An MCP server is software that implements the server side of the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It makes capabilities or contextual data available to an MCP client, which is managed by an AI application called the host. Depending on its implementation, a server can expose executable tools, data resources, reusable prompts, or a combination of them. It can run on your computer or remotely over HTTP.
MCP standardizes how the host, client, and server exchange messages; it does not make every server interchangeable, guarantee that a server is trustworthy, or dictate how an AI model uses the results.
MCP server in one sentence
Think of an MCP server as an adapter between an AI application and an external system such as files, a database, an API, or a business process. The server presents that system through the Model Context Protocol, so a compatible host can discover what is available and request it through a consistent message format.
The “server” is a software role, not necessarily a separate physical machine. A local program connected through standard input and output is an MCP server just as a cloud service reached over HTTP can be.

How the MCP pieces fit together
Host: the AI application
The host is the application that coordinates MCP connections and decides how returned data or requested actions fit into a conversation or workflow. Claude Code and Claude Desktop are examples of hosts described in the MCP architecture guide. A host can connect to one or many servers.
Client: the connection component
For each server connection, the host maintains an MCP client component. The client handles protocol communication with that particular server, including capability discovery and requests. Users normally interact with the host, not with a client as a separate product.
Server: the capability provider
The server implements MCP’s server side and exposes selected capabilities. It may wrap a REST API, query a database, read files, call an internal service, or perform a calculation. The server decides what it offers and what credentials or permissions it uses.
Protocol: the shared message rules
The protocol defines message formats, capability negotiation, and the semantics of features such as tools, resources, prompts, and notifications. MCP uses JSON-RPC 2.0 in its data layer. A compatible host still needs an implementation that supports the server’s protocol revision and transport.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat an MCP server can expose
Tools: actions the model can request
Tools are executable functions. A server might offer a tool to query a database, create an issue, call an API, or run a computation. Clients can list available tools and invoke one by name with structured inputs, then return the result to the host.
A listed tool is not an automatic grant of unlimited authority. The official MCP tools guidance says users should be able to deny invocations and that applications should clearly show which tools are exposed and when they are used. For consequential actions, a host should present the inputs and request meaningful confirmation.
Resources: information supplied as context
Resources are data or content that an AI application can read for context. Examples include file contents, database records, or an API response. A resource is about providing information; it is not necessarily an action that changes an external system.

Prompts: reusable interaction templates
Prompts are reusable templates that help structure an interaction, such as a standard investigation workflow or an instruction paired with examples. A server may provide prompts in addition to tools and resources, or implement only the primitives its use case needs.
Capability sets are implementation-specific
There is no requirement that every MCP server implement all three primitives. Before connecting one, inspect exactly which tools, resources, and prompts it exposes, their input schemas, and the effects they can have.
What happens during a typical MCP request
- Connection: The host starts or reaches the server using a supported transport.
- Initialization: Client and server exchange protocol-version and capability information.
- Discovery: The client asks for available tools, resources, or prompts as needed.
- Selection: The host’s model or application chooses a capability based on the user’s request and the advertised schema.
- Invocation or read: The client sends a structured JSON-RPC request to call a tool or obtain a resource.
- Result handling: The server returns a result or an error; the host decides how to display it or use it in a subsequent step.
The exact method names and features depend on the protocol revision and SDK. For implementation work, use documentation that matches the version you deploy rather than copying an older example unchanged.
Local stdio versus remote Streamable HTTP
| Transport | Typical deployment | Strengths | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| stdio | A local process launched by the host | Direct process communication, usually one MCP client, and no network overhead | The host machine must have the program, its dependencies, and access to any required files or credentials |
| Streamable HTTP | A remote service reachable over HTTP | Can serve many clients and fit centralized or cloud deployments | Requires network availability, authentication, authorization, and protection of the endpoint |
The architecture guidance describes stdio for local communication and Streamable HTTP for remote communication. Remote connections support standard HTTP authentication methods, and the architecture guide recommends OAuth for obtaining authentication tokens. Choosing HTTP does not by itself make a server public; deployment and access-control settings determine who can connect.
How to decide whether a server is suitable
Check the capability surface
- Which tools, resources, and prompts are exposed?
- What inputs does each tool accept, and what does it change?
- Can the server read sensitive files or reach production systems?
Match the transport to the boundary
Use local stdio when the host and the wrapped system belong on the same machine and a single-client process is sufficient. Consider Streamable HTTP when several users or hosts need a centrally managed service, or when the wrapped system already lives remotely.
Verify compatibility
Confirm that the target host supports the transport, authentication method, and MCP specification revision used by the server. SDK behavior can differ between major versions. The official TypeScript SDK documentation identifies v2 as the stable line implementing the specification released on 2026-07-28 and supports Node.js, Bun, and Deno.
Evaluate operational impact
Read the server’s documentation and source where available. Identify credentials, outbound network access, file-system scope, write operations, logging, rate limits, and failure behavior. MCP compatibility tells you how a connection works; it does not certify the code behind that connection.

Security and human oversight
An MCP server can expose actions that affect external systems, so treat a connection as an access boundary rather than as a harmless plug-in.
- Least privilege: Give the server only the files, API scopes, and accounts it needs.
- Reviewable calls: Keep a user in the loop for destructive, financial, publishing, or permission-changing operations.
- Visible behavior: The host should make exposed tools and invocation events clear, as recommended by the official tools guidance.
- Credential handling: Prefer short-lived or narrowly scoped credentials and avoid placing secrets in prompts or resource content.
- Remote protection: Require authentication, authorize each user or tenant, validate inputs, and use encrypted transport for HTTP deployments.
- Auditability: Record enough request and result metadata to investigate misuse without logging secrets unnecessarily.
A server that can only read documentation presents a different risk from one that can delete records or deploy code. Assess the consequences of each tool, not merely the server’s name.

The MCP project announced a specification release dated 2026-07-28. The announcement describes a stateless protocol core, authorization changes, and cache hints for list and read results. Those details may not exist in older examples or SDKs, so check the specification and SDK version together when upgrading.
The project’s maintainers reported that Tier 1 SDKs were approaching half a billion downloads per month, with the TypeScript and Python SDKs each exceeding one billion total downloads. These are figures reported by the maintainers, not independent measurements, and they indicate reported project adoption rather than the reliability or safety of any individual server.
A concrete example: an AI assistant with a documentation server
Imagine a local server that exposes a search_docs tool and a resource containing the current API reference. A user asks, “How do I rotate an access token?” The host asks the client what the server provides, selects the search tool, sends a structured query, and receives matching documentation. The host may then read the referenced resource and formulate an answer.
If the same server also exposes revoke_token, that is a materially different capability. The host should show the proposed target and obtain confirmation before calling it. The protocol can carry the request and result, but the host’s permission and confirmation design determines whether the workflow is safe and understandable.
Using an MCP server for website screenshots
Screenshot capture is a useful example of an MCP tool: an AI host can ask a server to capture a URL, inspect page information, or produce a PDF without embedding browser automation in the conversation layer. ScreenshotNeo provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools, so Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client can request those operations.

The host cannot start a stdio server
Check the executable path, runtime version, package installation, and environment variables. Run the server directly in a terminal and ensure that protocol messages use standard output only; diagnostic logging should go to standard error so it does not corrupt the JSON-RPC stream.
The host reports an unsupported protocol or capability
Compare the host, server, and SDK versions. A server may rely on features introduced after the host’s supported revision. Upgrade the compatible side or configure the server to use the older capability set it supports.
A remote server returns an authentication error
Verify the token audience, scope, expiry, and authorization header format. For OAuth-based deployments, complete the token flow expected by the server and confirm that the authenticated identity is authorized for the requested tool or resource.
A tool call fails after discovery succeeds
Discovery proves only that the tool is advertised. Validate required fields, types, and limits against its input schema, then inspect the server’s returned error. Check downstream API credentials, network access, rate limits, and whether the requested record or file still exists.

The model uses a dangerous tool unexpectedly
Disable or narrow the tool, require confirmation in the host, reduce credentials, and review logs. Do not assume that naming a server “read-only” is sufficient; inspect the implementation and actual permissions.
Bottom line
An MCP server is the protocol-speaking software that supplies an AI host with tools, resources, prompts, or some combination. The host coordinates the experience, the client manages a server connection, and MCP defines the message and capability rules. Choose stdio or Streamable HTTP according to deployment, verify version compatibility, and treat every exposed capability as an explicit permission boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an MCP server have to run in the cloud?
No. A local process communicating over stdio is a supported MCP server. Remote Streamable HTTP is an option when multiple clients or centralized deployment are needed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can one MCP server expose both tools and resources?
Yes. A server may expose any combination of tools, resources, and prompts, or only the primitives required by its use case.
Is MCP the same as an API?
No. An API is an interface to a particular service; MCP is a protocol for presenting capabilities and context to compatible AI hosts and clients. An MCP server may wrap an API.
Does MCP compatibility mean a server is safe?
No. Compatibility describes communication and capability discovery. You still need to evaluate code, credentials, permissions, authentication, and user-approval controls.
