YouTube’s maxres version is typically 1,280 × 720 pixels when it exists, but it is not generated for every video.
If that file is unavailable, use hqdefault.jpg, sddefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, or default.jpg. The sections below show how to find the ID, choose the best available version, automate downloads, and avoid common quality and rights mistakes.
1. Find the YouTube video ID
The video ID is the identifier used in YouTube’s thumbnail URL. Copy it exactly, without punctuation or extra query parameters.
Standard watch links
For a URL such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqz-KE-bpKQ, the ID is the value after v=: aqz-KE-bpKQ. If the address contains other parameters, stop the ID at the next ampersand. For example, in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqz-KE-bpKQ&list=PL..., use only aqz-KE-bpKQ.

For https://youtu.be/aqz-KE-bpKQ, the ID is the final path segment. Remove any query string after it.
Shorts links
For https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aqz-KE-bpKQ, use the segment after /shorts/. The same thumbnail pattern works with that ID.
2. Open the highest-quality thumbnail URL
- Copy the video ID.
- Insert it into
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. - Open the completed address in a browser.
- Right-click or Control-click the image and choose the browser’s Save Image command.
For example, a video ID of aqz-KE-bpKQ produces https://i.ytimg.com/vi/aqz-KE-bpKQ/maxresdefault.jpg. Save the file in its original format when possible; converting a JPEG to another format does not restore detail that was not present in the source.
3. Know what each thumbnail variant provides
YouTube’s official video-resource metadata names five thumbnail objects: default, medium, high, standard, and maxres. The documented typical dimensions are:

These are typical sizes, not guarantees for every resource. YouTube says the maxres image is available for some videos and other resources that refer to videos, such as playlist items and search results. A file named maxresdefault.jpg can therefore be missing even when the video is public.
Fallback order for a missing max-resolution file
Try these practical URL names in order:

The first available file is the best usable fallback. A gray placeholder or an unsuccessful response means that particular variant was not generated; it does not prove that every thumbnail variant is unavailable.
4. Select the best available image automatically
For a one-off download, testing the URL names above is enough. For an application, request the video’s thumbnail metadata through the YouTube Data API and select the highest thumbnail object that the response actually includes. Each object supplies a URL and, when available, its width and height, so your code can choose by documented dimensions instead of guessing from a filename.
Use the returned URL rather than constructing a maxresdefault.jpg address when your program must handle many videos or playlist/search resources. The metadata method also lets you record the selected dimensions and detect when only a lower-resolution image exists.

5. Download from a terminal or script

Maxres is not 4K
The highest documented maxres size is 1,280 × 720. A larger-looking filename does not mean the creator supplied 4K artwork, and downloading a 1,280-pixel image cannot produce 4K detail. If you need a larger original, ask the creator for the source artwork rather than upscaling the thumbnail.

The source artwork may be smaller or differently proportioned
YouTube may resize an uploaded thumbnail to its required dimensions without changing the aspect ratio. It does not crop the image, so black bars can appear when the original proportions do not match. Those bars are part of the delivered image and are not evidence of a failed download.
JPEG artifacts and scaling
Thumbnail URLs commonly deliver JPEG images. Repeatedly opening and re-saving a JPEG can add compression artifacts. Keep the first downloaded copy as your master, and resize it only once for the destination where it will be displayed.
7. Troubleshoot missing or incorrect thumbnails
- 404, gray image, or placeholder: Confirm that the ID is correct, contains no trailing query parameters, and has no spaces. Try the fallback names in the order shown above.
- The URL opens a different image: Recheck that you copied the video ID, not a playlist ID, channel handle, or the entire watch URL.
- Maxres is unavailable but lower files work: This is normal; availability varies by video and resource type. Use the highest URL that exists or read the API’s returned thumbnail objects.
- The image has black bars: YouTube preserved the uploaded aspect ratio while fitting its required dimensions. Cropping is an editing choice, not a way to recover missing pixels.
- The downloaded file is tiny: Inspect its actual pixel dimensions. A successful request does not make a lower-resolution source sharper.
- Your script fails intermittently: Log the requested URL, HTTP status, content type, and final file size. Retry only transient network failures, and switch to metadata-driven selection when a variant is regularly absent.

9. Respect copyright and permission
Downloading a thumbnail for personal reference is different from republishing it. Before placing someone else’s thumbnail on a website, in a publication, advertisement, or commercial project, check the creator’s permission and any applicable license or attribution requirement. For long-term hosting or reuse, obtaining the creator’s permission is the safer practice.

10. A practical decision guide
- One image, no automation: Build the
maxresdefault.jpgURL, save it, and fall back through the alternate names if needed. - Many videos or changing availability: Use YouTube thumbnail metadata and select the highest object actually returned.
