For the quickest full-screen screenshot in Windows 10, press PrtScn to copy the entire screen to the clipboard, then press Ctrl+V in Paint, a document, an email, or another app that accepts images. If you want Windows to save an image file immediately, press Windows logo key + PrtScn; Windows places it in Pictures > Screenshots. These shortcuts are documented by Microsoft, although key names and behavior can vary by keyboard.
Use Snipping Tool when you want a guided full-screen capture, editing, or a different capture mode. The steps below cover each outcome, where the result goes, what to do when your keyboard has no Print Screen key, and how to troubleshoot failures.
Choose the method that matches your result
| What you need | Use this Windows 10 method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Copy the whole desktop and paste it somewhere | PrtScn | Full screen is placed on the clipboard |
| Save a full-screen image without opening another app | Windows logo key + PrtScn | Windows saves an image in Pictures > Screenshots |
| Choose a capture mode, edit, and then save | Snipping Tool or Windows logo key + Shift + S | A snip is copied to the clipboard; a notification can open the editor |
| Your keyboard has no Print Screen key | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | A hardware-dependent screenshot shortcut documented by Microsoft |
The key may be printed as PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; this guide focuses on the Windows 10 workflow.
Method 1: Copy the entire screen with PrtScn
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it captured.
- Press PrtScn (also shown as PrtSc or PrntScrn).
- Open the destination app. Paint, a word processor, an email composer, and other image-capable applications can accept the capture.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the full-screen image.
PrtScn is a clipboard operation. Pressing it does not, by itself, describe a direct file-save location. To make a file, paste the image into an app such as Paint and use that app’s normal save command.

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
Method 2: Save a full-screen image directly
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn at the same time.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or share the saved image from that folder using the usual Windows file commands.
This is the simplest choice when the requirement is a saved file rather than a clipboard image. Microsoft notes that the shortcut can depend on the computer’s keyboard hardware. If the key combination does nothing, use Snipping Tool or the hardware alternative described below.
Method 3: Use Snipping Tool in Full screen mode
Snipping Tool provides a graphical route when you want to choose a capture mode or make edits before saving.
- Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it.
- Choose the Full screen capture mode.
- Take the capture. Windows copies the snip to the clipboard.
- When the notification appears, select it to open the capture in the editor.
- Make any permitted changes in the editor and save the result from there.
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool’s full-screen mode and the notification-to-editor workflow in its Snipping Tool support guide. This route is useful when you need an editable capture instead of an immediate one-key save.
Start the snipping overlay with Windows logo key + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the snipping overlay opens, choose the full-screen capture option rather than a smaller selection.
- Complete the capture. The image is copied to the clipboard.
- Select the notification if you want to open the image in Snipping Tool’s editor, then save it from the editor.
This shortcut is convenient when you want to select a mode without first opening the app from Start. It is not the direct-save shortcut; the initial result is a clipboard snip.

If your keyboard has no PrtScn key
Some compact keyboards and laptops do not provide a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible screenshot shortcut for such hardware. It is device-dependent, so it may not work on every model.
- Look for a secondary symbol on the Space Bar or another key and hold Fn while using the Windows logo key combination.
- If that shortcut is unavailable, open Snipping Tool from Start and select Full screen.
- For a file saved automatically, try Windows logo key + PrtScn only if your keyboard exposes a Print Screen function; otherwise use the graphical method.
Do not assume every keyboard uses the same label: Microsoft lists PrtSc, PrtScn, and PrntScrn as common variations.
Where your Windows 10 screenshot goes
After pressing PrtScn
The entire screen is on the clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V into an application that accepts images. There is no direct file location associated with the PrtScn press alone.
After pressing Windows logo key + PrtScn
Look in Pictures > Screenshots. This is Microsoft’s documented save location for the direct-save shortcut.

After using Snipping Tool or Windows logo key + Shift + S
The capture is copied to the clipboard. A notification can open it in the editor, where you can make changes and save it. If you only need to paste it into another program, use Ctrl+V instead of opening the editor.
Troubleshooting full-screen captures
Nothing appears after pressing PrtScn
That is normally expected: PrtScn copies the image rather than opening a window or displaying a confirmation. Open Paint, an email, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V. If the paste is empty, try the key again and confirm that you are using the key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
Windows logo key + PrtScn does not create a file
The direct-save shortcut can depend on hardware. Check Pictures > Screenshots first, then use Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode. On a keyboard without a dedicated Print Screen key, try the documented Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar combination.
Windows logo key + Shift + S does not open the overlay
Use Start search to open Snipping Tool directly and select Full screen. The graphical workflow avoids relying on the overlay shortcut being available on your particular keyboard or setup.

The notification disappeared before you clicked it
The snip is still intended for clipboard use, so open the destination app and press Ctrl+V. For a saved, editable copy, take the capture again and select the notification promptly to open the editor.
An application does not allow the capture
The cited Windows guidance covers ordinary desktop screenshots; it does not establish that protected content or every application will permit capture. Follow the application’s rules and use only content you are authorized to record.
A practical workflow for dependable results
- Decide whether you need a clipboard image or a file before choosing a shortcut.
- Use PrtScn when another app will receive the image immediately.
- Use Windows logo key + PrtScn when you want Windows to save the image in Pictures > Screenshots.
- Use Snipping Tool when editing or a guided full-screen selection matters.
- If a shortcut fails, switch to the Start-menu Snipping Tool workflow rather than installing a separate utility.
These built-in Windows methods require no paid screenshot software or special accessory. The main variables are the keyboard’s available keys and whether the application being captured permits screenshots.
