In Windows-targeted .NET code, the simplest way to save an image is Image.Save with a destination path and an explicit format:
using System.Drawing;
using System.Drawing.Imaging;
using var image = Image.FromFile("input.jpg");
image.Save("output.png", ImageFormat.Png);
This loads input.jpg, encodes it as PNG, and writes a new file. The same API can write to a stream, while WPF uses BitmapEncoder. For .NET 6 and later, remember that System.Drawing.Common is Windows-only; use a cross-platform library for Linux or macOS.
Choose the image API before writing code
Your correct implementation depends on the application type and operating system.

Save an image to a file with System.Drawing
Basic path-based save
For a Windows-targeted project, reference System.Drawing.Common, import System.Drawing and System.Drawing.Imaging, and save to a different destination path:
#1 Best Overall
using System.Drawing;
using System.Drawing.Imaging;
string inputPath = "input.jpg";
string outputPath = "output.png";
using var image = Image.FromFile(inputPath);
image.Save(outputPath, ImageFormat.Png);
The explicit ImageFormat.Png argument controls the output format; the filename extension alone should not be treated as the encoder selection. The supported simple choices include ImageFormat.Png, ImageFormat.Jpeg, ImageFormat.Bmp, and ImageFormat.Gif.
Use a new destination
Do not save back to the file from which the image was loaded. Microsoft documents that saving to the same file can corrupt the data or raise an exception. Write to a separate path, then replace the original only after a successful save if your workflow requires an overwrite.
Image.FromFile keeps the source file associated with the image until the image is disposed. The using declaration in the example releases that handle deterministically, which is especially important when processing many files.
Pick the right format
| Format | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | You need lossless output, sharp UI artwork, or transparency. | Photographs are often larger than equivalent JPEG files. |
| JPEG | The image is photographic and lossy compression is acceptable. | It does not preserve transparency and repeated saves can reduce quality. |
| BMP | An uncompressed Windows bitmap is specifically required. | Files are generally large. |
| GIF | You need the GIF format and its limited color model. | It is not a general replacement for PNG or JPEG photographs. |
Control JPEG quality with an encoder
The convenience overload cannot set JPEG quality. Find the JPEG codec and pass an EncoderParameters object:

var jpegCodec = ImageCodecInfo.GetImageEncoders()
.First(codec => codec.FormatID == ImageFormat.Jpeg.Guid);
using var parameters = new EncoderParameters(1);
parameters.Param[0] = new EncoderParameter(Encoder.Quality, 85L);
image.Save("photo.jpg", jpegCodec, parameters);
The value 85L is an encoder setting, not a universal quality guarantee. Choose a value appropriate for your visual and file-size requirements, and inspect representative output from your own images.

Save an image to a MemoryStream
Use the stream overload when another component needs bytes instead of a file, such as an HTTP response, database field, or object-storage upload:
using System.Drawing;
using System.Drawing.Imaging;
using System.IO;
using var image = Image.FromFile("input.jpg");
using var output = new MemoryStream();
image.Save(output, ImageFormat.Png);
byte[] bytes = output.ToArray();
The destination stream must start at offset zero. If you reuse a stream, set output.Position = 0 before saving. Do not save into the stream that was used to construct the image; Microsoft warns that this can corrupt data or throw an exception. Likewise, never use the source file itself as the output destination.
Return a stream without disposing it too early
If a method returns a stream rather than a byte array, dispose the decoded image and leave the output stream open for the caller:
using System.Drawing;
using System.Drawing.Imaging;
using System.IO;
static MemoryStream ConvertToPng(string path)
{
using var image = Image.FromFile(path);
var result = new MemoryStream();
image.Save(result, ImageFormat.Png);
result.Position = 0;
return result;
}
The caller owns the returned MemoryStream and should dispose it after sending or reading the bytes.
Save images in WPF
WPF images are commonly represented by BitmapSource or another BitmapSource-derived object. Use a matching encoder, add a frame, and write it to a file:
using System.IO;
using System.Windows.Media.Imaging;
static void SavePng(BitmapSource bitmapSource, string path)
{
var encoder = new PngBitmapEncoder();
encoder.Frames.Add(BitmapFrame.Create(bitmapSource));
using var file = File.Create(path);
encoder.Save(file);
}
static void SaveJpeg(BitmapSource bitmapSource, string path, int quality)
{
var encoder = new JpegBitmapEncoder
{
QualityLevel = quality
};
encoder.Frames.Add(BitmapFrame.Create(bitmapSource));
using var file = File.Create(path);
encoder.Save(file);
}
quality for JpegBitmapEncoder is an integer quality level accepted by WPF. PNG encoding is lossless; JPEG encoding is lossy and does not carry transparency.
System.Drawing on .NET 6 and later: the platform boundary
Microsoft states that the System.Drawing.Common package is a Windows-specific library. In .NET 6 and later it is supported only on Windows. The temporary Unix compatibility switch was removed in .NET 7, so enabling that switch is not a durable Linux or macOS strategy.

A production-safe file-save checklist
- Resolve and validate the input path before opening it.
- Choose the output format explicitly rather than relying on an extension.
- Write to a new destination, not the source file.
- Create the output directory before saving and handle permission failures.
- Use
usingdeclarations for images, codecs, encoder parameters, and file streams. - For streams, start at offset zero and reset the position before returning the stream.
- For large batches, process one image at a time and dispose each image before moving to the next.
- Validate the resulting file or byte array before deleting or replacing the source.
Troubleshoot common save failures
“Parameter is not valid”
This broad ArgumentException often means the input is invalid, the destination is unavailable, the stream position is wrong, or the source and destination are the same. Confirm that the input decodes, the destination directory exists, the output stream starts at zero, and the destination is different.
The output file is locked
Dispose the Image created by Image.FromFile. In a loop, avoid retaining references to previous images. A using declaration around every decode/save operation releases the source handle at the end of each iteration.
PNG or JPEG output has the wrong appearance
Check the encoder you passed. PNG preserves lossless pixels and transparency; JPEG discards transparency and applies lossy compression. If JPEG size or visual quality matters, use the codec overload and set Encoder.Quality.

It works on Windows but fails in Linux or macOS
This is expected for modern System.Drawing.Common. Move the image operation to a supported Windows process or migrate the image code to a cross-platform library such as ImageSharp, SkiaSharp, Aspose.Drawing, or Microsoft.Maui.Graphics.
Memory usage grows during batch processing
Dispose each decoded image and output stream as soon as its operation completes. Avoid keeping every byte[] in a list; upload or process each result before reading the next image when your design allows it.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Encoding work is CPU- and memory-intensive, especially for large photographs or high-resolution PNG files. Select the output format that matches the consumer instead of converting everything to PNG. For web responses, stream or upload the result rather than unnecessarily making multiple copies of the same byte array.
File saves can fail because of missing directories, permissions, locked files, invalid paths, or insufficient storage. Treat the save as an operation that can fail: log the input and destination (without exposing secrets), preserve the original until the new file is complete, and report a useful error to the caller. The .NET APIs do not provide a universal benchmark for your images or hardware, so measure representative files in your deployment environment.

Or skip the browser setup: capture a website with ScreenshotNeo
If the “image” you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a local bitmap, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET endpoint that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One-call examples
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Beyond the basic call, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatible parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save the same decoded image in more than one format?
Yes. Keep the decoded image open, call Save once for each different destination and explicit format, and dispose the image after all saves finish. Never use the source file itself as one of those destinations.
Should an ASP.NET endpoint return a MemoryStream or a byte array?
Either can work. A byte array is simple for small results; a stream avoids an additional abstraction when the framework can copy it directly. In both cases, complete the save before returning and ensure the object that owns the stream is disposed by the caller.
Is ScreenshotNeo the same as converting a Bitmap with Image.Save?
No. Image.Save encodes an image already in your process. ScreenshotNeo renders a URL remotely and returns a screenshot or PDF, so it is useful when the source is a web page rather than an existing bitmap.
