Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →On a desktop, the most reliable built-in way to save a web page as a PDF is to open the browser’s Print dialog, choose its PDF destination, inspect the preview, and adjust settings before saving. This preserves the page as the browser’s print layout—not necessarily as an exact copy of what you see on screen. If the website’s print rules hide or rearrange content, no single setting can guarantee a perfect match.
Convert a web page to PDF: the basic workflow
- Open the page on a desktop browser. Wait until the text, images, or other content you need has appeared. Interactive or delayed content may not be included just because you print the page.
- Open Print. In Chrome, choose File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux and Command+P on Mac. In Edge, use Settings and more > Print or the same keyboard shortcuts for Windows and macOS, respectively. Firefox also has a Print command in its browser menu.
- Select a PDF destination. Choose Save as PDF in Chrome, Save to PDF in Firefox, or the PDF destination offered by your system in Edge. Do not choose a physical printer if you want a file.
- Check the preview before saving. Review every page for clipped text, awkward page breaks, missing images or backgrounds, and unwanted browser headers or footers.
- Adjust the setting that matches the problem. For example, try landscape for a wide table, reduce scale if content is clipped, or enable print backgrounds if colors or background images are missing. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Save and reopen the PDF. Confirm that the pages, text, and important images are present in the saved file.
These steps are for desktop Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Labels and available controls can vary by browser version and operating system.
Why a PDF may not look like the screen
A browser’s print command creates a print rendering. It does not simply take a screenshot of the visible page. Websites can use separate print styles that change colors, hide navigation, rearrange columns, or omit elements. Mozilla’s Firefox guidance cautions that web pages may be set up to look different on paper than on screen; Chrome for Developers also describes CSS rules that apply when pages are printed, including to PDF.
That is why the preview matters more than a particular “best” setting. If an element is absent because the website’s print layout hides it, shrinking the page or changing margins may not bring it back. Try a reader-friendly view if available, or capture the page visually instead of relying on print layout.

Which print settings help fix formatting?
| Problem | Setting to inspect | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Wide text, tables, or columns are cut off | Orientation and scale | Try landscape for content that is wider than the paper. Reduce the scale or choose fit-to-printable-area where offered; this can make text smaller. |
| Content feels too small or crowded | Paper size, margins, and scale | Check these together. Narrower margins can create more usable space; increasing scale may improve readability but risks clipping. |
| Colors or background images are missing | Print backgrounds | Enable background printing if the browser provides that option. A site’s print rules may still suppress or change backgrounds. |
| Ads, menus, or sidebars take over the PDF | Simplified format or reader mode | Firefox offers Original and Simplified formats; Edge’s Immersive Reader can provide a cleaner route on supported sites. These modes may change the layout. |
| Unwanted date, title, or page numbers appear | Headers and footers | Turn off headers and footers where available. If page numbers are useful, leave them on and check their placement in preview. |
Firefox documents controls for paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, Original or Simplified format, two-sided printing, headers and footers, and print backgrounds. Simplified format disables print backgrounds. Edge documents Actual size, Fit to printable area, and Custom scaling, plus margins and headers and footers. The exact controls depend on the browser and page.
Browser-specific steps
Chrome on desktop
Open the page, choose File > Print or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on Mac. Choose Save as PDF as the destination, inspect the preview, adjust the available print options, and save. Saving to Google Drive is also possible if you have an appropriate extension or Drive for desktop, but it is not required to make a local PDF.
For developers who control the page, print-specific CSS can deliberately alter the output. Chrome 131 added support for CSS content in page margins, according to a Chrome for Developers article published October 30, 2024. That is a version-specific developer capability, not a setting a reader needs to enable in the Print dialog.
Firefox
Open Print, select Save to PDF in the destination dropdown, then review More settings and the preview before saving. Try Simplified if the page’s navigation and other surrounding elements make the PDF difficult to read; use Original when retaining the page presentation matters more. If colors or background images disappear, check whether print backgrounds are enabled. Simplified format does not allow print backgrounds.

Mozilla also mentions Print Edit WE as an extension option for editing page content before printing. It is an optional route if you need to remove or change elements; it is not required for ordinary print-to-PDF conversion.
Microsoft Edge
Open the page and choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. Inspect the preview and use scaling options such as Fit to printable area, Actual size, or Custom where offered. Check margins and headers or footers before saving the PDF.
On websites where it is available, Edge’s Immersive Reader can reduce page clutter before printing. Microsoft notes that Immersive Reader may not be available for all websites. Since the reader view can change the presentation, check that the content you want is still present in the preview.
When browser print is not enough
If the print preview still omits or rearranges an important element, first consider whether the page has finished loading and whether a reader-friendly mode improves the result. A page may use print CSS that hides content, and support for paged-media behavior can vary across browsers and versions. There is no universal browser control that restores every site’s screen layout.

If matching the visual appearance matters more than selectable text or print layout, a screenshot is a different kind of output. For a single long page, a screenshot tool with full-page capture may be more suitable than a browser’s print rendering. That changes the trade-off: a PDF made through print can preserve text as text, while a screenshot-based PDF represents the page visually.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can return a clean screenshot or PDF from a URL. Its capture process accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a screenshot response, the following cURL request saves an image file. The API also supports PDF output; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and output details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
With Python:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
With Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo is useful when you want the capture handled by an API rather than configuring a browser workflow: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Common problems and fixes
Text or columns are cut off
Return to preview and test landscape orientation or a smaller custom scale. If Edge offers Fit to printable area, compare it with Actual size. A smaller scale may fit a wide layout but make the text harder to read, so inspect the full document before saving.
The pages look cramped or the text is too small
Do not repeatedly shrink the scale without checking paper size and margins. A different paper size or narrower margins may give the content more room. Review the page breaks after each adjustment; fitting the content onto fewer pages can reduce legibility.

Background colors or images are missing
Look for a print-background option, particularly in Firefox. If you selected Simplified format in Firefox, switch to Original to make print backgrounds available. A site may still use print styling that changes or omits its background.
Ads and navigation overwhelm the article
Try Firefox Simplified format or Edge Immersive Reader if the site supports it. Compare the preview with the original page because reader modes can change the presentation or exclude elements.

Headers or footers are unwanted—or missing
Use the browser’s headers-and-footers control where available. Turn it off to remove added text; leave it on if you want the browser’s date or page numbering, then verify that it does not overlap page content.
Content is still missing after adjusting settings
Check that the content appeared on the page before opening Print. If it did, but does not appear in the preview, the page’s print styles may hide or transform it. Try a reader mode or edit the page before printing; if preserving the on-screen appearance is essential, use a visual capture workflow instead.

FAQ
Does converting a web page to PDF preserve selectable text?
Browser print-to-PDF generally creates a print rendering rather than a flat screenshot, but the result depends on the page and browser. Check the saved file by selecting or searching for text if that matters for your use.
Can I save only part of a web page?
Edge documents printing selected page content. Select the content first if the browser and page support that workflow, then check the preview to make sure the selection is what will be saved.
Do the same steps apply to phones and Safari?
The steps here cover desktop Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Mobile and Safari menus are not established by these instructions, and their controls may differ.
