If a Font Awesome icon is missing from a Puppeteer PDF, first check whether it appears in the browser. If it is missing there too, investigate the icon name, installed Font Awesome version and plan, style prefix, Kit subset, and loaded CSS and webfonts. If it appears on screen but not in the PDF, check print-specific styles: page.pdf() uses print media by default. Verify that the relevant resources load before changing wait behavior; Puppeteer already waits for fonts by default when generating a PDF.
Start by separating a Font Awesome problem from a PDF problem
Render the affected page in a regular browser and compare it with the PDF generated from the same page, using the same application build and assets. This simple comparison tells you which branch to investigate:
- Missing in both browser and PDF: the likely issue is Font Awesome configuration or asset delivery. Check the icon’s availability, name, style prefix, Kit configuration, stylesheet, webfont files, and installed versions.
- Visible in the browser, missing or changed in the PDF: focus on print media rules and whether CSS and font resources finish loading in Puppeteer’s environment.
Do not start by adding arbitrary delays or replacing every icon class. First find out whether the icon fails before PDF generation or only when the page is rendered for printing.
If the icon is missing in the browser
Confirm the icon exists in your installed version and plan
Check the exact icon name against the Font Awesome version installed by the application, and confirm that the project’s plan includes that icon. Availability can depend on whether the project uses Free, Pro, or Pro+ assets. An icon name that is valid in a different release or plan may not be available in the files actually served by your application.

Also check the markup’s style prefix against the icon style being loaded. A name alone is not enough: the page needs the matching Font Awesome CSS and a class prefix that refers to the intended style. Inspect the rendered element and the styles applied to it rather than assuming the HTML is correct because another page or environment shows the icon.
Check Kit configuration and duplicate versions
If you use a Font Awesome Kit, confirm that the Kit includes the icon and style your page requests. An incomplete subset can make an icon unavailable even when the markup looks plausible. Look for multiple Font Awesome versions loaded together as well: a second stylesheet or package can override styles or provide a different set of icons than the markup expects.
Keep the application CSS, icon markup, Kit or package configuration, and installed version aligned. Font Awesome specifically warns that downgrading after adopting v7-specific features can cause missing icons or styling. If you recently changed versions, check for v7-specific markup or styling that the currently installed release does not provide.
Verify self-hosted CSS and webfonts
With a self-hosted WebFonts+CSS setup, both the stylesheet files and the webfont assets must be available. Font Awesome’s setup uses a css directory and a webfonts directory; include the core styling and the CSS for the styles in use, and ensure stylesheet font paths resolve to the installed webfont files.
In browser developer tools, inspect the network requests for the Font Awesome CSS and font files. A stylesheet that loads successfully does not prove its referenced font files did. Check the requested paths, response status, and any browser console errors. If the CSS points at a path that is valid on a developer’s machine but not in the deployed environment, fix the asset path or deployment rather than adding a Puppeteer delay.

If the icon works on screen but disappears in the PDF
Check print media rules first
Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() generates output using print CSS media by default. A page can therefore look correct in a normal browser tab and still produce a different PDF. Search the stylesheets for @media print rules and inspect whether they hide the icon, change its display, override its font family or weight, or alter a parent element in a way that removes it.
If the intended PDF should use the screen stylesheet rather than print styles, select screen media before generating the PDF:
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf', printBackground: true });
Use this only when screen styling is the desired output. If the PDF is meant to reflect the site’s print layout, keep print media enabled and correct the print rules that affect the icon. Changing media type can alter the whole document, not just Font Awesome.

Compare the same page in both modes, keeping the URL, build, viewport, and loaded assets fixed. Check these three axes:
- Media: does the icon disappear only under print media, or is it absent under screen media too?
- Delivery: are the Font Awesome files self-hosted, or provided through a Kit, and do the needed requests succeed in the Puppeteer run?
- Configuration: do the installed version and style match the icon markup and prefix?
This comparison narrows the fix to rendering mode, asset delivery, or Font Awesome configuration without changing unrelated parts of the page.

Verify readiness without adding waits blindly
Puppeteer’s PDF guide states: “By default, the Page.pdf() waits for fonts to be loaded.” That means an extra font wait is not a universal repair for missing Font Awesome icons. It does not establish that the correct stylesheet and webfont loaded successfully, nor does it fix a bad path, an unavailable icon, or print CSS that hides the element.
Make navigation wait for an appropriate readiness condition, then generate the PDF and inspect actual resource errors. Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before calling page.pdf(). Network-idle is one readiness choice, not proof that every required asset succeeded; review browser console and network errors for the CSS and font files in the affected run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMinimal Puppeteer flow to reproduce the issue
This example captures a page using print media, Puppeteer’s PDF default. Replace the URL and output path with those for your application.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.on('console', message => console.log('PAGE:', message.type(), message.text()));
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
console.error('REQUEST FAILED:', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf', printBackground: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Use the logged failures and browser developer tools to establish whether the CSS or webfont request failed. The example does not add a fixed sleep: a delay cannot repair an incorrect path, missing Kit entry, or print rule. If your page needs an application-specific readiness condition, wait for that condition rather than assuming that one generic delay fits every site.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page as a screenshot or PDF rather than diagnose your own Puppeteer rendering pipeline, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its cleanup can accept cookie and consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures the supplied page as a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The icon is absent in both the browser and PDF | Icon availability, name, prefix, Kit subset, CSS, webfont path, or conflicting versions | Confirm the icon and style are available in the installed version and plan; inspect loaded CSS and font requests. |
| The icon appears on screen but not in the PDF | Print media rules or print-specific overrides | Inspect @media print; use emulateMediaType('screen') only if screen styling is intended for the PDF. |
| The Font Awesome CSS loads but the icon remains missing | Referenced webfont path, icon/style mismatch, or subset configuration | Inspect font requests and applied styles; check that the CSS references deployed webfont files and the Kit contains the requested icon. |
| The issue began after a version change | Markup, styles, or package version no longer agree | Check for duplicate versions and v7-specific features after a downgrade; align the installed files with the markup. |
| An added wait does not change the result | Wait timing may not be the cause | Check actual request failures and print CSS. A wait cannot supply an unavailable icon or correct a broken asset path. |
What to capture when escalating a hard-to-reproduce case
If the checks above do not isolate the cause, collect the details from the environment that creates the PDF. That makes it possible to distinguish configuration errors from differences between local browser rendering and the target runtime:
- The installed Font Awesome package or Kit configuration and version, plus the relevant icon markup and style prefix.
- Whether the icon renders in the browser before PDF generation, and whether the PDF uses print or screen media.
- The CSS and webfont request URLs and their outcomes in the Puppeteer run, along with relevant console errors.
- The print stylesheet rules that apply to the icon and its parent elements.
- The Puppeteer navigation readiness condition and the code path that calls
page.pdf().
Those details are more useful than an isolated PDF screenshot because they show whether the failure is in Font Awesome setup, resource delivery, or the print-rendering path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer need an extra font wait before every PDF?
No. Puppeteer’s PDF guide says Page.pdf() waits for fonts by default. Check whether the required CSS and font files actually load before adding waits.
Recommended Free Tools
Will switching to screen media always restore a missing icon?
No. It changes which stylesheet rules apply. It helps only when print-specific styling is the cause and screen styling is acceptable for the PDF.
Can a Free Font Awesome setup contain an icon that is unavailable to it?
Yes. Icon availability can depend on the installed version and plan, so verify entitlement and the configured icon set before changing Puppeteer.
