The most direct built-in method is Power Automate for desktop (PAD): open the HTML in a browser, add Take screenshot of web page, choose the entire page or a specific element, select PNG, and save the result to a file or the clipboard. For cloud flows, use an HTML-to-image connector such as Encodian when you have HTML data, an HTML file, or a URL. CloudConvert is documented for taking a hosted URL screenshot as PNG, while Power2Apps currently documents JPG/JPEG output rather than PNG.

Choose the right conversion route

Your input and where the flow must run determine the best design.

Input and requirement Recommended route Important qualification
A page already rendered in a browser Power Automate for desktop: Take screenshot of web page The target page must be displayed in the browser instance controlled by the action.
Raw HTML, an HTML file, or a URL in a cloud flow Encodian Convert – HTML to Image Its documented controls include dimensions, CSS type, JavaScript, and a delay. Confirm that PNG is available in your tenant’s current action schema.
A hosted URL that must become a PNG in the cloud CloudConvert Create Website Screenshot The Microsoft connector documents PDF, PNG, and JPG output. It is a Premium connector and requires a CloudConvert account.
HTML or URL when JPG is acceptable Power2Apps Convert HTML or URL to JPG Image The current documented operation returns JPG/JPEG, not PNG.

OneDrive’s generic Convert file actions do not establish HTML-to-PNG support. Check Microsoft’s supported-conversions list for your exact input and output types before relying on OneDrive.

Method 1: Convert HTML to PNG with Power Automate for desktop

This is the native choice when a Windows desktop can open the content. The screenshot action captures what is currently displayed, so an HTML string or file must first be rendered in a browser.

#1 Best Overall

Prerequisites

  • Power Automate for desktop installed and a browser supported by your desktop flow.
  • The HTML available as a hosted URL, local file, or generated file that the browser can open.
  • A writable destination if you want a file rather than clipboard output.
  • A page-specific plan for waiting until scripts, fonts, and remote images have loaded. The action reference does not prescribe a universal delay.

Build the flow

  1. Prepare the document. If your flow produces HTML text, write it to a temporary .html file or expose it at a URL. This render step is necessary because the screenshot action works on a browser page, not on an unrendered string.
  2. Open the page. Add a browser-launch or navigate action and open the file or URL in the browser instance you will pass to the screenshot action.
  3. Wait for visible content. Use a browser wait, element wait, or carefully chosen delay so the content that belongs in the image is present. For pages with lazy images or client-side rendering, validate the wait against a representative page.
  4. Add the screenshot action. Search for Take screenshot of web page. Select the same browser instance.
  5. Select the capture area. Choose Entire web page for a full-page image, or Specific element when you want one DOM element. Element capture requires identifying the target element through the action’s picker or selector workflow.
  6. Set the output. Choose PNG as the image format. Select a file path for a saved image, or choose clipboard output when another desktop action will consume the bitmap immediately.
  7. Run and inspect. Check the resulting dimensions, transparency, fonts, and remote assets. Repeat with a slow-loading page before putting the flow into unattended operation.

Typical desktop-flow sequence

A practical sequence is: create or locate HTML → launch browser → navigate to the HTML → wait for the page’s key element → take screenshot of web page → choose PNG and a path such as C:Temprender.png. The screenshot documentation describes the action and formats, but does not guarantee that every script, font, or image has finished loading at any particular delay.

Method 2: Use Encodian in a cloud flow

Encodian’s documented Convert – HTML to Image action accepts HTML file content, HTML data, or a URL. It exposes rendering controls that are useful when the page is not already open on a desktop.

Configuration checklist

  • Pass exactly one supported input: HTML data, an HTML file, or a URL.
  • Set image width and height when the default rendering size is unsuitable.
  • Choose the CSS type appropriate to the document and enable the documented HTML-data decoding option when your payload is encoded.
  • Enable JavaScript when the page builds content in the browser.
  • Set a delay in milliseconds for scripts, fonts, and remote assets that need additional render time.
  • Inspect the current action’s format selector and explicitly choose PNG if it is offered. The reviewed reference describes conversion to a specified image format but does not establish that every tenant currently exposes the same PNG option.

An Encodian subscription is required. Its connector documentation describes a 30-day trial followed, after expiry, by a transition to its Free tier unless a paid plan has been purchased. That description does not establish a particular free volume or feature set, so verify the current terms before designing production capacity.

Method 3: Take a URL screenshot with CloudConvert

CloudConvert’s Power Automate connector includes Create Website Screenshot and documents PDF, PNG, and JPG output. Use it when the input is a publicly reachable or otherwise accessible hosted URL and cloud execution matters.

  1. Add the CloudConvert website-screenshot action to the flow.
  2. Connect a free or paid CloudConvert account.
  3. Provide the page URL and select PNG.
  4. Store the returned file or pass it to the next action.

This route is for a URL; the cited action does not establish arbitrary raw HTML markup as input. The Power Automate connector is marked Premium, and Microsoft lists a throttle of 100 calls per connection per 60 seconds. The documented 10 MB maximum input-file size applies to file conversion and should not be assumed to be a website-screenshot limit. Confirm current service limits and privacy handling before sending sensitive URLs.

Licensing and deployment considerations

Microsoft distinguishes standard and premium connector entitlements. A Free license can create cloud flows with standard connectors, while Power Automate Premium includes premium connectors and desktop-flow capabilities; the exact entitlement depends on the flow context and tenant configuration.

CloudConvert is explicitly Premium. Microsoft’s desktop cloud-connector guidance says premium connectors used in desktop flows require an Attended RPA license, while a free work or school account can access standard connectors. The PAD browser screenshot action itself is a desktop browser-automation action, so it is separate from adding a Premium CloudConvert connector.

HTML, URL, or open page: practical decision rules

Use PAD when the browser is already part of the process

Choose PAD for an internal tool, a local HTML file, or a workflow that already logs in and navigates a browser. It avoids sending the page to a third-party cloud converter, but the desktop machine must remain available and the browser state must be managed.

Use Encodian when the flow starts with HTML data

Encodian is the most directly documented cloud option for supplied HTML as well as URLs. Its width, height, CSS, JavaScript, and delay settings help with generated documents whose rendering cannot be assumed to match a default browser viewport.

Use CloudConvert for a hosted URL and PNG output

CloudConvert is a documented URL screenshot path when you accept the Premium connector, an external account, and the service’s current limits. It is not evidence of arbitrary raw-HTML support.

Do not select Power2Apps when PNG is mandatory

Power2Apps’ current operation is Convert HTML or URL to JPG Image. Its listed width and height defaults are 500 pixels, and its output is JPG/JPEG. It is suitable only when that format is acceptable or when a later, separately validated conversion step exists.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request renders a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting

The PNG is blank or incomplete

The browser or converter captured before client-side rendering finished. Add a wait for a distinctive content element, enable JavaScript in the cloud action, increase the documented delay, and verify that remote resources are reachable from the execution environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or fonts are missing

Check that URLs are absolute and accessible to the browser or cloud service. A local desktop page may reference files the flow account cannot read; a cloud service may be unable to reach private network resources.

The desktop action cannot find the browser

Use the browser instance returned by the launch or attach action rather than opening a second window manually. Keep the target tab active and ensure the page is displayed in that instance.

The flow cannot add CloudConvert

The connector is Premium and requires a CloudConvert account. Confirm the environment’s Power Automate entitlement, connection policy, and account authorization.

The output is JPG instead of PNG

Power2Apps is behaving as documented: its current operation is JPG/JPEG. Switch to PAD, verify Encodian’s current PNG format option, or use CloudConvert’s documented PNG screenshot action for a hosted URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large or frequent jobs time out

Reduce the capture dimensions, split oversized pages, increase a supported action timeout, and process work in controlled batches. For CloudConvert, account for the documented 100-call-per-connection-per-60-second throttle. For any external service, check current limits and avoid sending sensitive content without an approved data-handling review.

Validation checklist before production

  • Confirm that the selected route accepts your actual input type: raw HTML, file, or URL.
  • Verify PNG rather than JPG/JPEG in the current action configuration.
  • Test slow JavaScript, lazy images, custom fonts, and pages requiring authentication.
  • Measure output dimensions and file size for the largest expected document.
  • Decide whether desktop execution or a Premium cloud connector fits your licensing and deployment model.
  • Document where HTML and rendered images travel, including third-party services.
  • Add retry and failure handling for navigation errors, unavailable URLs, and renderer timeouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Power Automate convert an HTML string directly to PNG without opening a browser?

The built-in desktop screenshot action captures a page displayed in a browser, so an HTML string must first be rendered or written to a file. A cloud HTML-to-image connector can accept HTML data directly when its current action schema supports your required format.

Which option works without a Premium connector?

The desktop browser screenshot route is separate from the Premium CloudConvert connector. Your exact desktop-flow and unattended-run entitlement still depends on the tenant’s current Power Automate licensing.

Does a screenshot action preserve transparent backgrounds?

The reviewed Power Automate references do not establish a transparency guarantee. Validate the output with your specific page and renderer.
