If Google Charts displays “Your browser does not support charts” in Puppeteer, first check whether your code overrides the page’s user-agent. In one Stack Overflow report about this exact message, removing a custom user-agent fixed the problem. That is a reported cause—not a universal diagnosis. If it does not apply, verify that the Google Charts package has loaded before drawing, then inspect JavaScript errors, failed requests, and any iframe or domain-access assumptions.

Start with the user-agent override

Search your Puppeteer setup and application code for a user-agent override, especially page.setUserAgent() or a wrapper that sets the same browser option. For a diagnostic run, remove the override and compare the chart with the same page and data. A Stack Overflow report dated August 4, 2022, describing this exact Puppeteer error, says removing the custom user-agent resolved that user’s instance. The report does not establish a required universal user-agent string, so do not substitute an arbitrary one and assume it is the fix.

If you need a custom user-agent for another reason, use a controlled comparison: render once without the override, then restore it and render again. Keep the page, chart code, data, and other browser settings unchanged. This isolates whether the override is relevant without attributing a change to several variables at once.

Make sure the chart package is loaded before drawing

Google Charts loads its library and requested chart packages asynchronously. A Puppeteer page’s general navigation event does not, by itself, confirm that a particular chart package has finished loading. Google’s documented pattern is to load https://www.gstatic.com/charts/loader.js, request the package, and draw only after the load callback runs or the Promise returned by google.charts.load() resolves.

Here is a minimal page using Google’s documented callback pattern. It draws a basic column chart with the corechart package:

<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <script src="https://www.gstatic.com/charts/loader.js"></script>
  <script>
    google.charts.load('current', { packages: ['corechart'] });
    google.charts.setOnLoadCallback(drawChart);

    function drawChart() {
      const data = google.visualization.arrayToDataTable([
        ['Browser', 'Visits'],
        ['Chrome', 12],
        ['Firefox', 8],
        ['Safari', 5]
      ]);
      const chart = new google.visualization.ColumnChart(
        document.getElementById('chart')
      );
      chart.draw(data, { title: 'Visits by browser' });
    }
  </script>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="chart" style="width: 800px; height: 450px"></div>
</body>
</html>

This is an adaptation of Google’s general loader guidance, not a verified reproduction of the reported Puppeteer failure. If your own chart code runs before the callback, move the drawing work into the callback or chain it to the load Promise. The official Google for Developers “Load the Libraries” guide says to register a callback with google.charts.setOnLoadCallback() or chain .then() to the Promise returned by google.charts.load().

Wait for a chart-specific signal in Puppeteer

When rendering a page you control, expose a signal after drawing completes, then wait for that signal rather than assuming navigation completion means the chart is ready. For example, set a global flag at the end of drawChart() and wait for it from Puppeteer:

// Add at the end of drawChart() in the page:
window.chartReady = true;

// Puppeteer (Node.js):
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/chart.html', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
    });
    await page.waitForFunction(() => window.chartReady === true, {
      timeout: 30000
    });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace the local example URL with your chart page. The wait condition is application-specific: it works only if your page sets window.chartReady after a successful draw. If the flag never appears, Puppeteer’s timeout tells you the expected signal was not reached; it does not identify whether the loader, chart code, data, or a network request caused the failure.

Collect browser errors and failed requests

If removing a user-agent override and correcting the load sequence do not resolve the message, collect evidence from the page instead of changing browser flags at random. A JavaScript exception can interrupt chart setup, and a failed request can prevent the loader or data from arriving. Puppeteer’s page event handlers are a practical way to see those failures:

page.on('console', message => {
  console.log(`[browser ${message.type()}] ${message.text()}`);
});
page.on('pageerror', error => {
  console.error('[page exception]', error);
});
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
  console.error('[request failed]', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
});
page.on('response', response => {
  if (!response.ok()) {
    console.error('[HTTP error]', response.status(), response.url());
  }
});

Attach these listeners before navigating so that early loader or script failures are not missed. Look for the first relevant exception or failed resource, not just the final chart message. A failure involving the loader, a package, application script, or data endpoint points to a different investigation than an iframe access exception. These handlers are diagnostic instrumentation; they are not a source-established universal fix.

Check iframe and domain-access assumptions

A separate, historical Google Visualization API discussion from 2011 describes the same visible message in a case where access to an iframe’s document raised an “Access denied” exception. That discussion involved a page setting document.domain across frames. Treat it as a possible legacy or application-specific cause, not as evidence that current Google Charts pages generally require this setting or that changing it is a standard repair.

If your chart runs inside an iframe, check which frame owns the chart and whether your code tries to read or manipulate another frame’s document. Browser same-origin rules can constrain access across frames. Use the console exception and the frame’s actual origin to guide the investigation; do not weaken browser security settings merely because the chart message mentions browser support.

Use this diagnostic sequence

  1. Remove any user-agent override for one test. Search for page.setUserAgent() and equivalent configuration. Compare the result without changing other inputs.
  2. Confirm the loader and package sequence. Load the Google Charts loader, request the package your chart uses, and start drawing only in the callback or after the load Promise resolves.
  3. Wait for your own completion condition. Have the page signal that drawing finished and make Puppeteer wait for that signal, rather than treating navigation as proof the chart is ready.
  4. Capture console, exception, and request failures. Find the earliest useful error and determine whether it concerns loading, chart code, data, or frame access.
  5. Compare Chrome and Puppeteer with matched inputs. Keep the same page, user-agent, chart code, and data, then change one variable at a time. This is a disciplined debugging method, not a guarantee that the two environments behave identically.

Do not assume a browser flag or version change is the answer

The matching Stack Overflow question mentions trying headless and non-headless runs; its answer points to the custom user-agent, and disabling web security did not solve that user’s case. That one report does not show that headless mode is inherently incompatible with Google Charts, nor does it establish a browser-flag fix. Avoid disabling security protections as a first-line response: it can change the behavior you are trying to diagnose without addressing the actual cause.

Google’s release notes describe loader choices including current, upcoming, and frozen version numbers, and direct developers to the gstatic loader rather than the older jsapi loader. They do not connect switching versions to this particular Puppeteer error. Use the loader guidance appropriate to your application, but treat a version change as a separate controlled test—not as a demonstrated fix for this message.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page that already renders correctly, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It cannot repair a Google Charts load error or make a broken chart render; the page still needs to work. For a page that does render, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

What to conclude from the error

The visible “Your browser does not support charts” message is not enough to identify the root cause. The most directly relevant report found a custom user-agent override; Google’s loader documentation establishes that chart packages must finish loading before use; and a much older discussion records a distinct iframe-access case. Test those paths in that order, use the browser’s actual errors to narrow the cause, and keep historical or anecdotal examples in proportion to their evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the error prove Puppeteer or headless Chrome is unsupported?

No. The cited material does not establish that claim. The directly matching report attributes that instance to a custom user-agent override, while the other documented paths involve asynchronous loading and a historical iframe-access issue.

Will disabling web security fix the message?

There is no evidence here for that as a general fix. In the matching Stack Overflow report, disabling web security did not resolve the author’s case; use console errors and frame details to diagnose an access problem instead.
