When an image is missing from a Puppeteer screenshot or PDF, first find out whether its request failed, it had not loaded when capture began, or the output’s CSS and capture settings hid it. Log image requests and inspect the page, then wait for the specific assets your output needs. For PDFs, also check print styles: Puppeteer uses print media by default, and printBackground: true affects CSS backgrounds—not failed <img> requests.

Diagnose what kind of image is missing

Do not start by adding a longer delay. A delay can help with late content, but it cannot fix a broken URL, an authorization failure, a print rule that hides an image, or a screenshot that does not include the image’s location. Identify the element and the request outcome first.

Inspect image elements and their loading state

After navigation, inspect the images relevant to the output. This helper reports each image’s source, whether loading is complete, and whether the browser obtained usable natural dimensions:

const images = await page.evaluate(() =>
  [...document.images].map(img => ({
    src: img.currentSrc || img.src,
    complete: img.complete,
    naturalWidth: img.naturalWidth,
    naturalHeight: img.naturalHeight,
    loading: img.loading
  }))
);
console.table(images);

An image with complete: true and zero natural dimensions did not produce a usable image. That is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis: inspect the corresponding request and the page’s own rendering logic. If the image has dimensions but is absent from the output, investigate CSS, media mode, viewport, clipping, and capture timing.

Log failed requests and browser errors

Attach listeners before navigating so you do not miss early failures. Request failure messages can distinguish a network-level failure from a later rendering or capture issue:

page.on('requestfailed', request => {
  console.error('Request failed:', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
});

page.on('console', message => {
  if (message.type() === 'error') console.error('Page console:', message.text());
});

page.on('pageerror', error => console.error('Page error:', error));

A failed request may point to an incorrect or inaccessible URL, missing authentication, network conditions, or a server-side problem. A successful request does not by itself prove the image was decoded, visible, or within the captured area.

Wait for the right content before capture

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' and waiting for a selector when capturing a particular element. Those are useful readiness signals, but network idleness is not a guarantee that each required image loaded successfully. The network-idle API waits for the network to be idle; it does not declare that a particular image request succeeded.

Basic navigation and screenshot pattern

const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
if (!response || !response.ok()) {
  throw new Error(`Navigation failed: ${response?.status() ?? 'no response'}`);
}

await page.waitForSelector('img.hero');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

The selector wait confirms that a matching element exists; it does not ensure its image data has loaded. Add a page-specific image check for the assets that matter to your capture. For example:

async function waitForImages(page, selector = 'img') {
  await page.waitForFunction(selector => {
    const images = [...document.querySelectorAll(selector)];
    return images.length > 0 && images.every(img =>
      img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0
    );
  }, {}, selector);
}

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('img.hero');
await waitForImages(page, 'img.hero');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

Use a selector that matches the images your output actually needs. Requiring every image on a page can cause unnecessary waits or failures when unrelated content is intentionally unavailable. In production, set an appropriate timeout and report which asset failed rather than waiting indefinitely. If the page uses CSS backgrounds instead of <img> elements, this check will not detect them; inspect the relevant element’s computed styles and request activity instead.

Lazy-loaded and app-rendered images

Some pages request images only when an element approaches the viewport, or only after application code runs. A network-idle wait that occurs before those actions cannot wait for requests that have not started yet. If the page’s behavior requires it, scroll the relevant image into view, wait for the application’s own ready signal, then verify that the image has usable dimensions. For a full-page capture, consider whether scrolling through the page is needed to trigger lazy loading before the final capture.

When using page.setContent()

page.setContent() assigns markup to the current page rather than navigating to the markup’s original website. Its documented wait option defaults to load. Relative image paths may therefore resolve differently than they do on the site you copied the HTML from. Use absolute URLs or establish an appropriate base URL in the document, and check the actual resolved currentSrc in the page. See the setContent API for the method’s behavior and options.

Check screenshot scope and capture options

By default, fullPage is false, so a screenshot captures the viewport rather than the entire document. If an image appears below the fold, it may simply be outside the output. Check the viewport size, target element, clip rectangle, and whether the desired content lies inside the chosen region. The ScreenshotOptions reference documents the capture options and defaults.

await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });

For an element capture, wait for the target and capture that element explicitly:

const hero = await page.waitForSelector('.hero');
if (!hero) throw new Error('Hero element was not found');
await hero.screenshot({ path: 'hero.png' });

An element can exist but still be hidden, clipped by an ancestor, or contain an image that has not loaded. Inspect its dimensions and styles if the resulting capture is blank or incomplete.

Fix PDF output that differs from the screenshot

Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() generates a PDF using the print CSS media type by default. Print-specific rules may hide, replace, resize, or reposition content, so inspect @media print styles when images appear in a screenshot but not in the PDF. The Page API documents PDF generation and its print-media behavior.

Use screen styling when that is the intended result

Call emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF if you want screen rather than print media styles:

await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf' });

Choose this only when the screen layout is the desired PDF. Print styles may be intentional—for example, to adjust page breaks or omit on-screen controls—so switching media types can change more than image visibility.

Enable CSS background graphics when needed

printBackground defaults to false. Enable it when the missing visual is a CSS background that should appear in the PDF:

await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', printBackground: true });

This option controls print background graphics; it does not repair a failed image request or act as a general loading switch for ordinary <img> assets. PDF generation waits for fonts by default, but font readiness is not a check that images have loaded. Verify image readiness separately before calling page.pdf(). See the PDFOptions reference for the available PDF settings.

Common failures and how to recover

  • Waiting for network idle still produces a broken image: inspect the request outcome and image dimensions. Network idleness can occur after a failed request; handle the failure rather than extending the idle wait.
  • waitForSelector() succeeds but the image is blank: the element’s presence is not proof that its source loaded. Check complete, naturalWidth, and currentSrc, and wait for a usable image state.
  • A relative source works in a browser but not after setContent(): the content’s document URL context differs. Resolve the image to an absolute URL or provide a suitable base URL, then inspect the URL the browser actually requested.
  • A PDF omits a background: set printBackground: true if the background should print. For an ordinary image element, check its request and print CSS instead.
  • A PDF omits an image that appears on screen: inspect @media print rules. If the screen appearance is specifically required in the PDF, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf().
  • A full-page capture still lacks lazy images: determine whether the site loads them on scroll. Trigger the relevant loading behavior and verify the image elements before capturing.
  • A readiness wait hangs: scope it to required images, apply a timeout, and surface the unresolved URLs in the error. An unavailable asset should become a clear failure or an intentional omission, not an endless job.

Performance and reliability considerations

Waiting for every request or every image can make a capture depend on unrelated analytics, advertisements, or optional content. Prefer a readiness condition tied to the output’s required elements, and retain request-failure logging so a bad asset is distinguishable from slow content. A fixed sleep is simple but trades speed for uncertainty: short waits can still capture too early, while long waits slow every successful page.

For repeatable jobs, make the capture decision explicit: which images are required, how long the job may wait, what counts as success, and whether a missing optional image should fail the job. Puppeteer’s defaults and API details can change; the cited official references were accessed September 29, 2026, and identify version 25.12.0 for the screenshot, PDF, options, Page, and network-idle references, with the setContent() reference labeled 25.11.0. Check the installed Puppeteer version before depending on version-sensitive behavior.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without operating Puppeteer yourself, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the API can also capture full pages, wait for a selector or network idle, and accept custom headers or cookies. The API parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
  -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. It accepts cookie banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots monthly with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month—no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does waitUntil: 'networkidle2' guarantee that every image loaded?

No. It indicates network idleness, not successful loading and decoding of each image. Check the specific image elements and their request outcomes.

Does printBackground: true fix missing <img> elements in a PDF?

No. It enables print background graphics. For a missing image element, inspect its request, loading state, and print CSS.

Which Puppeteer version should I use for these options?

The referenced official documentation is for Puppeteer 25.12.0 for most APIs discussed and labels setContent() as 25.11.0. Confirm behavior against the version installed in your project.
