There is no documented wkhtmltopdf switch for folding marks. For marks that fit in the repeated header or footer area, create a small HTML file and pass it with --header-html or --footer-html. If the marks must sit at exact fold positions elsewhere on each sheet, the header/footer method alone does not guarantee that placement; you will need to put marks into each page’s content and verify the result with your installed wkhtmltopdf build.
What wkhtmltopdf can repeat
wkhtmltopdf documents HTML headers and footers that can be applied to pages. Its command-line manual describes --header-html and --footer-html, as well as page margins and header/footer spacing. These are the appropriate documented starting points for authored marks that belong in the header or footer region.
There is no documented native folding-mark or crop-mark option. Treat any marks you draw as ordinary HTML content, not as a built-in print feature. In particular, do not assume that a CSS paged-media declaration for crop marks works in wkhtmltopdf: the fact that a CSS specification discusses such marks does not establish support in wkhtmltopdf’s Qt WebKit rendering engine.
First decide where the marks need to land. Short marks at the top or bottom edge may fit in a header or footer. A mark that must appear at a specific point down the page—such as a fold line at one-third of the sheet’s height—may not fit in that repeated region. For those positions, add the mark as part of each page’s generated content or use another verified PDF workflow. The available documentation does not establish a universal way to inject arbitrary marks into every page’s main-content area.

Make a repeated header or footer for marks
Create a standalone HTML file containing only the marks intended for the header or footer band. Use simple elements with explicit dimensions rather than relying on browser print defaults. This example draws two short horizontal lines near the left and right edges of the usable header area:
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
html, body { margin: 0; padding: 0; }
.marks {
width: 100%;
height: 8mm;
position: relative;
}
.mark {
position: absolute;
top: 3mm;
width: 10mm;
border-top: 0.25mm solid #000;
}
.left { left: 0; }
.right { right: 0; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="marks">
<span class="mark left"></span>
<span class="mark right"></span>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Save this as marks.html. The dimensions are example design values, not required wkhtmltopdf settings. Adjust their length, thickness, color, and position for the paper and folding method you intend to use. These particular lines appear in the header band; they are not a recipe for positioning a mark at an arbitrary point along the page edge.

Render the document with the header on each page
Use the same wkhtmltopdf executable and build that will be used in production. For example:
wkhtmltopdf --margin-top 15mm --header-spacing 2
--header-html marks.html input.html output.pdf
This is an illustrative command, not a tested configuration for every build or document. Replace the filenames and set margins and spacing for your page size and content. The top margin reserves room for the header; header spacing controls the gap between that region and the body. Too much header spacing can put the header outside the PDF page, so increasing spacing is not a substitute for checking the layout.

To put marks at the bottom instead, use a footer document and the corresponding footer options, for example --footer-html footer-marks.html, while allowing sufficient bottom margin. Do not combine header and footer settings blindly: both consume page layout space, and body content can overlap or be pushed if the geometry is unsuitable.
- Choose the paper size and orientation. Use the page dimensions that match the intended PDF and print workflow. The mark positions are meaningful only relative to that geometry.
- Reserve header or footer space. Set the corresponding page margin and spacing so the repeated HTML remains inside the PDF page box and clear of the document body.
- Render more than one page. Use a representative document with the same wkhtmltopdf binary, options, and input characteristics as production.
- Inspect every page. Check position, visibility, clipping, overlap with body content, and consistency from first page to last.
- Check the print path. Open the generated PDF in the intended viewer and, where relevant, verify a physical or downstream print output. Do not assume a mark outside the PDF page box will survive later processing.
When fold marks must be at exact page positions
A repeated header or footer is convenient because it centralizes the mark layout, but it only solves the placement problem when the needed marks can be rendered in that area. If a fold position is measured from the top or bottom of the full sheet, it may fall in the body region rather than the header/footer region. A header/footer example should not be treated as proof that wkhtmltopdf can overlay a mark at that coordinate on every page.

For exact positions, the practical alternative is to have the document-generation step that creates each page also emit the marks at the intended coordinates. This can be more work when page breaks are dynamic, because the marks must track the actual page layout rather than a single source-document position. The available wkhtmltopdf documentation does not give a universal main-content recipe for that case. Build a representative multi-page file and verify the actual output before relying on it.
A user report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.4 described a main-document element styled with position: fixed and bottom: 0 appearing only on the last page. That report is anecdotal and does not establish identical behavior for every version or build, but it is a reason not to assume that fixed-position HTML will repeat like a header/footer. Similarly, a separate report described difficulty placing an HTML header above the specified top margin. Treat page geometry as part of the implementation, not as an independently adjustable overlay.

Page numbers and other header features
wkhtmltopdf’s documented header/footer mechanisms include text settings and substitutions such as [page], [frompage], and [topage]. Static folding marks do not need these substitutions. If you add page text alongside marks, test that it does not collide with them at the final page size and margin settings.
Troubleshoot missing, clipped, or misplaced marks
- Marks appear only on the first or last page: Check whether they are in the main document rather than the repeated header/footer file. Do not count on
position: fixedto repeat consistently; test the specific binary and use the documented header/footer mechanism where its placement is suitable. - No marks appear: Confirm the command points to the correct HTML file and that the invocation includes
--header-htmlor--footer-html. Check that the HTML actually contains visible elements and that their dimensions and colors are not zero or indistinguishable from the page. - Marks are cut off at the top or bottom: Reduce excessive header/footer spacing, adjust the corresponding page margin, and keep marks within the PDF page box. A header spacing value that is too large can put the header outside the document.
- Marks overlap the body: Increase the relevant margin or reduce the header/footer content height and spacing. Render again and inspect both the mark and the first or last body content.
- Marks are in the wrong place on the sheet: Confirm whether the desired position is actually reachable from the header/footer area. If it is a fold point in the page body, use page-specific content placement or a verified alternative rather than assuming header HTML spans the whole page.
- Browser preview differs from the PDF: Judge the generated PDF, not a modern browser’s print preview. wkhtmltopdf uses Qt WebKit, and behavior from current browser print engines should not be presumed equivalent.
- PDF looks right but printed marks disappear: Verify the PDF page box and the printer or downstream production settings. Whether marks can extend into bleed cannot be answered generically; it depends on the installed build and print workflow.

ScreenshotNeo captures website pages; it does not generate a wkhtmltopdf PDF or add folding marks to one. If your adjacent task is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF without configuring a browser, its one-request API is an option. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and setup.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Cost, repeatability, and production checks
The HTML-header approach avoids manually adding the same header-band marks to each source page, but it does not remove the need to validate the rendered file. Keep a known multi-page test input and compare output after changes to wkhtmltopdf version, page size, margins, header/footer files, or content that can alter page breaks. For workflows where fold placement must be exact, record the intended coordinates and verify them in the actual PDF and output device rather than inferring accuracy from a single-page preview.
The wkhtmltopdf usage manual identifies itself as version 0.12.6 with patched Qt; behavior can differ by installed version and build. The issue reports cited above concern particular historical setups, not all installations. For reliable results, make the target binary and downstream print path part of the test.
