They describe the screenshot image in pixels—not necessarily the browser viewport or the page rectangle. The values belong to the particular run you received; Google does not document one fixed resolution for every run.
Request a PageSpeed Insights result
The PageSpeed Insights API v5 accepts a GET request at https://www.googleapis.com/pagespeedonline/v5/runPagespeed. Include the page’s URL in the url query parameter. Google’s getting-started guide also demonstrates using an API key; the key is optional in the basic request example, but you can supply one for your use of the API. The response is JSON containing Lighthouse results. Google’s getting-started guide describes the request workflow and data returned.
Replace https://example.com/ below with the page you want to analyze. These commands make a request; they do not assert that a particular page was tested or prescribe an expected screenshot size.
cURL
curl -G 'https://www.googleapis.com/pagespeedonline/v5/runPagespeed'
--data-urlencode 'url=https://example.com/'
--data-urlencode 'key=YOUR_API_KEY'
-o psi-result.json
If you are not using a key, omit the final --data-urlencode line, including its preceding continuation backslash. The saved file is the JSON response.

In a production script, keep API keys out of source control and load them from an environment variable or another secret store. For a public page, the key can be omitted when appropriate to your API setup.
Read the screenshot dimensions from the JSON
In the returned Lighthouse result, locate the screenshot object and read its integer width and height properties. Google defines them as the screenshot width and height in pixels. The screenshot image data is base64-encoded and has a mime_type; you do not need to decode that image just to read the two dimensions. See the PageSpeed Insights API v5 reference for the response schema.
The Python and Node examples check that the object and numeric fields exist before using them. Apply the same guard in any language: a documented response property is not a reason to assume every response you receive contains it. If your client’s returned JSON differs, inspect the actual Lighthouse result and follow the screenshot object present there rather than hard-coding a value.

Do not infer the dimensions from a screenshot thumbnail shown in another tool, or from the API request URL. Record the two values from the response alongside the page URL and run context if you need to compare results later.

Screenshot dimensions, page rectangle, and viewport are different
| Value | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
screenshot.width and screenshot.height |
The dimensions of the screenshot image, in pixels. | Use these when someone asks for the resolution of that screenshot. |
screenshot.page_rect.width and screenshot.page_rect.height |
The width and height of a page-region rectangle; the rectangle also has left and top coordinates. |
These describe page geometry, not the image’s pixel dimensions. Do not substitute them for the screenshot width and height. |
| Viewport dimensions | The browser’s visible layout area for a run. | These are not interchangeable with screenshot dimensions. The API reference does not define the screenshot’s pixel size as a universal viewport measurement. |
For example, if the question is “How large is the image returned in this result?”, use the screenshot object’s own width and height. If it is “What area of the page does this rectangle cover, and where does it begin?”, inspect page_rect. The numeric values can differ because the fields answer different questions; do not call a page rectangle’s dimensions the image resolution.
Check snapshots separately
The response can also contain snapshots[], a collection of additional screenshots from partial render states. Each listed snapshot has its own width and height. If you are evaluating one of those images, read the dimensions on that snapshot rather than assuming they match the primary screenshot object. The main screenshot and snapshots are distinct images, not multiple names for one resolution.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.

When processing snapshots, treat the array as optional and validate each item before using its dimensions. An absent array does not give you a basis for inventing snapshot values, and a snapshot’s size should not be reported as the primary screenshot’s size.
Why dimensions can differ between runs
A PSI response represents a particular Lighthouse run and configuration, not a contract for a single screenshot size across every request. Lighthouse results include context such as Lighthouse version, fetch time, user agent, URLs, and configuration settings. Lighthouse’s result documentation explains these result details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen comparing dimensions, compare like with like: retain each response’s run metadata and inspect whether its URL, user agent, configuration, or Lighthouse version differs. Report the dimensions as values observed in those specific responses, rather than concluding that PageSpeed Insights always uses one resolution. The documentation establishes what the fields mean; it does not promise a fixed width-height pair for all pages or runs.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected values
- No screenshot object: Confirm that you are reading the Lighthouse result in the parsed JSON, not another top-level section. Handle a missing object explicitly instead of returning a made-up default.
- Width or height is absent: Check the object and field names in the response you received, and treat missing fields as unavailable. Do not silently replace them with viewport dimensions or
page_rectvalues. - Your script fails before parsing JSON: Check the HTTP status and response body first. A non-success response or an API error body is not a Lighthouse result; surface that error instead of trying to read screenshot properties from it.
- The image appears to have another size: Verify that you are comparing the same image object. The primary screenshot,
snapshots[]entries, and a page rectangle are separate things. - Two PSI runs report different dimensions: Compare their run and configuration metadata before treating the difference as a change in page layout. A single run’s dimensions are not a universal API setting.
- The image data is not needed: Read the JSON width and height directly. Base64-decoding the screenshot is unnecessary when the only question is its documented dimensions.
What PSI’s screenshot does—and does not—tell you
The API reference supplies screenshot dimensions and image data as part of a Lighthouse result. That is useful when your task is to inspect the screenshot associated with a PSI run. It is a different workflow from calling a dedicated screenshot service to capture a page at a viewport, produce a PDF, or automate image capture independently of a PSI analysis.
Google’s getting-started guide says the API returns Lighthouse lab data and CrUX real-world data. The same guide states Google plans to discontinue including CrUX data in this API and recommends the CrUX API or CrUX History API instead; that guide does not specify an effective date. This planned data transition does not change what the screenshot width and height fields mean, but it is relevant if you use PSI for field metrics as well as screenshots. Check Google’s guide for the current statement before building around that data source.

If you need a direct website capture rather than the screenshot attached to a PSI run, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns an image (PNG, JPEG, or WebP) or PDF; use the image response’s own dimensions when you need its pixel resolution. This does not retrieve PSI’s Lighthouse screenshot object or replace PSI analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to decode the screenshot to get its resolution?
No. Read the screenshot object’s JSON width and height fields; those values are in pixels.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to read a PageSpeed Insights screenshot object?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures a page directly; it does not return PSI’s Lighthouse result. Use PSI’s response when you need that run’s screenshot fields.
