To save an image as WebP, export or convert the original with a WebP-capable editor or command-line tool. Use Photoshop or GIMP for a visual workflow; use Google’s cwebp or ImageMagick for repeatable conversions and batches. Keep the original until you have checked the WebP’s appearance, transparency, dimensions, color profile, metadata, and compatibility with its destination.
What WebP export changes
WebP is an image format that supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency (alpha), animation, and metadata. Lossless encoding preserves the source image data but commonly creates a larger file. Lossy encoding can make a substantially smaller file, with a possible reduction in fine detail, text sharpness, or edge quality.
Google’s WebP FAQ reports an average of 30% more compression than JPEG without loss of image quality. That is a general published claim, not a guarantee for every photograph, illustration, screenshot, or export setting. Your result depends on the source, dimensions, image content, encoder, and quality setting.
Choose the right way to save WebP
| Method | Best for | Important controls |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop | Designers already working in Adobe’s workflow | Lossy or lossless encoding, quality, metadata |
| GIMP | A free graphical editor | Lossless mode, image and alpha quality, metadata retention |
cwebp |
Short, repeatable scripts and batches | Input/output paths and encoder options |
| ImageMagick | Pipelines that already use ImageMagick | Quality, lossless mode, alpha compression, method, target size and PSNR |
Save an image as WebP in Photoshop
Adobe documents native WebP support in Photoshop 23.2 and later. The documented workflow applies to 8-bit RGB Photoshop documents.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
- Open the image in Photoshop and finish your edits.
- Choose File > Save a Copy. Saving a copy keeps your working document in its original Photoshop format.
- In the Format menu, select WebP and choose a filename ending in
.webp. - Choose either lossless or lossy encoding in the WebP options dialog.
- For lossy output, adjust quality while watching important edges, text, gradients, and texture. Enable or disable metadata according to the destination’s requirements.
- Select OK, then open the resulting file in an image viewer or browser.
If WebP is not listed, check the Photoshop version and document mode. Convert an unsupported mode to 8-bit RGB only when that change is acceptable for your workflow; keep the original document so you can revise it later.
Photoshop settings that deserve a check
- Lossless: choose it when pixel-level fidelity matters or when the image contains crisp UI text, line art, or transparency that shows artifacts easily.
- Lossy quality: raise the value when blocking, ringing, banding, or softened text is visible at the image’s actual display size.
- Metadata: retain only what the destination needs. EXIF, copyright, and color information can increase file size or reveal information you did not intend to publish.
Save an image as WebP in GIMP
- Open the source image in GIMP.
- Choose File > Export As (or press
Ctrl+Shift+Eon Windows/Linux). - Enter a filename ending in
.webp, select the destination folder, and choose Export. - In the WebP export dialog, decide whether to check Lossless.
- For a lossy export, adjust image quality and alpha quality. Review the preview or reopen the exported file before replacing the original.
- Choose whether to retain EXIF, IPTC, XMP, the color profile, and thumbnail data, then select Export.
Use lossless mode when preserving the source is more important than minimizing bytes. With lossless unchecked, compare quality at the size visitors will actually see rather than judging only while zoomed in to 400%.
Convert to WebP with Google’s cwebp
Google’s prebuilt WebP utility archives are available for Windows, Linux, and macOS. The cwebp utility encodes JPEG, PNG, or TIFF input to WebP; dwebp decodes WebP back to PNG.
One-file conversion
cwebp input.jpg -o output.webp
PNG and TIFF inputs work the same way:
cwebp input.png -o output.webp
cwebp input.tif -o output.webp
Lossy quality and lossless examples
cwebp -q 80 input.jpg -o output.webp
cwebp -lossless input.png -o output.webp
Start with a moderate quality value, inspect the output, and adjust for the image rather than treating one number as universal. Keep source and destination names distinct so a failed command cannot overwrite the only copy.

Verify a WebP by decoding it
dwebp output.webp -o verification.png
Opening the decoded PNG can reveal problems with transparency, colors, or an export that did not complete as expected.
Batch conversion in a shell
On a POSIX shell, this loop converts JPEG files in the current directory to WebP files with matching base names:

for f in *.jpg; do
cwebp -q 80 "$f" -o "${f%.jpg}.webp"
done
Test the loop with a small folder first. Shell globbing, uppercase extensions, spaces, and an empty match can vary by shell; adapt the pattern before using it in a production job.
Convert to WebP with ImageMagick
ImageMagick can read and write WebP when its WebP delegate library is available. The basic command is:
magick input.jpg -quality 80 output.webp
ImageMagick lists a default quality of 75 and a default encoder method of 4. Set the options explicitly in scripts so an upgrade or environment change does not silently alter your output.
Common ImageMagick patterns
# Lossless output
magick input.png -define webp:lossless=true output.webp
# Resize before encoding
magick input.jpg -resize 1600x1600> -quality 82 output.webp
# Convert every PNG in a folder (POSIX shell)
for f in *.png; do
magick "$f" -quality 85 "${f%.png}.webp"
done
The WebP encoder exposes additional controls for quality, lossless mode, alpha compression, method, target size, target PSNR, and image-type hints. Use those controls only when you have a measurable requirement; extra flags make a pipeline harder to reproduce and troubleshoot.
Confirm WebP support in ImageMagick
magick -list format | grep -i webp
You should see a WebP format entry with read and/or write support. If it is absent or write support is disabled, install an ImageMagick build that includes the WebP delegate rather than debugging the command syntax.
Lossless or lossy: a practical decision
| Choose | When | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Archival copies, screenshots with tiny text, diagrams, flat-color artwork, or pixel-accurate assets | File size, transparency, and metadata |
| Lossy | Photographs and web images where smaller transfers matter | Text edges, gradients, skin tones, foliage, and repeated patterns |
Do not assume lossless always produces the smallest file. A photographic PNG may become dramatically smaller as a carefully tuned lossy WebP, while a simple graphic may compress efficiently in lossless mode. Compare the file size and visual result at the intended CSS or display dimensions.

Checks before replacing the original
- Open the file: verify that browsers, editors, and your publishing system can read it.
- Transparency: place the image over both light and dark backgrounds to detect an unwanted matte color or damaged alpha edges.
- Dimensions: confirm that no resize, orientation change, or animation-frame loss occurred.
- Color: check the embedded profile and the appearance in a color-managed viewer.
- Metadata: confirm that required copyright, camera, or location data remains—and that private metadata is removed when appropriate.
- Destination support: verify that the CMS, email system, app, or social platform accepts WebP and does not recompress it unexpectedly.
- Fallbacks: for broad compatibility, retain the original or generate a JPEG/PNG fallback until your target browsers and software are known to support WebP.

Troubleshooting WebP exports
“WebP” is missing from Photoshop
Native support is documented for Photoshop 23.2 and later. Update Photoshop, confirm the document is 8-bit RGB, and use File > Save a Copy. Keep the layered source if conversion to another document mode is required.

One-click scans. No signup required.
GIMP export looks soft or has halos
Raise image quality, test lossless mode, and inspect alpha quality separately. Thin transparent edges often reveal lossy artifacts before large opaque areas do.
cwebp or magick reports an unknown format
Confirm the executable is installed and on your PATH. For ImageMagick, check magick -list format for WebP read/write support. For Google’s tools, run cwebp -version and use the utility from the correct prebuilt archive for your operating system.
The output is larger than the JPEG or PNG
Try the other encoding mode, remove unnecessary metadata, resize to the required dimensions, and compare equivalent quality—not just equivalent command-line flags. Lossless WebP can be larger than a well-optimized source, especially for some photographs.

Transparency became a solid color
Check that the source actually has an alpha channel, that you selected a WebP mode preserving alpha, and that the viewing application supports transparent WebP. Test over contrasting backgrounds.

FAQ
Can I rename a JPG or PNG to .webp?
No. Renaming changes the filename, not the encoded data. Export or convert the image with a WebP-capable application.
Does WebP always have better quality than JPEG?
No. Quality depends on the encoder and settings. Compare outputs at the intended display size and choose the smallest file that meets your visual and metadata requirements.
Can WebP contain transparency?
Yes. WebP supports alpha, but the export must preserve it and the receiving software must support transparent WebP.
