Use Windows+Shift+S to capture a visible part of a webpage. To capture the entire page—including content below the fold—open it in Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S, and choose Capture full page. Use Windows+PrtScn when you want a file of every display, Alt+PrtScn for only the active window, and Ctrl+P when a printable document is the real goal.
The right shortcut depends on two things: how much of the page you need and whether the result should go to the clipboard, a saved image, or a printer/PDF workflow.
Choose the shortcut by capture goal

Keyboard labels vary on some laptops and compact keyboards. If PrtScn is combined with another key, use the label printed on your keyboard or the equivalent function-layer shortcut.
Capture part of a webpage with Windows+Shift+S
This is the quickest method when the text, image, chart, or error message you need is already visible.

- Open the webpage and arrange the browser so the required content is visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows dims the screen and displays the Snipping Tool toolbar.
- Choose a snip mode if the toolbar offers one: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen.
- For a rectangular snip, drag around the webpage area. Release the pointer to take the capture.
- The image is copied to the clipboard. Select the notification that appears to open it in Snipping Tool.
- Use the editor to mark up, copy again, or save the image in the location and format you choose.
Rectangular versus freeform snips
Rectangular mode is best for a clean crop around a paragraph, product image, or browser panel. Freeform mode lets you trace an irregular shape, but the result can be less convenient for documentation. Window mode captures an entire selected window, while full-screen mode captures every visible display.
What this shortcut cannot do
Windows+Shift+S captures pixels currently on screen. It does not automatically follow a webpage down the page. If you need content below the fold, use Edge’s full-page Screenshot feature instead.
Capture an entire webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture “an entire webpage in a single screenshot—even content that extends beyond your screen.” It is the built-in choice for a long article, landing page, documentation page, or receipt.
- Open the target page in Microsoft Edge and wait for its visible content to finish loading.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose Capture full page. If you only need a portion, choose the area-capture option instead.
- Review the resulting capture in the overlay. Use the available markup tools, copy it, or save it.
If the shortcut does not open Screenshot, open Edge’s menu or context menu and look for Screenshot (Microsoft previously called the feature Web Capture). Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. An organization policy can also control the feature; the WebCaptureEnabled policy documents that behavior.
When a full-page capture is the wrong output
- For a page intended to be printed or archived as selectable text, use Ctrl+P and choose a printer or PDF destination.
- For a very long page that must be edited as separate sections, take several area snips rather than one extremely tall image.
- For content that changes while scrolling, record the page state and timestamp; a full-page image represents one capture, not a live page.
Save the whole screen or copy a window
Windows+PrtScn: save a full-screen file
Press Windows+PrtScn to save the visible screen directly. Windows places the image in PicturesScreenshots. This is useful when you need a file immediately and do not need to crop out the browser chrome or other applications.

PrtScn: copy the full screen
Press PrtScn to copy the full screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-aware application and press Ctrl+V to paste it. You can then crop and save the result.
Alt+PrtScn: copy only the active window
Click the browser window you want first, then press Alt+PrtScn. Only that active window is copied. This avoids capturing a second monitor or unrelated applications, but it still includes the browser’s title bar and controls.

Press Ctrl+P in Edge when the desired result is printable content. The print dialog lets you configure the destination and page settings and can route to the system print dialog. A PDF made through printing is generally more useful than a screenshot when readers need selectable text, page numbers, or a document layout.
Print output can differ from the screen: responsive layouts, hidden navigation, background graphics, margins, and page breaks are controlled by print styles and dialog settings. Do not describe Ctrl+P as a screenshot shortcut; it produces a print-oriented result.

Make webpage screenshots readable and reliable
Prepare the page first
- Close cookie banners, chat bubbles, newsletter prompts, and floating video controls when possible.
- Set the browser zoom to a level that makes text readable without cutting off important columns.
- Wait for images, charts, and fonts to load. Lazy-loaded images may not appear until the page has been scrolled.
- For a time-sensitive page, note the URL and capture time in the file name or accompanying notes.
Choose an output that matches the task
- Clipboard: best for quickly pasting a visible error into support chat.
- PNG or other image file: best for annotations, visual review, and sharing a fixed appearance.
- Printed page or PDF: best for reading, filing, or text selection.
- Full-page image: best when visual continuity matters more than easy editing.
Protect private information
Before sharing, inspect the capture for account names, email addresses, order numbers, tokens, internal URLs, and browser notifications. Crop or mark out secrets in Snipping Tool before uploading the image.
Troubleshooting Windows webpage screenshots
Windows+Shift+S does nothing
Confirm that the Windows key is not disabled by a keyboard utility or gaming mode. Try opening Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its capture button. On managed PCs, application or keyboard policies may restrict shortcuts.
The Edge full-page option is missing
Update Edge, then check the browser menu or context menu for Screenshot. Microsoft says the feature’s availability and behavior vary by device, market, and browser version. A managed-device policy may disable it; administrators can review WebCaptureEnabled.
The capture stops at the visible viewport
You used a screen snip or a normal window capture. Those methods cannot include content that was never on screen. In Edge, reopen Screenshot with Ctrl+Shift+S and select Capture full page.
The saved image is blank or missing page elements
Reload the page, wait for dynamic content, and dismiss overlays before capturing. Some pages require scrolling to trigger lazy loading. If the page is protected by a bot check or requires an authenticated session, capture it after completing the site’s normal sign-in flow and verify that the content is actually visible.

The result is too tall to use
Capture a meaningful section with Windows+Shift+S, or print to PDF with Ctrl+P. For documentation, several labeled sections are often easier to review than one extremely tall bitmap.
