For a long webpage in Windows 10, use Microsoft Edge: open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture full page, inspect the result, then copy or save it. Edge captures content below the viewport without making you stitch separate screenshots.
Windows 10’s Snipping Tool (formerly Snip & Sketch) can capture a region, window, or full screen, but Microsoft’s documented modes do not include scrolling capture. For PDFs, document viewers, and other scrollable desktop windows, use a utility such as ShareX or PicPick instead.
Capture an entire webpage with Microsoft Edge
Edge is the simplest option when the target is a normal webpage. The browser understands the page structure and can include sections that are not currently visible.
- Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge and wait for the page to finish loading.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also open Edge’s Screenshot/Web Capture command from the browser menu.
- Select Capture full page.
- Review the resulting long image. Scroll through it in the preview to check that headings, images, tables, and the page footer are present.
- Choose the command to copy the image or save it to a file.
Microsoft describes this feature as capturing a full webpage, including parts that would otherwise require scrolling. The exact command name or availability can vary by device type, market, and Edge version, so update Edge or use its menu if the shortcut does not open the tool.

When a full-page result is incomplete
Modern pages may load content only after you scroll, expand a section, accept a consent dialog, or wait for an animation. Perform those actions first, then run Capture full page. If a page uses an internal scroll panel rather than the browser window, Edge may capture the document around the panel instead of every item inside it; use ShareX or PicPick for that case.
Why Windows 10’s Snipping Tool is not a scrolling-screenshot tool
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance documents four capture types: rectangular snip, free-form snip, window snip, and full-screen snip. A capture is copied into the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit, save, or share it. None of those documented modes automatically scrolls through a long page or document.
You can still use Snipping Tool for a single visible section. Press Windows+Shift+S, select a mode, drag over the area, and save the result from the notification or Snipping Tool window. For content below the viewport, this produces separate images rather than one continuous screenshot. Stitching those images manually is possible but prone to gaps, overlap, and inconsistent page position.
Capture a scrolling document or desktop window with ShareX
ShareX is suited to a PDF viewer, office document, chat history, or another scrollable application that is not an ordinary webpage. Its scrolling-capture workflow repeatedly scrolls a selected region and combines the screenshots into one image.

- Install and open ShareX from its current official distribution.
- Start the Scrolling capture task from ShareX’s capture menu.
- Move the pointer over the scrollable document or window and select the region that should be captured. Choose the content area, not unrelated toolbars or a surrounding desktop.
- Let ShareX scroll and capture until the end of the content, or stop it when the desired section is complete.
- Inspect the stitched image at 100% zoom before saving or sharing it.
What to check in a stitched image
- Duplicated lines: a scroll step may have overlapped the same content.
- Missing lines: the application may have scrolled too far between frames.
- Fixed headers: a toolbar that remains pinned can appear repeatedly.
- Changing content: advertisements, animations, or live feeds can shift while capture is running.
ShareX’s documentation establishes the scrolling-capture capability, not a universal success rate. Results depend on the target application’s scrolling behavior and the region you select.
Use PicPick’s Scrolling Window mode
PicPick offers a guided Scrolling Window mode alongside full-screen, window, and region captures. It is a practical graphical alternative if you prefer a dedicated capture menu and an editor rather than ShareX’s broader utility interface.
- Open PicPick and choose Scrolling Window.
- Select the scrollable window or content area when prompted.
- Allow the capture to run through the document, stopping at the end or at your chosen point.
- Review the combined image in PicPick’s editor, correct any visible seams if the editor permits, and save it.
Check PicPick’s current license terms and supported applications before deploying it at work or recommending it for a commercial workflow. As with any scrolling utility, verify the final image; a window can expose different controls or scroll behavior than the examples in the help documentation.
Choose the right method
| Target | Best first choice | Setup | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal webpage in Edge | Edge Capture full page | Built into the browser; Ctrl+Shift+S | Availability and results can vary with browser version and page structure |
| PDF viewer or desktop document | ShareX scrolling capture | Install a utility and select the scrollable region | May duplicate or miss content during stitching |
| Scrollable app with a guided interface | PicPick Scrolling Window | Install PicPick and choose its scrolling mode | Supported applications and licensing should be checked |
| One visible area only | Windows Snipping Tool | Windows+Shift+S | No documented automatic scrolling mode |
Quality and workflow tips
Prepare the page
- Close consent dialogs, chat bubbles, and other overlays that cover content.
- Expand accordions or “load more” controls that must appear in the final image.
- Wait for images and fonts to finish loading before starting.
- For a reproducible record, note the page URL and capture date separately; a screenshot alone does not preserve changing web content.
Keep the output usable
- Save a lossless PNG when text clarity matters; use JPEG when file size matters more.
- Use an editor to crop browser chrome or sensitive information before sharing.
- Check the image at 100% zoom. A very tall image may be difficult to view, print, or attach even when the capture itself succeeded.
- For accessibility, provide the original document or page link as well as the image; screenshots do not replace selectable text.
Troubleshooting scrolling captures
Ctrl+Shift+S opens a different command
Open Edge’s menu and select Screenshot/Web Capture manually. Update Edge if the full-page option is absent. Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by browser version, device type, and market.

“Capture full page” is missing
Confirm that you are in a webpage tab, not a browser settings page or an embedded document viewer. Some pages expose a separate scrollable frame that Edge cannot treat as the main document; use a desktop scrolling utility for that frame.
The lower half of the page is blank
Wait for lazy-loaded images and dynamic sections, then capture again. Scroll through the page once to trigger deferred content. If the site requires a login, keep the authenticated session open and ensure no modal is blocking the page.
ShareX or PicPick repeats or skips text
Reduce motion by pausing video and selecting only the document area. Try a different starting position and a smaller capture region. Fixed headers and custom scroll containers can confuse stitching; if the application has an export-to-PDF command, that may preserve structure better than a screenshot.
The image is too large to open or share
Capture only the required range, crop out unused margins, or resize a copy for sharing while retaining the original. Do not overwrite the original if it may be needed as evidence.

Can I capture a scrolling screenshot of a Windows 10 Settings page with Edge?
No. Edge’s full-page command is intended for webpages. For a Windows application or Settings window, use a scrolling utility only if that window exposes a compatible scrollable region.

Does a scrolling screenshot preserve selectable text?
Usually no. The result is an image. Keep the source webpage, PDF, or document when you need search, copy, or accessibility features.
Can I stop a scrolling capture before it reaches the bottom?
Yes. ShareX and PicPick workflows allow you to stop at the desired point; review the last section to ensure the capture did not end mid-element.
Is a screenshot the same as exporting a webpage to PDF?
No. A screenshot preserves visual appearance as pixels, while a PDF export may retain selectable text and pagination. Choose the format based on how the result will be used.
