.open is not success
Inspect the logged status, resource errors, proxy or DNS configuration, TLS behavior, and the target’s response. Capture the URL and timestamp, then reproduce with the same account and environment. A non-success result must produce a non-zero job status and no screenshot.
Resource timeout
Increase page.settings.resourceTimeout only when the target’s latency justifies it; record the affected URL from onResourceTimeout. A larger limit can make a stuck job consume the entire schedule interval, so pair it with an operational timeout or scheduler-level runtime limit where available.
Blank or incomplete image
Check that the page’s readiness condition is meaningful, that images and scripts were not still loading, and that the viewport and clip rectangle include the content. Compare a manually run capture and a cron-run capture using the same binary, URL, account, and working directory.
Jobs overlap
If a page can take longer than its interval, two captures may run simultaneously and contend for CPU, memory, output names, or temporary files. Use unique timestamped names and your host’s locking or concurrency control so a new invocation waits or exits when one is already active.

Use PhantomJS diagnostics without weakening security
The CLI supports debug output, proxy settings, image loading controls, SSL-related settings, output configuration, and a JSON configuration file. Start with the least intrusive diagnostic option, retain the command and version in logs, and avoid disabling certificate or other security checks merely to make a capture pass. Remote debugging can help inspect a failing page, but expose that interface only on a controlled network and remove it after diagnosis.
Reliability and maintenance checklist
- Record
phantomjs --versionand the binary checksum when deploying. - Run the exact wrapper manually as the cron account before enabling a schedule.
- Use absolute paths, a fixed working directory, and explicit locale and proxy settings.
- Render only after a successful navigation and an application-specific readiness check.
- Log status, failed resources, output path, duration, and process exit code.
- Keep output and logs under a retention policy so a long-running job cannot fill the disk.
- Monitor missing or stale artifacts, not just process exit codes.
- Re-test after target-site changes, certificate updates, library upgrades, or host migrations.
- Document a migration plan because the runtime is suspended and current web features may outgrow it.

FAQ
Can PhantomJS run headlessly from cron on Linux?
Yes. PhantomJS does not require X11 or Xvfb, but the binary still needs compatible system libraries and a correctly configured runtime account.
Should I render after a fixed delay?
Only when the delay is a deliberate, tested part of the page’s behavior. Prefer a readiness selector or another observable condition with a maximum wait.
What should a failed screenshot job return?
Return a non-zero exit code, log the navigation status or timed-out resource, and do not publish the output as a valid screenshot.
