WordPress.com’s current guidance also lists 600 × 315 pixels for a larger preview, 200 × 200 pixels as the minimum image size, and an 8 MB maximum file size. That advice applies when Facebook creates a card from a shared URL—not automatically to a photo uploaded directly to a feed post.
First identify which Facebook image you are making
“Post thumbnail” usually means the image Facebook displays in a link-preview card. You paste a URL, Facebook reads the page, and it builds a card with a title, description and image. The image is selected from the website’s metadata and page content; it is not the same as an image file you attach directly to a status update.
A direct feed-photo upload is a separate format. A September 2026 review of Meta documentation reports that Meta does not publish a required pixel size or crop ratio for ordinary feed-photo uploads. Square artwork can be a practical starting point for a direct upload, but it is an editorial choice, not an official universal Facebook specification.

Recommended size for a Facebook link thumbnail
Use 1200 × 630 pixels when possible
A 1200 × 630 image has a 1.9048:1 aspect ratio, commonly rounded to 1.91:1. This is the useful high-resolution target for a link card because it gives Facebook enough pixels for large and high-density displays while matching the wide shape used by the preview.

Keep important text, logos and faces away from the extreme edges. Facebook can scale or crop a preview in different placements, and a little internal padding makes the design more resilient without changing the file’s overall ratio.
Know the lower thresholds
- 600 × 315 px: WordPress.com lists this as the minimum for a larger link preview.
- 200 × 200 px: WordPress.com lists this as the minimum image size. A square at this threshold may not produce the larger wide treatment.
- 8 MB: WordPress.com lists this as the maximum file size for the image used by its link-preview guidance.
These are platform guidance values, not a promise that every Facebook placement will display the same crop. Use the larger 1200 × 630 target unless a publishing system imposes a smaller limit.
How Facebook chooses the image for a shared link
Set the intended page image first
For a WordPress.com post or page, the featured image is checked first, followed by other images in the content. Facebook can still analyze the page and choose what it considers the best representation. Therefore, setting a featured image is important but does not guarantee that Facebook will use it.
- Create or export the image at 1200 × 630 px, keeping critical details inside a safe margin.
- Compress it so the file remains below the applicable 8 MB maximum without introducing visible artifacts.
- Set it as the page’s featured image, or use the equivalent social-preview image field in your CMS.
- Publish or update the page, then share its URL on Facebook.
- Inspect the card before promoting the post. Check the image, headline, description and destination URL together.
Why an old image can remain visible
Facebook stores previously fetched images. WordPress.com Support says Facebook may not recheck an image for many days or weeks, so changing the file on your site does not necessarily change an already fetched preview immediately. The support guidance specifically notes: “After changing an image on your website, you may find that Facebook still displays the old image.”

Fixing an incorrect or stale thumbnail
- Confirm that the intended image is actually published and reachable on the page.
- Check the page’s featured-image setting. On WordPress.com, it is evaluated before images in the body.
- Verify the replacement file’s dimensions, aspect ratio and file size.
- Open Facebook’s Sharing Debugger for the exact URL.
- Choose Scrape Again, then inspect the refreshed preview.
- If the old image still appears, wait for Facebook’s cache to expire and repeat the scrape. A refresh request cannot guarantee an immediate change in every feed.
Direct photo uploads: what size should you use?
Do not apply the 1200 × 630 link-card rule to every photo you upload directly. The reviewed September 2026 guide found no official Meta requirement for a direct feed photo’s pixel dimensions or crop ratio. Your choice should follow the image’s subject and the way people will view it.
- Use a square canvas when you want a simple, predictable composition and the same artwork may be reused in several social contexts.
- Use a landscape or portrait canvas when the photograph’s subject benefits from that shape.
- Export at a size large enough for the detail you need, then check Facebook’s preview after uploading.
- Keep captions and logos away from the edges because the visible crop can vary by device and placement.
Square is practical guidance, not a promise that Facebook will never crop another ratio. If the image is business-critical, upload a test post or preview it before scheduling a campaign.
Design and export checklist
- Format: Use a widely supported raster format such as JPEG or PNG.
- Dimensions: For a link preview, use 1200 × 630 px; do not upscale a tiny 200 × 200 source and expect the same quality.
- Aspect ratio: Keep the link image close to 1.91:1.
- File weight: Stay under 8 MB for the WordPress.com thresholds.
- Legibility: Test headline text at phone width, not only on a desktop canvas.
- Contrast: Make the subject and text distinguishable from the background.
- Metadata: Ensure the page points to the intended image before sharing the URL.
Check the page yourself before sharing
A browser test can reveal whether a page loads correctly, whether lazy images appear, and whether a consent banner or chat widget obscures the content you intend to inspect. A manual workflow is:
- Open the page in a private browser window.
- Accept or dismiss the site’s consent prompt as a normal visitor would.
- Wait for the page and its images to finish loading.
- Capture or inspect the page, then compare the visible artwork with the image configured for the link preview.
- After any change, request a fresh Facebook scrape rather than assuming the cache has updated.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Choose quality before compression
Start with the 1200 × 630 source, then compress a copy. Excessive compression can make small text and sharp logos unreadable. If your CMS creates several derivatives, verify which derivative is exposed to Facebook rather than assuming the original file is used.
Allow for cache delays
A correctly replaced file can appear wrong only because Facebook retained an earlier fetch. Record the time you changed the image, run Scrape Again, and check the card again later if necessary. Do not repeatedly redesign the file when the problem is only cache age.
Separate preview testing from post analytics
Image dimensions control the source asset and preview behavior; they do not determine reach, clicks or engagement. Treat those as separate measurement questions and avoid presenting the 1200 × 630 guidance as an audience-performance statistic.
Troubleshooting common failures
The card shows the wrong image
Check the featured image first, then inspect other page images and request a new scrape. Facebook may choose another image after analyzing the page, so remove or replace competing images if your CMS allows it.

The preview is tiny
Confirm that the source is at least 600 × 315 for the larger treatment and that it is not being reduced below 200 × 200. Re-exporting at 1200 × 630 gives Facebook more usable pixels.
The image is cropped awkwardly
Verify the file is close to 1.91:1 and move essential content inward. A direct feed photo and a link card have different display rules; make sure you are solving the correct format.
The old artwork persists after an update
Use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and Scrape Again. WordPress.com warns that otherwise the old fetch can remain for many days or weeks.

Can I use 600 × 315 instead?
Yes. WordPress.com lists 600 × 315 as the minimum for a larger link preview, but 1200 × 630 is the better starting file when you control the source.
