“JPG preview” can mean three different things in Windows: thumbnails in a File Explorer folder, the Preview pane for a selected file, or opening the image in Microsoft Photos. Identify the missing behavior first. A folder full of generic icons needs different checks from a blank Preview pane, and neither necessarily means that a JPEG codec is missing.
Identify which JPG preview is missing

The same JPG can display a thumbnail while the Preview pane is disabled, or open in Photos while Explorer still shows generic icons. Work through the branch that matches your symptom.
Fix missing thumbnails in File Explorer
1. Choose an icon view large enough for thumbnails
- Open the affected folder in File Explorer.
- Open the View menu (the exact layout differs between Windows 10 and Windows 11).
- Select Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons. Details, List, and very small icon views may not show useful image previews.
Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance documents changing how items appear with the View controls. If thumbnails appear after increasing the icon size, no file repair was required.
2. Make sure Explorer is not configured to show icons only
- In File Explorer, open Folder Options. In Windows 11, select the three-dot See more menu, then Options; Windows 10 commonly exposes View > Options.
- Open the View tab.
- Look for Always show icons, never thumbnails. If it is selected, clear it and apply the change.
- Return to the folder and select a medium or larger icon view.
Wording and placement can vary by Windows release. If the setting is already clear, continue rather than changing unrelated advanced options.

3. Compare scope before escalating
- Test a known-good JPG in a different local folder.
- Check whether every JPG is affected or only one directory.
- Note whether the files are local, OneDrive placeholders, or downloaded from the internet.
A single affected file points toward that file’s name, contents, or storage state. A problem in every folder points toward Explorer’s view configuration or a Windows-level issue.
OneDrive files: download them before judging thumbnails
OneDrive has an additional storage state: a file can be visible in Explorer without its full contents being stored locally. Microsoft recommends using a medium-sized or larger icon view for OneDrive pictures. If thumbnails still do not appear, make the file local:
- Right-click the JPG in the OneDrive folder.
- Choose Always keep on this device.
- Wait for OneDrive to finish downloading and syncing the file.
- Reopen or refresh the folder in a medium or larger icon view.
Microsoft says OneDrive does not provide previews or thumbnails for images larger than 100 MB. That limit is specific to OneDrive’s preview behavior; it is not a universal Windows JPG limit. A file above that size may still open normally when downloaded.

Check whether Microsoft Photos can open the JPG
JPEG is a supported photo format in Microsoft Photos. Open one affected file with Photos, or use Open with > Photos.

If Photos opens the image
The file is readable by a Microsoft-supported image application. Return to Explorer’s icon-size and thumbnail-setting checks, then check OneDrive availability if applicable. Do not install a broad codec pack simply because thumbnails are absent; the supported JPEG format does not establish a missing-codec problem.
If Photos cannot open the image
- Confirm that the extension is really
.jpgor.jpeg, rather than a renamed file with another format. - Try a different known-good JPG. If it opens, the original may be incomplete or damaged.
- Check the file size and copy it to a local folder if it currently lives on removable or cloud-only storage.
- Do not assume that renaming a non-JPEG file to
.jpgconverts it; an extension changes the label, not the image encoding.
The Microsoft material for this issue does not define one guaranteed repair sequence for a corrupt image. Preserve the original and obtain a fresh copy from the camera, application, backup, or sender when possible.

Why the Preview pane may be blank after an internet download
Folder thumbnails and the Preview pane are separate features. Microsoft states that, beginning with Windows security updates released on and after October 14, 2025, File Explorer automatically disables the Preview pane for files downloaded from the internet. The change mitigates an NTLM hash-leakage risk that can be triggered when a previewed file contains certain HTML references to external paths.
This is an intentional safety behavior, not evidence that every JPG is broken. It applies to the Preview pane and should not be offered as a general explanation for missing folder thumbnails.
Use caution with downloaded files
- Verify where the file came from and whether you expected it.
- Keep the file blocked if its origin or contents are uncertain.
- Do not indiscriminately bypass Windows protections merely to obtain a preview.
If you trust the source and need to work with the file, use the file’s security properties and your organization’s policy to decide whether unblocking is appropriate. The exact warning and controls can differ by Windows version and update state.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences
These checks apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but menu labels and locations differ. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025; an unsupported installation may not receive current security fixes or interface updates. Record the Windows edition and build when reporting the problem, especially if instructions do not match what appears on screen.
Use the symptom, storage, and provenance to narrow the cause

Troubleshooting when the first checks fail
All folders show generic icons
- Recheck the icon size and Always show icons, never thumbnails setting.
- Test a local, known-good JPG outside OneDrive.
- Record whether Photos opens that test file.
- Note the Windows version and build before seeking support.
Only OneDrive pictures fail
- Use Always keep on this device and wait for the sync to finish.
- Use medium or larger icons.
- Check whether the image exceeds OneDrive’s 100 MB preview limit.
Only downloaded files have a blank Preview pane
Treat this as the documented security behavior first. Verify the source and trustworthiness; do not confuse it with a thumbnail setting.
One JPG fails everywhere
Compare it with a known-good image, confirm the extension, inspect its size, and obtain a fresh copy if possible. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal registry edit or thumbnail-cache deletion that is guaranteed for every Windows release, so avoid presenting those operations as a certain cure.

What to collect before asking for help
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- The exact symptom: folder thumbnails, Preview pane, Photos, or more than one.
- Whether the file is local, OneDrive-only, removable-media, or downloaded.
- Whether the issue affects one JPG, one folder, or every folder.

Does installing a codec pack normally fix missing JPG thumbnails?
Not usually. JPEG is supported by Microsoft Photos, so first check Explorer’s icon and thumbnail settings, OneDrive availability, and whether the file itself opens.
Why can I see a JPG filename but no OneDrive thumbnail?
