Use your operating system’s built-in capture tool: Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Command + Shift + 4 on Mac, and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows on Chromebook. Drag around the area you need, then save or copy it. iPhone supports cropping a screenshot to a smaller area; Android steps vary by phone brand and version.

Choose the method that matches your device

The fastest method is normally a keyboard shortcut, but every platform also has an on-screen tool. A rectangular selection is best for a clean box around text or an image. Freeform selection is useful when the subject has an irregular outline. Window capture selects an entire app window without manually tracing its edges.

Platform Direct partial capture Where the result goes
Windows 10/11 Yes: rectangular or freeform Snipping Tool selection Snipping Tool for editing, saving, or sharing; the image is also copied for the capture workflow
macOS Yes: drag a region with Command + Shift + 4 Normally the desktop; the thumbnail can be copied to the clipboard
Chromebook Yes: Screen Capture’s “Take a partial screenshot” Downloads by default and the clipboard
iPhone Use a screenshot and crop to the needed area; a universal direct-region gesture is not established Photos, after editing or cropping
Android Depends on the manufacturer and Android version Varies by device; check its current support instructions

Capture part of the screen in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Use the keyboard shortcut

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  2. When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose Rectangular snip for a box, or Freeform snip for an irregular shape. The overlay also offers window and full-screen modes.
  3. Click and drag over the area to capture, then release.
  4. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share the image.

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of a PC screen. Windows 10 and Windows 11 both support this workflow, although individual features can differ by release or device. Video capture in Snipping Tool is a separate function; it does not create a still partial screenshot.

Start from the app instead

  1. Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
  2. Open the app and choose a capture mode: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
  3. Drag the selection or choose the target window.
  4. Use the Snipping Tool window to annotate, copy, save, or share.

Clipboard versus a saved file

If you only need to paste the image into an email, document, or chat, use the copy option in Snipping Tool and paste immediately. If you need a reusable file, choose Save and select a folder and format. Saving a second copy avoids losing a capture when the clipboard is replaced by your next copy operation.

Capture a selected area on a Mac

Drag a region with the shortcut

  1. Press Command + Shift + 4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
  2. Drag across the area you want.
  3. Release the pointer. macOS captures the selected region.

The default destination is the desktop. A thumbnail appears briefly; use it to open editing controls before the image is filed.

Use Screenshot controls

Open the Screenshot controls when you prefer visible buttons or need a window, selected portion, or full-screen capture. The controls are useful when the shortcut is unfamiliar or when you want to change the destination and timer settings before capturing.

Copy instead of saving to the desktop

Control-click the screenshot thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. You can then paste the image into another app without creating a desktop file. Apple notes that some applications, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. The current Apple instructions include controls for supported Mac models using macOS Tahoe 26 or later; older macOS releases can present different labels.

Capture part of the screen on a Chromebook

Use Screen Capture

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key usually has a rectangle with two vertical lines.
  2. If your keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative.
  3. Choose Screenshot, then Take a partial screenshot.
  4. Drag over the region and release.

Chromebook screenshots and recordings are copied to the clipboard and saved to Downloads by default. To change the location, open Screen Capture settings and choose another folder.

When the keyboard shortcut is unavailable

Click the time or status area, open Screen capture, and select the partial-screenshot option on screen. On touchscreen tablets, Google also documents opening the power-button menu and choosing Screen capture.

Capture only part of an iPhone screenshot

Apple’s documented iPhone workflow is to take a screenshot first, then crop it so only the required area remains. It is not safe to promise a Mac- or Windows-style arbitrary region gesture on every iPhone screen.

  1. Take a normal screenshot using your iPhone model’s current button combination.
  2. Tap the screenshot thumbnail when it appears, or open the image in Photos.
  3. Choose the crop tool and drag the handles until the relevant portion remains.
  4. Tap Done, then save the edited image as a new photo or replace the original according to the option shown.

For a web page that extends beyond one screen, Apple’s guide also documents a full-page screenshot. You can crop that full-page image to retain a smaller portion, which is useful when the target content is lower on the page.

What to do on Android

There is no single, version-independent Android partial-screenshot shortcut established here. Manufacturers change the buttons, menus, and editing tools in their Android interfaces. Check the support page for your phone brand and exact Android version before following a shortcut from another device.

  • Look for a Screenshot or Screen capture command in the power or quick-settings menu.
  • After taking a screenshot, check the editor for Crop or a selection tool.
  • If a guide names a button combination, confirm that it matches your model; copying a shortcut from a different brand can trigger a different action.

Save, copy, and edit a partial screenshot correctly

Choose the right output

  • Clipboard: best for a one-time paste into a message, document, or ticket.
  • PNG: preserves crisp text and transparency where the platform supports it.
  • JPEG: creates smaller files for photographic content but can blur fine text.
  • WebP: can be compact when your destination accepts it.

Include enough context

Leave a small margin around the item if a reviewer needs to understand which window or page it came from. For privacy, crop out account numbers, notification previews, addresses, and unrelated tabs before sharing. If you annotate, keep arrows and labels outside the text you are trying to prove.

Capture a window instead of tracing it

Use window mode on Windows or the Screenshot controls on Mac when the entire application window is the relevant unit. Window capture usually produces cleaner edges than a hurried rectangular drag and avoids including neighboring windows.

Troubleshoot a partial screenshot that did not work

The shortcut does nothing

  • Windows: open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and start the capture from the app.
  • Mac: open Screenshot controls instead of relying on the keyboard shortcut.
  • Chromebook: open the time/status area and select Screen capture.
  • Any platform: check whether another utility or keyboard layout has reassigned the shortcut.

The image was captured but cannot be found

  • Chromebook saves to Downloads unless you changed the Screen Capture folder.
  • Mac normally places the file on the desktop; check the screenshot thumbnail and its destination settings.
  • Windows keeps the capture in Snipping Tool until you save it. Search for the filename or use the app’s Save command.

The selection is the wrong size

Repeat the capture and start dragging from a corner outside the subject. On Windows, choose rectangular mode when freeform edges are making the result uneven. On Mac and Chromebook, cancel the current drag and begin again rather than trying to resize after release.

A protected window is blank or blocked

Some applications intentionally prevent screenshots; Apple specifically notes that Apple TV may not allow screenshots of its windows. Respect the application’s restrictions and use an approved export or sharing function instead of attempting to bypass protection.

Or skip the browser setup: capture a web page with ScreenshotNeo

If what you need is a clean image of a web page rather than the physical area currently visible on your monitor, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a low-cost paid entry plan.

It is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Windows, Mac, Chromebook, or phone screen capture. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API can capture a CSS-selected element, full pages with lazy images loaded, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching with your chosen TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots a month without adding a card.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

  • Built-in desktop and mobile capture is immediate and does not require an account, network connection, or paid software for ordinary use.
  • Clipboard captures are fastest for one-off sharing; saved files are safer for records, because a later copy operation can replace clipboard contents.
  • For web-page automation, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle when content loads after the initial HTML. Block ads or trackers when they interfere with a repeatable result, and use caching when the same URL does not need a fresh render every time.
  • Protect API keys: place them in environment variables or a server-side request, not in client-side JavaScript delivered to visitors.
  • Use the response verdict and billing headers to distinguish a valid clean capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit.

Quick decision checklist

  • Need a selected area of your current desktop? Use the operating-system shortcut.
  • Need an entire application window? Choose window capture rather than dragging a box.
  • Need a cropped iPhone image? Take the screenshot, then crop it in the editor.
  • Using Android? Verify the exact brand and Android version first.
  • Need repeatable images of URLs, selected page elements, or PDFs? Use ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a partial screen without installing software?

Yes. Windows, macOS, Chromebook, and iPhone include built-in screenshot and crop tools. Android also has built-in tools, but the exact partial-capture steps depend on the phone brand and Android version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a partial screenshot and a cropped screenshot?

A partial screenshot selects the region before capture, as on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook. Cropping captures the whole screen first and removes the unwanted edges afterward, as in the documented iPhone workflow.

Why is my screenshot not appearing in the clipboard?

The platform may have saved a file instead, or another copy operation may have replaced the clipboard. Check the platform’s default destination—Downloads on Chromebook, the desktop on Mac, or Snipping Tool on Windows—and copy the image again before pasting.

Can ScreenshotNeo capture my physical monitor?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages from a URL through an API. Use your operating system’s built-in tool for a physical desktop, app window, or phone display.
