A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The fastest way to take a screenshot is to use your device’s built-in shortcut: Windows uses the Snipping Tool or Print Screen, Mac uses Command-Shift shortcuts, iPhone uses its side and volume or Home buttons, and Android usually uses Power plus Volume Down. Afterward, open the preview or saved image to crop, annotate, save, or share it.
This guide explains the exact steps for current Windows 10/11 PCs, Macs, iPhones, and Android phones, including clipboard behavior, scrolling or full-page captures, file locations, and fixes when a shortcut does not work.
Choose the capture you need
| Platform | Quick still capture | Where to look afterward | Long-content option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Snipping Tool overlay or Print Screen | Snipping Tool editor, or the clipboard for Print Screen | Use a full-screen snip; scrolling capture is not part of the basic shortcut |
| Mac | Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4 | Desktop by default, unless changed in Screenshot options | Use an app’s own full-page feature when available |
| iPhone | Side plus Volume Up, or Side plus Home | Photos, with a thumbnail appearing immediately after capture | Full Page in supported content such as a Safari webpage |
| Android | Power plus Volume Down | Google Photos or the phone’s Gallery app | Capture more on Android 12 and later, where the screen allows scrolling |
How to screenshot on Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a selected area, window, or the whole screen
- Display the content you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose the mode in the overlay: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area. For a window snip, select the window. A full-screen snip captures the entire display.
- Select the notification thumbnail to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can mark it up, crop it, save it, or share it.
The overlay is the most flexible Windows method because it lets you decide what is included before saving. A freeform snip is useful for an irregular shape; a window snip avoids accidentally including another window.
Copy the entire screen to the clipboard
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc) for a static image of the full screen copied to the clipboard. Open an image editor, document, email, or chat and press Ctrl + V to paste it. The image may not appear as a file until you paste it somewhere and save it.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Save and share the Windows image
When the image is open in Snipping Tool, use its save command to choose a file name and location, or use its share command to send it through an installed app. If you used Print Screen, paste the clipboard image into an editor first, then save it in the format and folder you want.
Windows also includes video-snip capabilities in newer Snipping Tool versions. That is screen recording rather than a still screenshot; use the still modes above when you need one image.
Windows version note
The shortcuts and Snipping Tool workflow apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but individual releases can change the surrounding interface. Some newer Copilot+ PC features are limited to those computers and should not be assumed to exist on every Windows machine.
How to screenshot on a Mac

Use the Screenshot app
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app. Its controls let you choose a full-screen capture, a selected window, or a selected portion. The Options menu can set a timer and change the save location, so you do not have to move files from the desktop afterward.
Copy instead of saving a file
Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut. The result goes to the clipboard instead of being saved directly to the desktop. Paste it into an editor, document, or message with Command-V.
Format and app limitations
Some apps can prevent screenshots of their windows. If a particular window produces a blank or blocked result, check whether that app restricts capture and use its own export or sharing function if available.
Apple notes that supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later can choose an SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF capture format. The option appears only on supported hardware and software; it is not a universal setting for every Mac.
How to screenshot on an iPhone
iPhone models without a Home button
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press and quickly release the side button and Volume Up at the same time. Do not hold them long enough to open the power-off screen.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner if you want to edit, mark up, crop, or share the image immediately.
iPhone models with a Home button
- Press and quickly release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the thumbnail to annotate or share, or let it disappear and find the image in Photos.
Capture an entire webpage or document
In supported content, tap the screenshot thumbnail and choose Full Page. This option can extend beyond the visible display; a webpage open in Safari is the standard example. If Full Page is not offered, that type of content does not support the extended capture through the current interface.

How to screenshot on an Android phone
Use the standard button combination
- Open the page, app, or image you want to capture.
- Press Power + Volume Down together and release.
- Use the on-screen preview to edit or share the image if your phone shows one.
Try the power-button menu
If the button combination does nothing, hold the Power button for a few seconds. Some phones display a Screenshot command in the power-button menu. Tap it if present. Button behavior varies by manufacturer, so if neither method is available, follow the support instructions for your phone maker.
Make a scrolling screenshot
On Android 12 and later, capture the screen normally and look for Capture more. Tap it, extend the selected area, and save the result. This works on most screens that permit scrolling, but an app can prevent the option or limit how far it extends.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFind, edit, and share the image
On current Google Photos versions, open Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. From there you can crop, draw on, send, or share the image. On older Android versions without Photos, open the phone’s Gallery app and look for the Screenshots album.
What to do after taking the screenshot
Check whether it was saved or only copied
A shortcut may create a file immediately or place the image on the clipboard. Windows Print Screen and Mac’s Control-modified shortcut are clipboard workflows. Paste those captures into an editor or message, then save a file if you need a permanent copy.
Crop before sharing
Remove unrelated tabs, notifications, account names, or private messages before sending an image. Use the built-in Snipping Tool, Mac Screenshot markup, the iPhone thumbnail editor, or Photos/Gallery editing tools on Android.

Choose a useful format and location
Keep the default location if you need a quick record, or change it in the Mac Screenshot app and save Windows or mobile captures into a named project folder. Use a lossless format when text must remain sharp; use a smaller compressed image when a messaging service limits attachment size.

Share the right version
For a quick explanation, paste or attach the image directly. For a long webpage, use iPhone Full Page or Android Capture more when available so the recipient does not need several separate files. If the recipient needs to edit the content, send the original file rather than a screenshot.

The shortcut does nothing
- Press and release the keys together rather than holding them for several seconds.
- Confirm that you are using the button combination for your device generation: iPhone models differ by Home button, and Android menus differ by manufacturer.
- On Windows, use Windows logo key + Shift + S instead of relying on a keyboard’s Print Screen behavior.
- On Mac, verify that the keys are Command, Shift, and the number or 4/5 key, not Control in place of Command.
The image is missing from the folder
It may have been copied to the clipboard instead of saved. Paste it into an editor and save it. On Mac, check the desktop or the location selected in Screenshot Options. On Android, use the Photos or Gallery paths described above.
The screenshot is blank or blocked
Some Mac apps prevent screenshots of their windows. Try another window, use the app’s export function, or consult that app’s help. A blank result can also mean that the wrong window or area was selected, so repeat the capture with a window or full-screen mode.
There is no scrolling or Full Page option
Extended capture is conditional. iPhone Full Page appears only in supported content, and Android’s Capture more requires Android 12 or later plus a screen that permits scrolling. If the control is absent, take several regular captures or use the content’s own export feature.

The capture includes sensitive information
Before sharing, inspect the complete image—not just the visible preview—for passwords, personal messages, addresses, notifications, or account identifiers. Crop or mark out those areas and keep an unedited original only where it is appropriate and secure.
Screenshot versus screen recording
A screenshot is one still image; a screen recording is a video showing activity over time. Windows’ Snipping Tool may expose video-snip controls, but those are separate from the still capture modes in this guide. Choose a screenshot for a single error, setting, or visual reference, and a recording when the sequence of actions is the important part.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a website URL rather than the screen in front of you, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. The following calls are complete starting points.
