Watir’s “not clickable at point (x,y)” error means WebDriver tried to click the target’s center, but that point could not receive the click—often because another element covers it. Headless Chrome can expose a different viewport and responsive layout than headed Chrome, but that is only one possible cause. Start by reading the full error, checking the element reported to receive the click, and inspecting the page at the exact failing viewport.

What “not clickable at point” means

Finding an element and being able to click it are separate things. Selenium’s interaction guidance explains that a WebDriver element click targets the element’s center. If another element obscures that point, WebDriver returns an element-click-intercepted error. The W3C WebDriver specification describes the same process: WebDriver scrolls the element’s container into view, checks whether the target is in view and unobscured, then reports interception if another element covers its center.

So “Other element would receive the click” is not incidental wording. It identifies a clue about the page’s visible state: a modal backdrop, cookie banner, sticky header, footer, or another element may be in front of the target. The error is about the pointer’s actual click point, not simply whether a locator matched a DOM node.

Why headed Chrome may work while headless Chrome fails

A browser’s viewport affects responsive layout. If headed and headless sessions use different dimensions, a page may rearrange controls or introduce overlap in one session. A 2017 Watir/Selenium example used Watir 6.8 and ChromeDriver 2.33; its accepted answer identified a likely window-size mismatch, and the question author reported that matching the headless size to headed Chrome fixed that particular case. Treat it as a useful diagnostic, not a universal rule for current browser versions. See the original Watir report.

Headless mode itself does not establish the cause. A transient overlay, an offscreen target, a responsive-layout change, or a browser/driver scrolling issue can produce similar symptoms. A September 2025 SeleniumHQ issue, for example, reports scroll-into-view failures with Selenium 4.35.0 and Chrome/Chromium 139/140 in both headed and headless runs. That is one version-specific issue report, not evidence that all current releases share a defect. Read the SeleniumHQ issue.

Diagnose the failure in order

  1. Keep the complete exception. Record the target coordinate and the full “Other element would receive the click” detail. The named element can help identify what is covering the target.
  2. Record the browser dimensions. Compare the actual window or viewport in headed and headless sessions. Reproduce the same dimensions and layout conditions before attributing the failure to headless mode.
  3. Inspect the page at the failure point. Look for cookie notices, modal backdrops, sticky navigation or footers, animations, and responsive rearrangement. Check whether the target is visible and whether another element sits over its center.
  4. Check scrolling and fixed overlays. WebDriver scrolls the target’s container into view before its obscuration check. If the target is near a fixed header or footer, scrolling alone may leave its center covered.
  5. Identify whether the state is transient. If a banner or animation is expected to disappear, wait for that state change rather than assuming the control is ready after a fixed delay.
  6. Fix the condition, then verify the outcome. Use a supported viewport, dismiss the real overlay through its intended control, wait for it to disappear, or correct the page/test state that leaves the target covered. Retry and confirm the intended action actually occurred.
  7. Investigate versions only with evidence. If the page looks correct and the issue persists, record Selenium, Chrome, and ChromeDriver versions and try to reproduce the failure. A version-specific scrolling problem is possible, but the 2025 report does not establish a general compatibility rule.

Fix the cause that matches what you see

Headless and headed layouts differ

Set headless Chrome to a viewport supported by the site and matching the headed run you are comparing against. Then inspect the page again: the goal is to confirm that the target is no longer overlapped, not merely to make the error disappear. The historical Watir report supports viewport matching as a successful fix in that case only; changing the size is not guaranteed to fix an unrelated scroll or overlay problem.

A banner, modal, or other element covers the target

Interact with the covering UI as a user would—such as dismissing a consent notice through its visible control—and wait until it is gone before clicking the intended control. Do not treat the target’s successful lookup as proof that the overlay has disappeared.

The target is offscreen or its center remains covered

Allow the normal WebDriver click to bring the element into view, then determine whether a fixed element still covers its center. If a sticky header or footer remains in the way, address the page state or layout responsible for the obstruction rather than repeatedly enlarging the viewport.

The failure persists across matching layouts

Capture the browser, driver, and Selenium versions along with the full exception and a reproducible page state. Compare behavior in headed and headless mode, but do not assume headed mode is the fix: scroll-related problems have been reported in both modes in a specific Selenium/Chrome configuration.

When keyboard or JavaScript activation is—and is not—appropriate

Keyboard activation is valid when the control is keyboard-operable and the test is meant to exercise that interaction. For example, using the space key on a checkbox can test its keyboard behavior. It does not establish that a pointer click would work, and it should not be used to hide an overlay or a responsive-layout defect.

A JavaScript-triggered click can bypass the pointer-interaction condition that real users encounter. Use it only when the test specifically intends to invoke that behavior; otherwise, it can mask the very obstruction the test should detect.

How to inspect the page state without building a full browser workflow

For this error, the essential evidence is what occupies the target’s click point at the failing viewport. A screenshot can help you inspect that visible state alongside the exception and the browser dimensions. It does not replace checking whether the named intercepting element is expected or whether the target is truly ready.

It can capture screenshots or PDFs through one GET request, with options for viewport, device presets, full-page capture, waiting, and custom CSS or JavaScript. For diagnosing a visible overlay, its clean-shot behavior can remove supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. These captures can help inspect appearance, but they do not prove that your Watir test’s browser state or pointer interaction is correct. See ScreenshotNeo.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom or clue What to check Next step
The error names another element Whether that element is a banner, backdrop, sticky region, or other overlay at the target’s center Dismiss it through its intended control or wait for it to disappear, then retry.
Only headless fails Actual headed and headless viewport dimensions and resulting responsive layout Match a site-supported viewport and inspect whether the overlap changes.
The target is near the viewport edge Whether it was scrolled into view and whether a fixed element still covers its center Correct the obstructing page state; do not assume a larger viewport solves scrolling.
A delay sometimes helps Whether an expected overlay, animation, or state transition has actually finished Wait for the relevant condition rather than relying on an arbitrary fixed sleep.
The issue occurs in both modes Recorded Selenium, Chrome, and ChromeDriver versions and reproducibility Investigate scrolling or driver behavior with those specific versions before changing headless settings.
Keyboard or script activation succeeds Whether the test is intended to exercise keyboard or JavaScript activation rather than pointer input Keep the alternative only when it matches the interaction under test; otherwise fix the obstruction.

FAQ

Does “not clickable at point” mean Watir failed to find the element?

No. It means the attempted pointer interaction could not reach the target at the reported point; locating a DOM element does not guarantee that its center is unobstructed.

Can I tell from the error whether the problem is ChromeDriver?

Not by itself. First inspect the named intercepting element, viewport, and page state. A driver or scrolling issue is one possibility to investigate after recording versions and reproducing the failure.

Is a screenshot enough to prove the click should work?

No. It can show the visible layout, but the click result also depends on the exact target center and whether another element occupies it at interaction time.
