The choice matters: a screenshot preserves the on-screen view, while a PDF is a document export that can reflow the layout. The steps below cover Chromebook and Android in detail, explain the whole-document option, and show how to automate a capture when you do not want to operate a browser manually.
Choose the output before you capture

A screenshot is an image of a viewport, not an export of every page. If the text runs below the visible area, scroll and capture additional sections unless your device supports a longer capture. A PDF is better for archiving, emailing, or printing the whole document, but it is not a screenshot.

- Open and frame the Doc. Load the Google Doc and scroll to the page or paragraph you want. Resize the browser or close side panels if they should not appear in the image.
- Open Screen Capture. If your keyboard has a dedicated Screenshot key, press it. Otherwise press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows (the key with a rectangle and two vertical lines). You can also open Settings and choose Screen Capture. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5.
- Choose a capture mode. Select Screenshot, then choose Full screen, Partial, or Window. Partial mode lets you drag around only the Doc content you need; Window mode captures the selected application window.
- Save and locate the image. Chromebook normally saves screenshots in Downloads, unless you changed the destination. Google also says the image is copied to the clipboard automatically, so you can paste it directly into an email, chat, or another document.
Which Chromebook mode should you use?
- Partial: best when you want only a paragraph, table, or image and no browser tabs or other windows.
- Window: useful for showing the Doc together with its browser chrome or a specific application window.
- Full screen: appropriate when context outside the document is relevant, but check for notifications or private tabs first.
Capturing a long Chromebook document
Chromebook’s built-in choices documented by Google are full-screen, partial, and window captures. They do not turn an arbitrarily long, scrolling Doc into one image. Capture successive, overlapping sections for a readable sequence, or use the PDF workflow below when one complete file is the real requirement.
How to screenshot a Google Doc on Android
Google’s Android instructions are documented at Take a screenshot or record your screen on your Android device.
- Open the document. In the Google Docs app or a mobile browser, navigate to the exact view you want. Wait for images and comments to finish loading, then dismiss any keyboard or menu that should not be visible.
- Take the screenshot. Press Power and Volume down at the same time. On some phones, press and hold Power, then tap Screenshot. Hardware behavior varies by manufacturer.
- Extend the capture if available. Android 12 and later offer Capture more on most screens that allow scrolling. Tap it after the initial screenshot, expand the selection, and save. Google does not guarantee that every Google Docs screen supports this control, so it may be absent or stop at a particular boundary.
- Find or share it. In Google Photos, look under Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Older phones may use the Gallery app. Use the preview’s Share or Edit action to crop, annotate, or send the image.
If Power + Volume down does not work
Try the phone’s Power-menu Screenshot action, if present. Button combinations and overlays differ across manufacturers; Google directs users to the phone maker’s support site when neither documented method works. Avoid repeatedly pressing both buttons while a volume slider is open, because that can change the volume instead of taking the capture.
How to capture the whole Google Doc as a PDF
Use this route when the deliverable must contain the document rather than a picture of the current screen. On a computer, Google documents the following process in Print a file:

- Open the Google Doc.
- Choose File > Print.
- In the print destination, select the PDF option. In Chrome, Google also documents selecting Save as PDF for large Docs.
- Choose a filename and destination, then save.
Google’s file help also describes downloading files at Create, view, or download a file. The exact mobile print or export screens were not established in the platform guidance used here, so use a computer for the documented path when a predictable PDF is important.
Why a PDF may not match a pageless Doc
Print preview lays content onto pages. For a pageless document, Google notes that images can resize to fit the page width and wide tables can be squeezed to fit. Headers, footers, watermarks, or footnotes carried over from an earlier pages-format version may also print even when they are not visible in the current pageless view. Inspect the print preview before saving if visual fidelity matters.
Screenshot or PDF: a practical decision test
- Need to show exactly what a collaborator sees right now? Take a screenshot and crop out unrelated controls.
- Need every paragraph in one searchable file? Print to PDF rather than stitching screen images.
- Need the on-screen pageless appearance? Prefer screenshots; a PDF may introduce page breaks, resizing, and inherited print elements.
- Need a single image for a slide or ticket? Use a partial or window capture at the required zoom, then verify that small text remains legible.
Quality and privacy checks before you share
- Scroll to the intended heading and confirm the correct document and account are open.
- Hide comments, suggestion panels, browser bookmarks, notifications, and unrelated tabs if they reveal private information.
- Check the zoom level: increase it for readable text, but leave enough context to identify the section.
- Review the saved image or PDF, not just the capture animation. Look for clipped table columns, missing images, or a selection that started one line too high.
- When sharing externally, crop names, email addresses, document URLs, and revision details that the recipient does not need.

Troubleshooting common failures
The screenshot contains the wrong area
Return to the Doc, scroll until the heading is fully visible, and repeat the capture. On Chromebook, use Partial mode and drag from outside the first character to outside the last line; on Android, crop from the preview rather than relying on a tiny initial selection.

The image is blank or shows a loading state
Wait for the document’s images and embedded content to finish loading before capturing. For an automated request, use a selector wait, delay, or network-idle wait. Verify that the URL is accessible without an interactive sign-in; otherwise supply the required cookies or headers.
A long capture stops early
Android’s Capture more is offered on most scrollable screens, not every Docs view. If it is unavailable or ends early, capture overlapping sections or create a PDF. A screenshot API can use full-page capture, but the resulting page still depends on what the target URL makes available to the request.
The PDF layout changed
Check print preview for page breaks, resized images, squeezed tables, and inherited headers or footers. If the visible pageless arrangement is the requirement, use screenshots instead; if semantic completeness is the requirement, keep the PDF and accept the pagination.
Chromebook cannot find the saved file
Open the Files app and check Downloads, or inspect the alternate folder configured in Screen Capture settings. The automatic clipboard copy also lets you paste the image immediately into another app.

Yes, if you can open a view or published URL that exposes the content you need. The capture will show only what that URL makes visible, including any access or sign-in screen.
Will a screenshot include version history or comments that are not visible?
No. A screenshot records the current rendered view. Open the relevant panel or version first if it must appear in the image.
Can I make a screenshot searchable like document text?
Not inherently. A screenshot is pixels; use the original Doc or a PDF when selectable, searchable text is required.
Is a Google Docs PDF an image file?
No. It is a document container with paginated content. Convert a page to an image only after exporting if a downstream system specifically requires PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
