To change an HTML file to JPG, render the page and save the resulting pixels as a JPEG. A browser screenshot is usually PNG, so a separate JPEG conversion is required unless your renderer supports JPG directly. For a one-off conversion, Chrome Headless plus an image converter is dependable; for a direct command-line JPG, use wkhtmltoimage if the installed build supports JPEG output. Automated projects can use Spatie Browsershot with Puppeteer and headless Chrome.
Choose the right conversion method
| Situation | Recommended route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| One page, no coding | Open the file in a browser and capture it, then convert PNG to JPG | Browser capture is normally PNG; page length and viewport need planning |
| Command-line JPG output | wkhtmltoimage with a JPG format option |
Rendering uses Qt WebKit and may differ from a current browser |
| Repeated PHP jobs | Spatie Browsershot (Puppeteer and headless Chrome) | Requires PHP, Node.js, Puppeteer and a Chrome/Chromium installation |
| Hosted, repeatable API workflow | ScreenshotNeo | Requires an API key and an internet-accessible target unless your deployment exposes the page |
First decide whether you need a viewport shot (what fits in a browser window) or a full-page image (the entire document). The viewport, device scale, crop, and page state determine what appears in the JPG.
Method 1: Open the HTML file and convert a screenshot
Render the local file
- Put the HTML file and its assets in a predictable folder. Use relative paths such as
css/site.cssandimages/logo.png. - Open the file in Chrome or another modern browser with
file:///absolute/path/page.html, or drag it into a browser window. - Set the window to the required width. Responsive layouts can change substantially at different widths.
- Use the browser’s screenshot facility or an operating-system capture tool. Save the result as PNG.
Convert PNG to JPG
Open the PNG in an image editor and choose Export or Save As, select JPEG/JPG, and set a quality level. JPEG has no transparency: transparent pixels must be composited against a background color first. For text-heavy pages, retain the PNG when possible because JPEG compression can create halos around small type.
Capture with Chrome Headless
Chrome’s documented command-line screenshot flag writes screenshot.png in the current directory. A typical local-file command is:

- Preserve Vector Graphics When Converting
google-chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot --window-size=1440,1200 file:///absolute/path/page.html
On systems where the executable is named differently, use chromium, chromium-browser, or your installed Chrome path. Convert the generated PNG with your image editor or a utility such as ImageMagick:
magick screenshot.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -quality 88 page.jpg
The browser runs page scripts before capture. If the page is still loading, add a timeout or a deliberate wait appropriate to your Chrome build, then inspect the result rather than assuming asynchronous content appeared.
Method 2: Create a JPG directly with wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage is a headless command-line HTML renderer. Its command-line reference supports input and output paths, format selection, screen width, and crop controls. Check your installed binary because packaged versions expose different options.
Basic command
wkhtmltoimage --format jpg input.html output.jpg
Use an absolute path when the working directory is uncertain. To see the options supported by your installation:

Control width and crop
Set a browser-like width when the page uses responsive CSS. Option names can vary by build, but commonly include a screen-width setting and crop dimensions. Confirm the exact spelling in --help before scripting. A crop that is too narrow can clip content; a full-page capture can produce a very tall JPG that is awkward to print or upload.

Allow local resources safely
Local CSS, images, fonts, and scripts may be blocked by local-file security settings. The Debian manual documents an allow-path option. Prefer allowing only the directory that contains the page and its assets rather than disabling local-file protections globally. For example, verify whether your build accepts a form such as:
wkhtmltoimage --allow /absolute/path/site --format jpg /absolute/path/site/input.html output.jpg
If an option is rejected, consult that binary’s help and package documentation; do not copy flags between unrelated builds without checking.
Method 3: Automate with Spatie Browsershot
Browsershot wraps Puppeteer and headless Chrome for scripted captures. It accepts a local HTML file path and can write an image or PDF according to the output path. A minimal PHP example is:
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('file:///absolute/path/page.html')
->windowSize(1440, 1200)
->save('output.png');
Convert the resulting PNG to JPG with your image library, or configure the surrounding workflow to perform that conversion. Your project needs the Browsershot package, a compatible Node.js/Puppeteer installation, and a runnable Chrome or Chromium binary. Keep those versions pinned in CI so a browser update does not silently alter layout.
Local HTML details
- Use a
file://URL with an absolute path, or serve the directory through a local HTTP server when scripts require fetch/XHR. - Make sure the process user can read every stylesheet, image, font, and script.
- Wait for application-specific selectors or network completion before saving when content is injected dynamically.
Prepare the HTML so the JPG is complete
Make asset paths portable
Relative paths resolve from the document location, not from the shell’s current directory. Check case sensitivity on Linux, URL-encode spaces, and include web fonts locally if the conversion machine has no network access.

Freeze dynamic content
Animations, rotating banners, clocks, ads, cookie dialogs, and chat launchers can change between runs. Hide or disable them with print-oriented CSS, a dedicated capture mode, or renderer options. Wait until the selector containing the final content exists.
Pick dimensions deliberately
For a dashboard, use a fixed viewport and possibly a high device scale. For a document, full-page capture may create a very tall image; splitting into pages or producing PDF can be more practical. Check that long words, tables, and fixed-position elements are not clipped at the chosen width.

Check color and transparency
JPEG stores lossy RGB pixels. Set an explicit background color if the HTML relies on transparency, and inspect gradients, small text, and fine lines after export.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a GET-based screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF and offers full-page capture, element selection, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, CSS and JavaScript, click and wait controls, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and a usage API. Its parameter names also accept those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.
Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A direct JPEG request with cURL is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Change the URL to the page you need and choose the output extension or documented format parameter for your workflow. Equivalent examples:

The output is blank
Confirm the input URL/path, file permissions, and that the renderer can read local assets. Serve the folder over HTTP if browser security blocks scripts or fetch requests. For an API, inspect the HTTP status and page-verdict headers.
Styles or images are missing
Fix relative paths, filename case, font availability, and local-file allow rules. Open the same file in the target renderer, not only in your development browser.

JavaScript content is absent
Wait for the application’s completion selector or a suitable delay. A screenshot taken before hydration or an API response will faithfully capture an incomplete page.
The page is clipped
Increase viewport width, use full-page capture, or adjust crop settings. Check fixed headers and overflow containers, which can hide content even when the document is tall enough.
Best Value
- Convert JPG, JPEG & PNG to PDF
- Select multiple images
JPEG quality looks poor
Raise JPEG quality, resize down only after rendering at a sufficient scale, or retain PNG for diagrams and small typography.
Chrome works but wkhtmltoimage does not
Older Qt WebKit engines may not support newer CSS or JavaScript. Use Chrome/Browsershot for modern browser fidelity, or simplify the page and verify the output at the exact renderer version used in production.
Quality and reliability checklist
- Confirm viewport versus full-page intent.
- Wait for fonts, images, and dynamic data.
- Verify local-file permissions and asset paths.
- Inspect the top, middle, and bottom of long pages.
- Check text, transparency, color, and JPEG artifacts at 100% zoom.
- Record renderer and browser versions for reproducible automation.
- Handle non-success status codes and save failures in scripts.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rename an HTML file to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes only the filename; a renderer must first create image pixels.
What is the simplest free approach?
Open the file in Chrome, capture a PNG, and export that image as JPEG.
Why is my Chrome screenshot not a JPG?
Chrome’s documented –screenshot output is screenshot.png. Convert that PNG to JPEG afterward.
Is a screenshot the same as printing HTML?
No. A screenshot captures rendered pixels at a viewport or full-page size; printing uses pagination and print layout rules.
The Bottom Line
Render the page at the dimensions you need, verify every local and dynamic dependency, then export to JPEG. Use Chrome plus conversion for modern browser behavior, wkhtmltoimage for direct command-line JPG when its version supports the required options, Browsershot for PHP automation, or ScreenshotNeo when you want a hosted API without maintaining a browser setup.
