The quickest way to capture a web map is to set the exact location, zoom, layers, and labels you need, keep the provider’s attribution visible, then use your browser’s viewport or full-page screenshot command. Chrome, Firefox, and Windows all include capture tools. Choose a viewport capture for the map you can currently see; choose full-page capture only when you need the rest of the web page, because it does not automatically show a larger geographic area.
Prepare the map before you capture it
A screenshot records the map’s current rendered state. Configure that state first so you do not have to recapture it.
- Open the map in a supported browser. Google says the latest full Google Maps web experience supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge. JavaScript must be enabled or the map may remain blank. See Google’s browser and JavaScript guidance.
- Choose the geographic extent. Search for a place, pan until the intended area is centered, and set the zoom level. A screenshot cannot reveal streets outside the map viewport, so zoom out or capture several overlapping views if you need broader coverage.
- Select layers and map type. Pick road, satellite, terrain, transit, traffic, or another available layer. Turn labels and overlays on or off according to the purpose of the image.
- Finish rendering. Wait for map tiles, labels, route lines, markers, and other overlays to appear. If images are still drawing, the saved file can contain blank patches.
- Clear unwanted interface elements. Close search panels, directions cards, sign-in prompts, cookie dialogs, and other pop-ups. Leave controls that help the reader understand the map when appropriate.
- Keep attribution visible. Do not crop away the Google logo, copyright line, or third-party data-provider notices. Google’s Geo guidelines require attribution for Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View content, including applicable providers: Google Geo guidelines. Attribution text varies by geography and content type.
Capture a visible map or selected region
Chrome: viewport screenshot
Use this when the map view currently visible in the browser is exactly what you want.
- Open the map and finish the preparation steps above.
- Open Chrome DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
- In DevTools, open the More options menu (the three-dot button).
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome saves an image of the current viewport. Chrome documents this path as “More options > Capture screenshot”: Chrome DevTools screenshot documentation.
This method includes the browser viewport, including any map controls and attribution inside it. Resize the browser before capturing if labels are too small, then repeat the capture.

Firefox: visible view or selected area
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or open Firefox’s screenshot command from the browser menu.
- Choose a detected page part, drag a region, select Save visible, or select Save full page.
- Download the PNG or copy it to the clipboard, then inspect the saved image.
Firefox’s region tool is useful when you need only the map and attribution but not the surrounding page. Avoid dragging the selection so tightly that the attribution disappears. Details are in Mozilla’s screenshot instructions.
Windows Snipping Tool
Press Windows+Shift+S, choose a rectangular snip or window snip, and select the map. Save the result from the Snipping Tool notification or editor. A rectangular snip gives precise control over the map boundaries; a window snip preserves the browser window as displayed. Include the attribution line in either case. Windows documents the tool at Open Snipping Tool and take a screenshot.
Capture the whole rendered web page
A full-page screenshot includes content outside the current viewport, such as an article section surrounding an embedded map. It does not pan an interactive map or create a higher-coverage geographic image. Set the map’s position and zoom first.
Chrome: full-size screenshot
- Open DevTools and the More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Open the downloaded image and verify that the map tiles, labels, and attribution survived the page-length capture.
Chrome describes this command as capturing “the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport.” Very tall pages can produce large files; a viewport capture or selected region may be easier to read.
Firefox: full page
Choose Take Screenshot, then Save full page. This is appropriate for a page where the map is one component among text, controls, or a legend. If the map itself is a fixed-size canvas, full-page mode still captures that same geographic extent.

Choose the right capture mode
| Need | Best choice | What it captures | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exactly the map currently on screen | Chrome Capture screenshot or Firefox Save visible | Current viewport, controls, labels, and attribution | Does not include content below the viewport |
| Only a clean map excerpt | Firefox region or Windows rectangular snip | Selected pixels | You must select enough area for attribution |
| Map plus surrounding article or legend | Chrome Capture a full size screenshot or Firefox Save full page | The entire rendered page | Does not enlarge the map’s geographic area |
| Large geographic coverage | Zoom out, or capture multiple deliberate views | A wider area at a chosen scale | One full-page command cannot pan an interactive map |
Check the file before sharing
- Extent: Confirm the intended place, boundaries, route, and zoom are present.
- Readability: Labels should be legible at the image’s actual display size. Enlarge the browser or display scale before capture rather than enlarging a small image afterward.
- Rendering: Look for missing tiles, half-drawn labels, or absent overlays.
- Privacy: Remove account names, saved places, addresses, directions, or other personal information.
- Attribution: Keep Google and relevant data-provider notices visible. Cropping is acceptable only when it does not remove required attribution.
- Format: PNG is generally best for text and labels. Use the browser’s downloaded format unless your workflow specifically requires another one.
Common problems and fixes
The map is blank or incomplete
JavaScript may be disabled, or the page may not have finished loading. Enable JavaScript, reload the page, wait for tiles and labels, and capture again. Also check whether an extension, strict privacy setting, or network filter is blocking map resources.
Labels or overlays are missing
Wait several seconds after panning or changing layers. Zoom to a level at which labels are normally shown. Capture the visible viewport instead of assuming full-page mode will generate additional map detail.
The screenshot contains too much surrounding page
Use Chrome’s viewport command, Firefox’s Save visible, or a rectangular Snipping Tool selection. Keep the attribution line inside the selection.

Increase the browser window size or operating-system display scale before capturing. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution screenshot afterward; interpolation cannot recreate missing label detail.
Attribution was cropped out
Recapture with a wider selection or include the complete map container. Do not obscure, replace, or remove copyright and provider text. Google states that users must be able to tell which content is provided by Google Maps; commercial or revenue-generating integrations may have additional Google Maps Platform obligations.

Full-page capture did not show more map
This is expected for a fixed-size interactive map. Full-page tools capture page layout, not new geographic tiles. Pan and zoom first, or save several overlapping viewport images.
Or skip the browser setup
For repeatable captures, automation, or server-side workflows, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

A personal screenshot and a commercial product can have different obligations. Google’s guidance allows a user to capture a screenshot from Google Maps for adding custom labels or graphics, while still requiring attribution. If the image will appear in advertising, a paid product, or a revenue-generating integration, review the applicable Google Maps Platform terms rather than assuming a personal-use rule applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a map without the browser controls?
Yes. Use Chrome DevTools’ Capture screenshot, Firefox Save visible, or a rectangular Snipping Tool selection around the map itself. Keep required attribution inside the selected area.
Does a full-page screenshot capture the entire world map?
No. It captures the web page’s layout. To cover more geography, zoom out or create multiple viewport captures.
Why are some map tiles missing in my image?
The map was likely still rendering, JavaScript was disabled, or a browser extension or network filter blocked resources. Enable JavaScript, reload, wait for tiles, and recapture.
Is it acceptable to remove the Google copyright line?
No. Google requires attribution for Google Maps content and applicable data providers. Crop only when the required notices remain visible.
