To capture a website in dark mode, first make the page render a dark theme, then use a screenshot tool to record the rendered result. A screenshot does not switch a site to dark mode by itself. Enable the site’s dark-theme control or a dark color preference, verify that the page content—not only the browser controls—is dark, and then capture the visible area, a selected element, or the entire page.
The most reliable workflow is to use the website’s own theme when possible. A site must implement dark styling, commonly by responding to the prefers-color-scheme CSS media feature, which detects a light or dark preference requested by the user. See MDN’s prefers-color-scheme reference.
What dark-mode screenshot capture actually involves
There are two separate operations:
- Rendering: the website chooses dark colors through its own theme switch or by responding to the browser or operating system’s dark preference.
- Capture: a browser tool, extension, or screenshot API saves whatever the browser rendered.
The CSS prefers-color-scheme feature lets authors detect whether a user requested a light or dark theme. However, setting a dark preference cannot force a site that has no dark styles to become a readable dark page. The MDN color-scheme reference explains that browser surfaces can follow a color scheme while page authors still need to style their content. Forced dark treatments can produce inverted images, unreadable text, or sections that remain light.
Prepare the page before taking the screenshot
1. Use the site’s own dark-theme control
Look for a moon icon, a Light/Dark/System menu, or an appearance setting in the site header or account preferences. This is usually the most faithful result because the site can adjust text, borders, illustrations, charts, and images intentionally. If the site offers a “system” option, select it only after your browser or operating system is set to dark.

2. Set a dark preference when the site follows it
Some pages automatically follow the browser or operating system preference through prefers-color-scheme. Change that preference to dark using your platform’s current appearance settings, then reload the page if the theme does not update immediately. Menu names and locations differ by operating system, browser, device, and version, so use the current vendor instructions for your setup rather than assuming one universal path.
3. Confirm the content itself changed
Check the article background, navigation, cards, forms, code blocks, and footer. A dark browser toolbar does not prove the page is dark. If the page remains light, it may not support the preference. A forced-dark extension can be a workaround, but it is not guaranteed to preserve the author’s intended colors or contrast.
Choose the right capture method
| Method | Capture extent | Output and availability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox built-in screenshot | Region, element, visible area, or full page | Image download; built into Firefox | Fast, faithful browser capture without an extension |
| Microsoft Edge Screenshot | Entire webpage, including content beyond the viewport | Availability and behavior vary by device, market, and browser version | Full-page capture in supported Edge installations |
| Screenshot extension | Depends on the extension; GoFullPage lists full-page capture | GoFullPage listing describes PNG, JPG, and PDF export; review current permissions before installing | When built-in tools lack the required extent or format |
| ScreenshotNeo API | Viewport, full page, CSS-selected element, and more | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from an HTTP request | Automated, repeatable captures and developer workflows |
Capture a dark-mode page in Firefox
Firefox includes a screenshot tool that can save a selected region, an element, the visible viewport, or the complete page.
- Open the page and enable its dark theme, or set a dark preference that the page supports.
- Verify that the page content is dark and that text remains readable.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. See Firefox Help’s screenshot instructions.
- Choose the capture target. Select a region by dragging, click an element to capture it, choose Save visible for the current viewport, or choose Save full page to include content below the fold.
- Download the image, then open it independently and inspect the result.
For a long page, full-page capture may include content that was not visible in the initial viewport. Check lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, and embedded widgets because their appearance can differ while the browser scrolls through the page.

Microsoft documents an Edge Screenshot feature that can capture an entire webpage, including content extending beyond the screen. Availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version; if the command is absent, update Edge or use another method.
- Open the page and switch the site to dark mode, if supported.
- Confirm that the page—not only Edge’s interface—uses the intended dark colors.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot feature using the current command shown in your installation.
- Choose the option for the entire webpage rather than only the visible area.
- Save the result and inspect the top, middle, and bottom of the file for clipped content, light sections, or overlays.
Microsoft describes the capability as capturing “an entire webpage in a single screenshot—even content that extends beyond your screen.” See Microsoft’s Edge Screenshot page for the current feature details.
Use an extension when built-in capture is not enough
An extension can help when you need a particular file format, a repeatable full-page workflow, or a browser that lacks a suitable built-in command. The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing describes full-page capture with PNG, JPG, and PDF output.
- Review the extension’s current permissions, publisher information, update history, and privacy disclosures before installing.
- Keep the site in its intended dark mode before starting the capture.
- Use the extension’s full-page command, wait for it to finish scrolling, and export the format you need.
- Open the exported file; do not assume a successful download means every lazy-loaded image or overlay was captured correctly.
An extension that forces dark colors is different from a capture extension. It may alter the page before the screenshot and can change contrast, logos, photographs, or code colors. Treat that output as a visual workaround, not as proof of how the site’s author designed dark mode.

Or skip the browser setup: capture dark mode with ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Set the requested dark appearance, then capture a page through one HTTP request. Its dark-mode option, full-page capture, custom viewport and device settings, retina scale, element selection, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, wait conditions, hidden selectors, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agents, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, asynchronous jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture, usage reporting, and PDF controls let you reproduce a capture consistently in code.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and the complete option list. The examples below use the required endpoint and return a WebP file.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture and add the documented dark-mode, full-page, viewport, output, wait, or selector parameters your workflow needs. Keep API keys server-side; do not expose them in browser JavaScript or public HTML.

Why ScreenshotNeo is useful for dark-mode automation
- It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - The MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Yearly billing gives two months free.

Make full-page dark captures reliable
Wait for the theme and content
A page can initially render light HTML and apply dark CSS a moment later. Wait for a stable selector, a deliberate delay, or network idle before capturing. For pages that lazy-load images, use full-page capture and confirm that images appear in the output.
Control the viewport and scale
Choose a viewport matching the audience or device you need to document. A narrow mobile viewport can trigger a different responsive layout, while retina scale affects image sharpness and file size. Record these settings with the screenshot if you need reproducible visual comparisons.
Remove obstructing UI deliberately
Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, sticky headers, and ads can hide content or create inconsistent captures. In a browser, dismiss them before capturing. In an automated workflow, hide known selectors or use a cleanup feature, while preserving any content that is part of the page you intend to document.
Choose image or PDF intentionally
PNG preserves sharp text and transparent areas; JPEG is smaller but introduces compression; WebP often reduces size while retaining good quality. PDF is useful for printing or page-range workflows, but pagination can split sections differently from a single tall image.
Check the saved screenshot before sharing
- Inspect the header, a middle section, and the final footer.
- Confirm that text, links, borders, charts, and code blocks have sufficient contrast.
- Look for unexpected light panels caused by components that do not honor the dark preference.
- Check that images are not missing, stretched, or inverted.
- Look for cookie notices, chat widgets, sticky controls, and browser-scroll artifacts.
- Verify the file opens in the target app and has the expected dimensions and format.
Troubleshooting dark-mode captures
The screenshot is still light
The site may not implement dark styling, or its theme switch may require a reload. Use the site’s own control first, reload after changing the supported preference, and treat forced-dark rendering as an approximation.

Only the browser chrome is dark
Browser controls can follow a color scheme independently of page content. Check the page background and components; if they remain light, the site has not responded to the preference.
The full-page image is clipped
Try the browser’s explicit full-page command rather than visible-area capture. For automated captures, wait for the page to settle, allow lazy images to load, and check for fixed-position elements that interfere during scrolling.
Images or embedded content are missing
Some resources load only after scrolling, require authentication, block automation, or depend on a specific referrer, cookie, or user agent. Capture an authorized page, supply the required request context in an API workflow, and wait for a selector or network idle before saving.

Forced color transformations can conflict with author styles. Disable the forced treatment and use the site’s native theme when available; otherwise review the screenshot manually and avoid presenting it as the site’s official dark design.
Edge’s Screenshot command is unavailable
Microsoft notes that availability and behavior vary by device, market, and browser version. Use the current Edge documentation, update the browser where permitted, or switch to Firefox, an extension, or an API.
Best Value
An API request returns an error or an unexpected page
Check the URL encoding, API key, timeout, authentication requirements, and response headers. Use a longer wait or a selector-based wait for pages that render asynchronously. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean capture from a blocked, blank, timed-out, failed, or cached result.
Which approach should you use?
- One-off visible or selected capture: use Firefox’s built-in tool.
- One-off full-page capture in Edge: use Edge Screenshot if it is available in your installation.
- PNG, JPG, or PDF export from Chrome: consider GoFullPage after reviewing its current permissions.
- Repeatable builds, documentation, testing, bulk URLs, or AI-agent workflows: use ScreenshotNeo, which combines dark-mode and capture controls with clean-shot billing and an MCP server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does dark mode work on every website?
No. The site must provide dark styling or respond to a dark preference. A browser or operating-system dark setting alone cannot guarantee a dark page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I capture only one component instead of the whole page?
Yes. Firefox can capture a selected element, and ScreenshotNeo can target an element by CSS selector.
Should I use PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF?
Use PNG for sharp text or transparency, JPEG for smaller photographic files, WebP for efficient web delivery, and PDF when pagination or printing matters.
Is a forced-dark extension the same as a native dark theme?
No. Forced rendering changes colors after or alongside the page’s styles and may reduce fidelity or contrast. A native site theme is preferable.
