To capture an entire scrolling webpage in Chrome without installing an extension, open DevTools, enable Device Mode, open the More options menu, and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image containing content beyond the visible browser window. Do not choose the similarly named Capture screenshot command: that saves only the current viewport.

Capture the whole page with Chrome DevTools

This built-in method works on ordinary public pages and does not require an extension. The exact DevTools labels can move slightly between Chrome versions and operating systems, but the workflow is the same.

  1. Open the webpage you want to save in Chrome and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Open DevTools. From Chrome’s menu, use More tools > Developer tools. You can also use the usual DevTools keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
  3. Turn on Device Mode by selecting the phone-and-tablet icon in the DevTools toolbar. Device Mode is required for the full-size capture command to appear in the normal menu.
  4. Open the Device Mode More options menu. It is the three-dot menu in the device emulation toolbar, not necessarily the three-dot menu for the DevTools panel itself.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page’s full available height and downloads the result as an image.

Open your Downloads folder and review the file before sharing it. A long page can produce a very tall image, and content that changes during capture may not be internally consistent.

Full size screenshot versus ordinary screenshot

Command What it captures When to use it
Capture screenshot Only the content currently visible in the emulated viewport A single screen, dialog, or viewport-specific layout
Capture a full size screenshot The page’s full rendered height, including content below the fold A complete article, landing page, documentation page, or report

If the resulting file stops at the bottom of your monitor, you selected the regular capture command or Device Mode was not active. Repeat the steps and look specifically for Capture a full size screenshot.

Find the command when the menu is different

Chrome’s DevTools interface changes across releases and platforms. If you cannot locate the item in the Device Mode menu, open the DevTools Command Menu and type screenshot. Choose the screenshot command that specifies a full-size or full-page capture when it is offered. The Command Menu is also useful when a toolbar button is hidden because the DevTools window is narrow.

Do not confuse a command for capturing a selected area with a full-page command. Area capture requires you to draw a rectangle; it cannot guarantee that content below the viewport is included.

Prepare a page before capturing

Wait for content and images

Let the page finish its initial load. If images are lazy-loaded only after scrolling, the capture may contain empty image areas or placeholders. Scroll through the page once, pause while images appear, and then run the full-size command. This is especially important for portfolios, product catalogs, and pages with embedded charts.

Choose the right page state

Close menus, tooltips, cookie dialogs, and account panels that you do not want in the final image. Conversely, if the screenshot is evidence of a particular state, leave that state visible and check that the page has not navigated or refreshed before capturing.

Consider responsive layout

Device Mode changes the emulated viewport width. A full-size screenshot therefore reflects the selected device or custom width, not necessarily the dimensions of your physical monitor. Set the desired device preset or enter a custom width before capturing. If you need a desktop version, choose a desktop-sized viewport; if you are documenting a mobile layout, select an appropriate phone preset.

Pages that do not have a fixed “full page”

Chrome can capture the rendered page height, but some websites continually create new content as you scroll. Social feeds, chat histories, virtualized tables, and infinite-scroll catalogs may have no stable endpoint. In those cases, “entire page” depends on the moment and the capture method.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • Infinite scroll: stop loading at a deliberate point, then capture, or save several sections instead of claiming the image is complete.
  • Virtualized lists: the page may keep only visible rows in the document, so rows that were not rendered cannot appear in a DOM-based full-page image.
  • Embedded editors and preview shells: the outer page may be tall while the actual document is inside a scrollable frame. Capture the frame or export from the editor when possible.
  • Animations and live data: pause rotating banners or wait for a stable state. A screenshot can otherwise contain different states at different vertical positions.

One Chrome Web Store listing for FullPageShot specifically warns about virtualized or infinite-scroll feeds and some editor preview shells. Treat extension descriptions and privacy statements as vendor claims, not as independent tests.

Use an extension when a toolbar button is more convenient

Extensions are optional; DevTools covers the central task. If you capture pages frequently, an extension can put the command behind a toolbar icon.

GoFullPage

The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing says to click its extension icon (or use Alt+Shift+P), wait for the capture, and then download the result as an image or PDF. The listing displayed 11,000,000 users and a 4.9 rating from 84.2K ratings when accessed in 2026; these are time-sensitive store figures, not an independent performance test. Its changelog listed version 8.9 dated 2026-09-24.

FullPageShot

The FullPageShot listing describes one-click full-page PNG output saved to Downloads and says it uses the Chrome DevTools Protocol. It also states that virtualized or infinite-scroll content can defeat whole-page DOM capture. The listing claims GPL-3.0 licensing and no tracking or screenshot uploads, but those claims were not independently audited here. Before installing any extension, inspect the current permissions, publisher, update history, and output format in the Chrome Web Store.

How to choose

Need Best starting point Trade-off
Occasional full-page image Built-in DevTools Several clicks, but no installation or extension permissions
One-click toolbar workflow A maintained full-page extension Review permissions and publisher claims before use
PDF output An extension that explicitly supports PDF, or Chrome’s print dialog PDF pagination and image capture are different outputs
Automated, repeatable captures A screenshot API Requires an API key and request handling, but avoids manual browser work

Privacy and sharing checks

A screenshot can expose names, email addresses, billing details, private messages, order numbers, access tokens, and account-specific recommendations. Before sending the file:

  • Check the address bar and page for private URLs or identifiers.
  • Review the entire tall image, not only its top section.
  • Redact credentials, personal data, and internal links with an image editor.
  • Do not install an extension on a sensitive account without understanding the permissions shown in its current store listing.

For authenticated pages, remember that the screenshot reflects the account and permissions active in that browser session. It is not a neutral public copy of the site.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is useful when you need the same capture in a build, monitoring job, documentation pipeline, or AI-agent workflow rather than a manually downloaded file.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the full option list. The following examples are runnable; replace the URL and key with your values.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Options cover full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Troubleshooting Chrome full-page captures

Only the visible screen was saved

Run the command again with Device Mode enabled and select Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. If the item is missing, use the Command Menu and search for screenshot.

Images or sections are blank

Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to settle, and capture again. Check whether the missing content is inside an iframe or a virtualized component; the outer document cannot always render content that the application has not created.

The bottom is cut off

Look for infinite scrolling, a nested scroll container, or a page whose height changes while it loads. Stop the feed, capture the specific scroll container where possible, or use the site’s own export function.

The layout looks wrong

Device Mode may be using a narrow phone width, a different device scale, or a mobile user-agent layout. Select the intended preset or set a custom viewport, then recapture.

The screenshot contains stale or mixed content

Dynamic pages can change while Chrome is rendering the tall image. Pause animations, wait for the final data state, and review the output before treating it as a record.

An extension does not capture a page

Check its current permissions, reload the tab, and test a simple public page. Browser-protected pages, extension pages, active browser UI, and some embedded frames may be inaccessible. If permissions are broader than your policy allows, remove the extension and use DevTools or an API instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I capture a full page without an extension?

Yes. Chrome DevTools includes Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode. Extensions are only a convenience layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?

Yes, when Chrome can render that content as part of the page. Infinite feeds, virtualized lists, and continuously changing applications may not have a finite or stable endpoint.

Will Chrome save the result as a PDF?

The DevTools command produces an image. Use Chrome’s print workflow for a PDF, or choose a capture service or extension that explicitly supports PDF output.

What should I do with a screenshot of a private page?

Inspect the complete image for personal or confidential information and redact it before sharing. The capture preserves the access state of the browser session that produced it.
