To add an image to a Notion page, open a new line and either drag the file onto the page, choose Image from the + block menu, or type /image and press Enter. Notion then lets you upload a file, embed an image URL, or choose a photo from Unsplash. For a database record, use its Files & media property or place an image in the record’s page body.

This guide covers each route, image controls, database-specific choices, supported formats, size caveats, and fixes for images that fail to upload or display.

Choose the right way to add the image

What you have Documented route What to know
A file on your computer Drag it onto the page, or /image → Upload Usually the quickest option for a local image.
An image hosted online /image → Embed link (image URL) Notion must be able to retrieve the URL; permissions, hotlink protection, or an expired link can prevent display.
A stock photo /image → Unsplash Search and select an image inside Notion’s image flow.
An image belonging to a database item Database Files & media property, or the item’s page body The property keeps the image attached to the record; the page-body route places it among that record’s content.

These controls are documented in Notion’s Images, files & media help page. Interface labels can change, but the insertion choices are the same in the current documentation.

Add an image to a regular Notion page

Method 1: Drag and drop a local file

  1. Open the target page and click a blank line where the image should appear.
  2. Find the image in Finder, File Explorer, or your desktop.
  3. Drag the file into the Notion page and release it when the insertion highlight appears.
  4. Wait for the upload to finish. The image becomes its own block.

This method is best when the image is already saved locally and you do not need to choose between multiple source types.

  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

Method 2: Use the plus menu

  1. Place the cursor on a new line.
  2. Click the + in the left margin.
  3. Select Image.
  4. Choose Upload, Embed link, or Unsplash.
  5. Complete the prompt for the source you selected.

The plus menu makes the available sources visible, which is useful when the picture is online or you want a stock photo rather than a local file.

Method 3: Use the slash command

  1. Click a new line in the page.
  2. Type /image.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose the source and finish the upload, URL, or Unsplash selection.

The slash command is the keyboard-driven equivalent of the plus menu and inserts an image block at the cursor position.

Insert an image from a URL

  1. Copy the direct URL of the image, not merely the URL of a webpage containing it.
  2. In Notion, insert an image with /image or the + menu.
  3. Select Embed link.
  4. Paste the image URL and confirm.

The host must allow Notion to fetch the file. A private object, login-protected asset, expiring signed URL, or server rule that blocks external retrieval may produce a broken image even when the URL works in your own browser. If the source later disappears or its permissions change, the embedded image may stop displaying; upload a copy when you need a durable page asset.

Choose an image from Unsplash

  1. Insert an image block with /image or the plus menu.
  2. Select Unsplash.
  3. Search for a subject, review the results, and choose the image.

Unsplash is part of Notion’s documented image insertion flow, so you do not need to download the photo first.

Add an image to a Notion database

Use the Files & media property

  1. Open the database and add or locate a Files & media property.
  2. Open the property cell for the record.
  3. Upload or attach the image using the property’s file control.

Notion also documents dragging a file into a database card, gallery item, or property cell. This keeps the image associated with the record itself, which is useful for avatars, product photos, receipts, and reference art.

Put the image in the database page body

  1. Open the database item so its full page appears.
  2. Click a new line in the body.
  3. Type /image (or drag in a file) and choose the source.

Use the body when the image belongs in the item’s narrative content, alongside notes or other blocks. You can use both a Files & media property and body images when the record needs a thumbnail plus detailed visual documentation.

Resize, move, crop, and describe the image

Reposition and resize

Drag the image block to move it. Drag the side guides to change its displayed width. Column guides appear when you drag a block beside another block, allowing side-by-side layouts.

Crop and align

Open the image block menu for cropping and alignment controls. Cropping changes the displayed framing without requiring you to edit the original file elsewhere.

Add a caption and alt text

Use the image controls to add a caption that explains context for readers. Add alt text that conveys the image’s purpose or essential information for people using assistive technology or viewing without the image.

Open or save the image

The block controls include full-screen viewing and downloading. Use those commands when you need a larger inspection view or a copy of the image.

Supported image formats and size caveats

Notion’s supported-file list includes HEIC, ICO, JPEG, JPG, PNG, TIF, TIFF, GIF, SVG, and WEBP. Other media and document formats appear on the same list, but they are not image formats.

Notion’s help content currently gives conflicting upload-size guidance. One note says paid-plan PDFs must be under 20 MB and PNG/JPG images under 5 MB; a later FAQ says paid-plan files may be up to 5 GB each. The same page separately says Free Plan uploads must be under 5 MB. Because these statements do not agree, check the limit shown in your workspace or the current Notion documentation before relying on a specific paid-plan maximum. If an image is too large to display, Notion recommends uploading it as a file instead.

Troubleshoot an image that will not upload or display

Upload fails immediately

  • Confirm the extension is one of Notion’s supported image types.
  • Try uploading the file again; a temporary transfer failure can be resolved by a re-upload.
  • Reduce the file size or export a copy as JPG or PNG if the original is unusually large.
  • Check the size guidance for your plan in the live Notion interface, because the published paid-plan statements conflict.

An embedded URL shows a broken image

  • Verify that you pasted a direct image URL rather than a page URL.
  • Open the URL in a private browser window to check whether it requires a login.
  • Check whether the host blocks external requests, uses an expired URL, or restricts access by referrer.
  • Download the image and upload it directly when you control the file and need reliable access.

Some images load while others do not

Notion warns that loading many images at once can trigger an image-loading error. Put some images inside toggles or remove images that are not needed, then reload the page. This reduces the number of assets Notion has to fetch simultaneously. See Notion’s upload and viewing troubleshooting page for the documented checks.

Other people cannot see the image

Review page and file permissions. A viewer may lose access when a shared source expires or when the image is embedded from a location they cannot access. For team pages, confirm that the page and any externally hosted asset are shared with the intended audience.

The image is too large to display

Notion’s documented workaround is to upload it as a file rather than relying on the image display. You can also create a smaller derivative for inline viewing while keeping the original as a downloadable file.

If you need a clean image of a webpage to place in Notion, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Practical choices for a clean Notion page

  • Use drag-and-drop for a local image you simply need inline.
  • Use an uploaded copy instead of a URL when the source may expire or require permission.
  • Use Unsplash when you want a stock image without leaving Notion.
  • Use a Files & media property for a database thumbnail or record attachment.
  • Add captions and alt text when the image carries meaning beyond decoration.
  • Reduce image count or use toggles when a page begins showing loading errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add more than one image to a Notion page?

Yes. Insert additional image blocks on separate lines or drag multiple files into the page. If many images load poorly, place some in toggles or remove unnecessary ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a Notion image URL keep working forever?

Not necessarily. The image host must remain accessible to Notion, and a private, expired, or restricted URL can stop displaying. Upload a local copy when long-term availability matters.

Should a database image go in Files & media or the page body?

Use Files & media when the image is a record attribute such as a thumbnail. Use the page body when it belongs with the record’s written content; both locations can be used together.
