Set use.channel to 'chrome' in a Playwright project, make sure branded Google Chrome is installed on the machine, and run that project by its configured name. The channel selects installed Google Chrome—not Playwright’s bundled Chromium—so it is the right setup when your test must represent the current Chrome release, Chrome’s media codecs, or an enterprise-managed browser environment.

Configure a Google Chrome project

Playwright Test chooses browsers through projects. Add a project whose use settings include channel: 'chrome'. The project name is only a label, but you will use it verbatim when selecting the project from the command line.

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  projects: [
    {
      name: 'Google Chrome',
      use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'], channel: 'chrome' },
    },
  ],
});

The devices['Desktop Chrome'] spread supplies a desktop viewport and related defaults. It is convenient rather than mandatory; the browser selection comes from channel: 'chrome'. You can add other settings to the same use object, such as headless, baseURL, permissions, or a custom viewport.

Keep multiple browser targets

A project list can contain both branded Chrome and Playwright-managed Chromium. This lets one command run your full matrix while a project-specific command checks only Chrome.

Without a channel, Playwright uses its managed browser configuration. Do not use channel: 'chromium' as a synonym for Google Chrome: that is a separate option associated with opting into Chromium’s newer headless mode.

Make sure Chrome is available

Playwright can control branded Chrome, but it does not install branded Chrome by default. Install Google Chrome through your operating system’s approved software channel, or use the browser-install and help commands documented for the Playwright version installed in your project. The exact command and dependency flags can vary by version and operating system, so check the CLI help before copying a command into CI.

npx playwright install --help

This command displays the options supported by your installed Playwright release, including browser arguments and dependency installation. It is distinct from installing Playwright’s managed Chromium: a successful managed-browser install does not guarantee that the branded chrome channel exists.

Verify the executable and permissions

  • Launch Chrome normally on the test machine to confirm that the installation is complete.
  • Check that the account running Playwright can execute Chrome and create a temporary profile.
  • In CI, install Chrome in the image or runner used by the test job; do not assume a developer’s desktop installation is present.
  • Record the Chrome version and operating-system image in test artifacts when the exact browser release matters. Installed Chrome updates independently of your Playwright package.

Enterprise policies can restrict automation, profile creation, extensions, or debugging connections. Playwright describes policy-constrained environments as outside its project scope. A bundled Chromium project is often easier for local testing under strict policies, while branded Chrome can remain appropriate on less-constrained build agents.

Run only the Chrome project

Use the exact project name from the configuration:

npx playwright test --project="Google Chrome"

Quoting is useful because the name contains a space. If you rename the project, update the command to match. To run every configured project, omit the selector:

npx playwright test

A minimal test works unchanged with either project:

test('home page has the expected title', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/Example Domain/);
});

Run the test with the Chrome project command. Playwright starts the installed branded browser, applies the project’s device settings, executes the test, and writes the normal test results and report.

Understand what the channel changes

Branded Chrome versus bundled Chromium

Target How it is selected Best fit
Branded Google Chrome channel: 'chrome' Current public Chrome regression, official Chrome media codecs, or an environment where enterprise policies must be represented.
Playwright-managed Chromium Leave channel unset in the normal Chromium project Reproducible Playwright-managed coverage and a browser build that can be ahead of stable Chrome.
Chromium newer headless mode channel: 'chromium' Opting into the documented newer Chromium headless implementation; it is not branded Google Chrome.

Playwright’s documentation presents bundled Chromium as a good default for many workflows because its supported build can be ahead of stable Chrome and expose compatibility problems earlier. Select chrome when the release your users run is the requirement, not merely because the browser is named Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the test objective

  • Public-release regression: use branded Chrome so failures are observed against the installed stable browser.
  • Codec-dependent features: use branded Chrome when your application depends on media codecs bundled with official Chrome.
  • Enterprise behavior: use branded Chrome on a runner carrying the policies you need to validate.
  • Playwright-managed baseline: use bundled Chromium when consistency with Playwright’s tested browser build is more important than matching a user-installed release.

These targets answer different questions. A pass in bundled Chromium is not evidence that every installed Chrome build behaves identically, and a pass in one locally installed Chrome version is not a permanently reproducible browser baseline.

Headless, headed, and CI considerations

Chrome and Edge use a newer headless implementation that is closer to regular headed mode. It can behave differently from the Chromium headless shell used by default when no channel is specified. If rendering, downloads, media, permissions, or screenshots depend on headless behavior, run CI with the same channel and mode used to establish the expected result.

Use headed mode while diagnosing launch or rendering problems:

npx playwright test --project="Google Chrome" --headed

Once the test is understood, return to the mode used by your pipeline. Do not switch to channel: 'chromium' merely to obtain a newer headless implementation when the requirement is specifically branded Google Chrome; that changes the browser target.

Common failures and fixes

“Executable doesn’t exist” or Chrome cannot be launched

Cause: branded Chrome is not installed, is installed outside the runner image, or the automation account cannot access it.

Fix: install Chrome in the same environment that runs the tests, verify it launches under that account, and inspect npx playwright install --help for version-appropriate installation and dependency options. A managed Chromium installation does not satisfy channel: 'chrome'.

The project selector matches nothing

Cause: the command’s value differs from the configured name, including capitalization or spaces.

Fix: copy the project name exactly, for example --project="Google Chrome".

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tests pass in Chromium but fail in Chrome

Cause: the two browser targets can differ in release level, codecs, policies, or headless implementation.

Fix: decide which behavior is required, capture the browser version and CI image, and debug with the same channel and headed/headless mode as the failing job. Treat the difference as compatibility information rather than silently replacing the required target.

Chrome starts locally but not in CI

Cause: the CI image lacks Chrome, required system dependencies, a writable temporary directory, or permission to launch the browser.

Fix: provision Chrome as part of the image or job, run a small smoke test under the CI account, and keep the browser-install and dependency steps in the pipeline definition. If corporate policy blocks branded Chrome, use a managed Chromium project for tests that do not require branded-browser coverage.

Headless output differs from headed output

Cause: the channel determines which headless implementation is used.

Fix: validate the intended channel in the same mode as CI, then compare screenshots, console errors, viewport settings, and browser versions before changing configuration.

If your goal is to obtain a clean image or PDF of a URL rather than run assertions, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request website screenshot API. It accepts the page like a visitor, removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Operational practices for reliable Chrome tests

  • Pin the Playwright package in your project and review browser changes when upgrading.
  • Keep a separate Chrome project name so CI commands are explicit and auditable.
  • Publish the installed Chrome version, operating-system image, channel, headless setting, and Playwright version with test results.
  • Use a small launch smoke test to distinguish installation failures from application failures.
  • Run the branded project only where its coverage is needed, and retain a managed Chromium project when you also want Playwright’s stable automation baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does channel: 'chrome' download Google Chrome?

No. It selects branded Chrome already available on the machine. Install and provision that browser separately.

Can I run the Chrome project and Chromium project together?

Yes. Define both as projects, then run all projects with npx playwright test or select one with its exact project name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is channel: 'chromium' branded Chrome?

No. It is a separate Chromium channel used for the newer headless implementation; branded Chrome requires channel: 'chrome'.

The Bottom Line

Use channel: 'chrome' when the test must represent installed Google Chrome; use bundled Chromium when Playwright-managed consistency is the priority. Install the branded browser explicitly, run the named project, and validate the same headless mode and environment used by CI.
