Print preview is important because a page can use a different print layout than its on-screen design. If colors, image backgrounds, or other visual elements disappear, enable the browser’s background-printing option before saving.
What you are creating
Printing a webpage to PDF creates a paginated document that represents the browser’s print layout. It is not the same as downloading the original HTML or saving one image file. A page may reflow columns, omit interactive controls, split content across pages, or load differently when printed. The final PDF is therefore the file to verify, not just the preview thumbnail.
- Print to PDF: a PDF version of the page’s print layout, with images that successfully render in that layout.
- Save Page As: an offline webpage package or HTML file, which is a different result.
- Save Image As: a copy of one image, rather than the complete page.
Chrome documents saving a webpage or an individual image separately from printing. Use those commands only when you need the source page or one asset, not a PDF of the page layout.
Before you print: make the page ready
- Open the exact URL you want to archive and wait for the page to finish loading.
- Scroll through the page if it uses lazy loading. Some sites request images only as you approach them; printing before those requests complete can leave blank image areas.
- Dismiss overlays that cover content, such as newsletter forms or sign-in prompts, when the page provides a close control.
- Check that important images are visible on screen. If an image is already broken or blocked in the page, print preview cannot reliably restore it.
- Decide whether you need the whole page or selected pages. Print dialogs commonly provide page ranges, orientation, margins, and scale controls.
Dynamic, lazy-loaded, or specially styled content can still render differently in print. Preview the entire document and open the saved PDF afterward to confirm that images and page breaks are acceptable.

Chrome: print a webpage to PDF
- Open the page in Chrome on a desktop computer.
- Choose File → Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print preview, choose the PDF destination offered by your system; Chrome’s instructions refer to Save as PDF as a destination.
- Review the preview page by page. Set layout (portrait or landscape), paper size, margins, scale, and a page range where those controls are available.
- Save the file, choose a location and filename, then open the resulting PDF to check the images.
If a colored panel or a background image is missing, look for a background-graphics option in the print settings. The exact control can vary by Chrome version and operating system.
Firefox: use Save to PDF
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Open the application menu and choose Print.
- In print preview, set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Adjust orientation, page range, scale, margins, and other available options.
- Under More settings, enable Print backgrounds when the design depends on background colors or images.
- Click Print, select a filename and folder, and inspect the saved PDF.
Mozilla notes that webpages can be set up to appear differently on paper than on screen. A clean-looking browser view is not a guarantee that the print version will have identical spacing or image placement.
Microsoft Edge: include background graphics when needed
- Open the page in Edge.
- Choose Settings and more → Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Review the print preview and select the PDF destination offered by your system or browser.
- Set orientation, paper size, margins, scale, and page range as needed.
- Open More settings and turn on Background graphics if color blocks, decorative images, or other backgrounds are absent.
- Save the file and verify the actual PDF.
Edge’s labels and destination list can differ by operating system and browser build, so use the preview as the authoritative check.
Settings that affect image fidelity
Backgrounds versus ordinary images
An image inserted as page content and an image used as a CSS background are handled differently by print styles. A normal image may appear while a background remains hidden unless Print backgrounds or Background graphics is enabled. If a design still differs after enabling that option, the site’s print CSS may intentionally remove or reposition it.

Orientation, scale, and margins
Landscape orientation can prevent wide screenshots, diagrams, or tables from being clipped. Reducing scale may keep a wide layout on one page but can make text and images harder to read. Larger margins reduce the printable area and can create additional page breaks. Change one setting at a time and recheck the preview.
Page ranges
Use a page range when you need only a section, but remember that page numbers refer to the paginated print result, not necessarily headings or screen positions. A page break can move after changing scale, margins, or orientation.
Headers, footers, and print-only elements
Browsers may add headers and footers such as the page title, URL, date, or page number. Turn them off when the PDF must contain only the site’s content; leave them on when provenance or the source URL matters. A site’s print stylesheet can also hide navigation, ads, or other elements by design.
Why images are missing or misplaced
- The image was lazy-loaded: return to the page, scroll through the relevant sections, wait for images to appear, and print again.
- The preview omits a colored background: enable Firefox’s Print backgrounds or Edge’s Background graphics; look for an equivalent background option in Chrome.
- The image is loaded from a blocked or protected source: confirm that it displays in the page first. Authentication, content blocking, or a failed request can prevent printing it.
- The site has print-specific CSS: compare the screen and preview. The site may deliberately hide decorative or interactive content for paper.
- The page is still changing: wait for animations, ads, consent dialogs, and network requests to settle, then reopen preview.
- The PDF opens with a blank area: inspect the file itself, not only the preview, and retry after reloading the page. There is no single browser setting that fixes every site’s rendering behavior.
A verification checklist
- Open the saved PDF in a viewer rather than trusting the download notification.
- Check the first, middle, and last pages for missing images or unexpected blank regions.
- Confirm that wide images are not clipped at the right edge.
- Zoom into photographs, charts, and small labels to ensure they remain legible.
- Check page breaks around captions, lists, and tables.
- Confirm that the filename and folder are correct before sharing the file.
When browser printing is not enough
Built-in printing is usually the simplest option, but it depends on the page’s print stylesheet, browser version, loaded resources, and your device. It does not promise pixel-for-pixel screen fidelity, and the official browser guidance does not guarantee that every dynamic or lazy-loaded image will survive. For repeatable, server-side captures, an API can control loading, waiting, device settings, and PDF output without a local browser window.

The response is not the expected file
Check the HTTP status, response headers, and the API documentation for the requested output format. Save the response bytes exactly as returned and avoid treating a binary file as text.
The page is incomplete
Add a wait for a specific selector, a delay, or network idle; enable full-page capture so lazy images can load; and use custom JavaScript when the page requires an interaction before rendering.

A protected page fails
Provide the required custom headers, cookies, user agent, or Authorization configuration only when you are authorized to access the page. A bot check, blank page, timeout, or failed load is reported in the response and is not billed.
Repeated captures are slow or expensive
Choose a cache TTL when the page can be reused, use bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, and monitor usage through the usage API. Cache hits are not billed.
