Network latency is the time data takes to travel between two points. Consumer tests usually show round-trip time (RTT) in milliseconds: a packet travels to a test server and back. To improve a laggy connection, first compare wired and Wi‑Fi results, then compare idle latency with latency while uploading or downloading. Those tests reveal whether the practical bottleneck is wireless interference, queueing (bufferbloat), faulty equipment, or your ISP’s route. A faster plan alone does not remove distance or routing delay.

This guide explains the measurements, a repeatable diagnosis, fixes for home users and website operators, and the limits of each remedy.

Latency, bandwidth and throughput are different

Latency is delay. Bandwidth is the maximum capacity of a link. Throughput is the amount of data actually transferred during a period. A connection can have high bandwidth but still feel delayed when packets must travel a long route or wait in a queue. Cloudflare’s explanation of latency covers these distinctions and why distance matters: What Is Latency?

Round-trip time is not every kind of delay

A speed-test “ping” commonly reports RTT, not the one-way time to a destination. The displayed value depends on the test server, route and moment of measurement. Browser rendering, DNS lookup, TLS negotiation and server processing can add other delays that a basic ping does not measure.

Jitter, packet loss and loaded latency

Jitter is variation in delay; inconsistent timing is especially disruptive to voice, video and games. Packet loss means data must be retransmitted or is never received. Loaded latency is delay while the connection carries traffic. Cloudflare’s Aggregated Internet Measurement (AIM) evaluates latency, loaded latency, jitter, packet loss, download and upload together, rather than treating one ping as a complete diagnosis (Cloudflare AIM documentation).

Why latency increases

Distance and routing

Signals cannot reach a distant server instantly. Every additional network segment and routing decision adds propagation and processing time. Your home settings cannot remove this floor. Tests aimed at different servers are not like-for-like, because the paths may be entirely different.

Queueing and bufferbloat

When packets arrive at a bottleneck faster than the link can transmit them, they wait in a queue. Large queues can preserve throughput while adding noticeable delay; this condition is commonly called bufferbloat. It may occur in a home router, Wi‑Fi link or the ISP’s access network. Bufferbloat.net explains the mechanism and testing approach in its Bufferbloat FAQ.

Wi‑Fi conditions

Distance from the access point, walls, floors, competing networks and household electronics can force retries or lower the wireless rate. A device can therefore show good latency beside the router and poor latency in another room.

ISP and equipment problems

Outages, busy-period congestion, inefficient routing, an old modem, a low-rated Ethernet cable, or a saturated router can all create delay. Google notes that test-server location and time of day affect results; its troubleshooting guidance is available for slow Nest Wifi or Google Wifi internet and speed and connection testing.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming

Measure the problem before changing hardware

  1. Record a baseline. Run the same reputable test several times at similar times. Write down server, wired or wireless connection, latency, loaded latency (if shown), jitter, packet loss, download and upload. A result is a snapshot, not a permanent property of your line.
  2. Keep the comparison fair. Use the same device and test server when comparing changes. A nearby server can look faster simply because the route is shorter.
  3. Test idle and busy states. Note latency with no large transfer, then repeat while a known download and upload are active. A large increase under load points to queueing or congestion.
  4. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet. Connect the device directly to the router with a suitable cable and run the same test. If wired results are steadier, investigate the wireless path before blaming the ISP.
  5. Check several destinations. A single remote service may have its own congestion. Consistent results across multiple destinations are stronger evidence of a local or provider issue.

How to reduce latency, in the order that usually works

1. Establish a wired reference

Use Ethernet from the device to the router, bypassing the radio link. This does not shorten the route to a distant server, but it removes many variables: signal strength, interference and retransmissions. For services above 100 Mbps, Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6; verify that both cable and ports support the rate your devices use (Google’s troubleshooting guidance). Replacing a cable is justified when the existing one or port negotiates an unexpectedly low link speed, not as a universal latency cure.

2. Improve Wi‑Fi placement and radio conditions

  • Move the client closer to the router and retest.
  • Place the router or mesh point in an open, central position rather than inside furniture or behind large obstructions.
  • Separate it from likely sources of interference and check whether nearby networks are competing for airtime.
  • Use Ethernet for stationary, latency-sensitive devices when practical.

Restarting equipment can clear a temporary fault, but it cannot add capacity or change a long route. Google’s placement and performance checklist includes additional Wi‑Fi measures (Test and improve your connection; Improve Nest Wifi performance).

3. Control queueing with smart queue management

If latency is acceptable when idle but jumps during uploads or downloads, look for a router feature called smart queue management (SQM) or an equivalent active queue-management mode. It deliberately manages the bottleneck queue so packets do not sit indefinitely. The router must have enough processing capacity for your actual service speed, and configuration is hardware-specific; do not copy arbitrary tuning numbers from another model. Re-run the idle-versus-loaded test after each change.

4. Check every link and device limit

Inspect the negotiated Ethernet speed, router and switch ports, modem capabilities, duplex settings and client hardware. An old 100-Mbps port or damaged cable can constrain throughput and create contention even when the subscription is faster. Confirm firmware is current and that no device is continuously uploading backups, video or peer-to-peer traffic during your test.

5. Escalate a good wired path to the ISP

If a directly wired device still has high or unstable latency across destinations, collect your dated results and contact the provider. Ask about outages, local congestion, routing and service limits. Changing to a higher advertised bandwidth tier is not automatically a latency fix; consider a different plan or provider only after establishing that the problem is provider-side and checking local availability.

Choose the fix that matches the evidence

Option Use it when What it can address What it cannot address
Ethernet cable Wi‑Fi is worse than wired, or the existing link negotiates too slowly Wireless variability and unsuitable local cabling Remote distance, ISP routing or upstream congestion
Router with SQM Latency rises sharply under load and the router is the bottleneck Added queueing delay at a managed bottleneck Weak Wi‑Fi, an ISP fault, long-distance propagation or insufficient router capacity
Router placement or Wi‑Fi adjustment Wired results are better, signal is weak or interference is plausible Local radio conditions A poor wired path or remote server delay
ISP troubleshooting or provider comparison Good wired tests remain poor or outages and routing issues persist Provider congestion, outages, service limits and routes Problems inside your home; availability varies by location
CDN (for website operators) You deliver a site to users in multiple regions Caches content closer to visitors, reducing content travel distance A home user’s latency to unrelated services

What latency means for common activities

Online games

Games are sensitive to RTT, jitter and loss, not download speed alone. Ethernet can remove local radio variability; SQM can help when another household activity saturates the connection. A distant game server still imposes a path-dependent floor.

Voice and video calls

Stable delay and low jitter matter more than a peak bandwidth figure. Test while other devices upload, because upstream queueing can make speech arrive in bursts or cause freezes.

Streaming and downloads

Once a stream has buffered, throughput is often the limiting factor. Latency still affects startup, interactive controls and competing traffic. More bandwidth may reduce queue buildup only if the previous link was saturated; it does not erase propagation delay.

Web browsing and work

Pages with many requests feel slower when each request waits on a high-latency path. A CDN can help a site owner serve static assets nearer to visitors, while a consumer should first diagnose local Wi‑Fi and ISP routing.

Common fixes that are often misapplied

  • Buying more bandwidth: useful for sustained transfers that saturate your link, but not a guaranteed latency reduction.
  • Changing DNS: may alter lookup time or route selection in limited cases; it does not speed every packet after the lookup.
  • Using a VPN: can improve a particular route, but it can also add an extra hop. Treat it as a controlled experiment, not a default cure.
  • Buying a “gaming” router: branding is not evidence. Check measured SQM capability, supported throughput and compatibility with your service.
  • PC cleanup software: it cannot repair radio interference, router queues, network routes or ISP congestion.

Or skip the browser setup

If your work involves collecting page screenshots while diagnosing web performance, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It is not a lower-latency network service, but it can automate repeatable captures without maintaining a browser.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Latency is high only on Wi‑Fi

Repeat the Ethernet comparison at the same location. If wired is stable, move the router or client, reduce obstructions and interference, and use a wired connection for fixed devices. A mesh point may help coverage, but placement still determines its radio backhaul quality.

Latency is fine idle and terrible during uploads

Stop background transfers to confirm the relationship, then enable SQM if the router supports it. Verify that the router can process your service rate. If the increase remains on a wired device, provide loaded and idle results to the ISP.

Only one game or website is slow

Test another destination and check the service’s region or server selection. A single route or remote service can be congested while the rest of your connection is healthy.

Results vary from test to test

Record server, time, connection type and active traffic. Different servers, busy periods and background use produce different snapshots. Compare repeated tests under matching conditions before replacing hardware.

Every wired test is poor

Check modem status, cable and port negotiation, then test another device. If several wired devices show the same issue, ask the ISP about an outage, congestion, routing or service limitation and provide your measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 20 ms or 50 ms the “good” latency number?

There is no universal threshold established for every service and route. Judge latency together with destination, jitter, packet loss and whether it rises under load; compare the same path over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does restarting my router permanently lower latency?

A restart can clear a temporary fault, but it cannot remove distance, add link capacity or correct persistent ISP routing. If the symptom returns, continue with wired, loaded-latency and equipment tests.

Can a CDN lower my gaming or home-internet ping?

No. A CDN can place a website’s cached content nearer to its visitors. It does not change your route to a game server or unrelated internet destination.
