No single quality value guarantees a file under 100 KB: the result depends on the rendered pixels, page length, images, fonts, and the byte limit used by your destination.
What “HTML to JPG” actually means
HTML is markup, not an image file. To convert it, a browser must render the markup with its CSS, fonts, scripts, and image assets. You then export the rendered viewport, a selected element, or the entire scrollable page as a JPEG.
JPEG is opaque and lossy. It is suitable for photographs and normal web screenshots, but it cannot preserve transparency. Playwright’s omitBackground setting does not apply to JPEG output. If you need transparent pixels, use a format that supports alpha, such as PNG or WebP, and confirm that the receiving system accepts it.
Choose the capture area before optimizing

Decide what must remain readable at the destination’s display size. Capturing a whole long page and then shrinking it to a tiny image may technically satisfy the byte limit while making text unusable.

Reliable Playwright workflow
Playwright exposes JPEG screenshots, a quality value from 0 to 100, viewport/element/full-page capture, and scale: 'css'. The official API documents a JPEG default quality of 80 and describes CSS scaling as one output pixel per CSS pixel, which avoids extra high-DPI pixels. See the Playwright Page screenshot API.
Install Playwright
- Install a current Node.js release.
- In a new project, run
npm init -y. - Install Playwright with
npm install playwright. - Download a browser with
npx playwright install chromium.
Capture a rendered HTML file
Save this as html-to-jpg.js. It waits for the page to load, captures one CSS pixel per output pixel, and reports the actual byte count.

});Full-page capture may include lazy images that have not yet loaded. Wait for the relevant content, scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading when necessary, or use an application-specific readiness selector before taking the shot.
Iterate until the file is genuinely below 100 KB
- Export a first JPEG and inspect its byte count with your operating system or a script.
- If it is too large, lower quality in measured steps, such as 70, 60, 50, then 40.
- If quality reduction makes text or edges unacceptable, reduce the viewport or rendered element dimensions.
- Use
scale: 'css'when running on a high-DPI display or device. - Open the final file at its intended display size and check small text, charts, logos, and photos.
- Repeat after every meaningful layout, font, or content change.
“100 KB” may mean 100,000 bytes or 102,400 bytes (100 KiB). If a receiving system specifies a maximum byte value, use that exact value. If it does not, target comfortably below 100,000 bytes to allow for differing interpretations.
JPEG size is content-dependent. A flat, mostly white page compresses very differently from a photographic hero image or noisy background. The HTML Standard describes a quality value as a desired quality level for supported variable-quality formats; it does not define a universal file-size result. Quality, dimensions, and readability trade-offs
Lower JPEG quality
Reducing quality usually saves bytes while preserving the same pixel dimensions. At aggressive settings, photographs show blocking and ringing, while text can develop colored or fuzzy edges. Inspect the actual image rather than relying on the numeric setting.

Fewer pixels
Reducing viewport width, height, or element dimensions removes data before compression and can produce larger savings than quality changes. It also reduces legibility, so choose the smallest dimensions that fit the intended display.
CSS scaling
scale: 'css' prevents device-pixel-ratio multiplication. Without it, a 1200 CSS-pixel-wide page on a 2× display can produce roughly twice as many pixels in each direction, greatly increasing the file size.
Content and layout
Remove decorative backgrounds, oversized images, animation frames, and unused sections when they are not part of the required output. An element capture is preferable to shrinking a full page that contains irrelevant content.
Timing and rendering details that affect the result
- Fonts: Wait until web fonts are available; otherwise fallback fonts can change line wrapping and dimensions.
- Remote images: Ensure the browser can reach every asset. Missing images produce a different, often smaller, file.
- Dynamic content: Wait for a stable selector or application-ready signal rather than assuming
networkidlemeans the UI is complete. - Animations: Pause or disable animation if a deterministic frame is required.
- Color and transparency: JPEG composites against a background. Use PNG/WebP for alpha or crisp flat graphics when the destination permits.
Common problems and fixes
The output is still over 100 KB
Check the byte count first, then reduce quality and dimensions separately. A tall full-page image may need to become an element or viewport capture. Continue until the measured file, not an estimate, meets the threshold.

Text is unreadable
Restore some quality, increase the rendered dimensions, or capture only the relevant element. Do not solve a readability problem by repeatedly compressing a huge full-page image.
The screenshot is blank or missing images
Verify the URL, file permissions, network access, and browser console errors. Wait for a known content selector, and make sure relative asset paths work from the URL used by Playwright.
Fonts or layout differ from the browser preview
Load the same CSS and fonts, use the same viewport, and wait for font loading before capture. A different viewport can trigger responsive breakpoints.
Full-page capture is unexpectedly huge
Measure the document’s dimensions. Capture a component, use a smaller viewport, or apply CSS scaling. Long pages inherently contain many pixels.

Quality outside the accepted range
Playwright expects a JPEG quality number from 0 through 100. Pass a number, not a percentage string, and use type: 'jpeg' rather than relying on the output filename.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert raw HTML to JPG without opening a browser?
Not while preserving the page’s rendered appearance reliably. HTML, CSS, fonts, and scripts must be laid out by a rendering engine; an automated browser such as Playwright performs that step.
Does changing a .html filename to .jpg convert it?
No. Renaming changes only the extension. You must render the HTML and encode the rendered pixels as JPEG.
Should I use JPEG for screenshots containing mostly text?
JPEG can work, but it is lossy. If the destination accepts it, compare WebP or PNG when sharp text, flat graphics, or transparency matter more than the 100 KB requirement.
What is the best way to prove compliance with a size limit?
Measure the final file’s byte count after export and use the exact maximum specified by the receiving system.
