Use wkhtmltoimage to capture a FusionCharts page by waiting for FusionCharts’ renderComplete event before the screenshot starts. The practical approach is to set a unique window.status value from that callback and pass the value to --window-status. Because support can vary by binary build, verify the wait option locally; if it does not work, use a measured --javascript-delay and check the output. This is a compatibility approach, not a guarantee for every chart type or installation.

Why timing matters

wkhtmltoimage renders HTML through Qt WebKit, which documents support for SVG and JavaScript. FusionCharts draws charts with JavaScript using SVG and VML, so the technologies are plausibly compatible, but that alone does not ensure every chart or modern page feature will render correctly. See the wkhtmltopdf project and Qt WebKit documentation.

A chart may appear only after its library scripts and data have loaded and drawing has finished. Capturing at ordinary page-load completion can therefore produce a blank chart or an incomplete frame. FusionCharts provides the renderComplete event as the chart-readiness signal; wkhtmltoimage’s manual documents JavaScript execution, a delay, injected scripts, and waiting for a window status value as rendering controls (Debian Bookworm wkhtmltoimage manual).

Prepare the page and signal chart readiness

Use the same page, scripts, data sources, fonts, and chart configuration that you intend to capture. Add a callback that sets a distinctive status only after the chart finishes rendering. For example, adapt the following lifecycle pattern to the chart construction code and FusionCharts version used by your page:

const chart = new FusionCharts({
  type: 'column2d',
  renderAt: 'chart-container',
  width: '800',
  height: '500',
  dataSource: {
    chart: { caption: 'Example', theme: 'fusion' },
    data: [
      { label: 'A', value: '12' },
      { label: 'B', value: '19' }
    ]
  },
  events: {
    renderComplete: function () {
      window.status = 'fusioncharts-ready';
    }
  }
});
chart.render();

This is a minimal illustration of the event-to-status pattern, not a substitute for the page’s actual FusionCharts setup. Put the callback in the chart configuration that your installed FusionCharts version supports, and ensure the status marker is not set by unrelated scripts. The export guide describes chart rendering and export lifecycle behavior: FusionCharts JavaScript export guide.

Capture with wkhtmltoimage

  1. Check the installed executable. Run wkhtmltoimage --version and wkhtmltoimage --extended-help (if available) to identify the binary and inspect its supported options. Package documentation and installed builds can differ.
  2. Make the target page reachable. Confirm the executable can load the page and that its scripts, chart data endpoints, fonts, and other required assets are accessible in the capture environment.
  3. Run the capture and wait for the callback marker. Replace the URL and output path with your own values:
    wkhtmltoimage --enable-javascript --window-status fusioncharts-ready --width 1200 --height 900 https://example.com/chart-page shot.png
  4. Inspect the output. Verify that the chart is fully drawn, labels are legible, and the selected viewport includes the whole chart. Adjust width and height or use a page layout that fits the content.

The wkhtmltoimage manual lists JavaScript as enabled by default, but making it explicit can make the command’s intent clear. The example uses PNG; use an output extension supported by your build if you need another image format. --window-status is useful only if the installed executable honors it and the page sets the exact requested value.

If status waiting does not work

Use a deliberate delay as a fallback, then inspect the image and adjust the delay for the actual page and environment:

wkhtmltoimage --enable-javascript --javascript-delay 5000 --width 1200 --height 900 https://example.com/chart-page shot.png

The 5000 value is an example starting point, not a guaranteed wait time. Network latency, data loading, animations, and machine load can change when a chart becomes ready. A fixed delay can waste time on fast loads or still be too short on slow ones. The manual also documents script injection controls, which may help adapt a page when you cannot change its source, but the right injected code depends on the page and build.

A historical 2015 report concerned wait-option behavior in wkhtmltoimage 0.12.2 binaries and described a fix associated with milestone 0.12.2.1. It is not evidence of a current universal defect; it is a reason to test the actual binary rather than assume the option works everywhere (wkhtmltopdf issue #2142).

Choose the right capture scope and output size

For a screenshot of the complete page, set a viewport wide and tall enough to include the chart and any surrounding content. If you need only a chart crop, use a page that positions the chart cleanly or crop the resulting image with a separate image tool. The documented material does not establish a universal FusionCharts-to-wkhtmltoimage element-capture workflow, so exact cropping depends on your page and downstream process.

Test the chart type and real data rather than relying solely on a small demo. Pay particular attention to remote assets, custom fonts, asynchronous data, animations, and other code that may run after the chart’s completion event. Chart readiness does not necessarily mean every unrelated page element has also finished its own asynchronous work.

When FusionCharts’ native export is a better fit

If the deliverable is the chart itself rather than a screenshot of the surrounding web page, compare wkhtmltoimage with FusionCharts’ export feature. FusionCharts documents PNG and JPG image export, as well as SVG and PDF in its export guide. The guide describes setting the chart-level exportEnabled attribute to 1 to expose an export menu. Its API also documents programmatic exportChart; the method is available after the chart’s loaded event, and export begins only after renderComplete (FusionCharts API methods).

The export documentation describes client-side, server-side, and automatic modes. Client-side export converts chart SVG in the browser; server-side export sends chart data to an export service for conversion. The documentation says an active internet connection is required for the described export feature. Confirm current behavior and configuration against the documentation for your installed version, and assess data-handling and network implications before selecting a server-side route.

Troubleshooting blank, partial, or incorrect captures

The chart is blank

  • Check that JavaScript is enabled and that the executable can load the FusionCharts library and chart data.
  • Confirm the callback runs and sets the exact status requested by --window-status.
  • If status waiting appears unsupported, test a fixed delay and inspect whether the chart eventually renders.
  • Check the page in the same network environment for blocked scripts, inaccessible endpoints, or missing assets.

The chart is cut off or text is hard to read

  • Increase the output viewport width or height to match the intended layout.
  • Check responsive breakpoints: a page rendered at a different width may reflow the chart or labels.
  • Try the exact chart dimensions and data used in production; long labels or larger datasets can change the layout.

Some fonts, images, or page elements are missing

  • Verify that those resources are reachable from the capture process and are not loaded only after the chart callback.
  • If unrelated content is asynchronous, wait for an additional page-level readiness condition or use a delay that has been checked against that content.
  • Test custom fonts and remote resources separately; the cited documentation does not provide a compatibility matrix for every asset or chart feature.

The wait flag behaves differently across installations

Record the executable version and test the exact option in the environment where the capture will run. A documented option does not prove that every packaged build implements it identically. The historical issue #2142 concerns a 2015 report and should not be generalized to all current installations.

If maintaining a Qt WebKit capture environment is unnecessary for your use case, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/chart-page -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. ScreenshotNeo’s clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with every FusionCharts chart type?

No universal compatibility guarantee is established. Test the chart type, page assets, and installed wkhtmltoimage build you intend to use.

Can wkhtmltoimage replace FusionCharts export?

It can capture a rendered page, including surrounding layout. For chart-only output, FusionCharts’ own export feature may be a more direct option.
